Hello all. I'm new to all this but my son has just got a WIi U for Christmas which he loves. I grew up in the 80's and was a massive Nintendo fan and had one of the first Mrs deluxe sets. Had every other Nintendo since up to the N64. To show my son what games I used to play I have just purchased goldeneye for the normal Wii to play on his wii U. For some reason I can't get it to work. The software icon doesn't come up on the main home screen like the normal wii u games do. I have gone on the wii icon and paired a game pad but can't get it to play. With my sons console he had the main wii u game pad with lcd display and a normal gamepad. He doesn't have the numchuck remote or the other rectangle remote like on the original wii. Surely it's something simple but I cant work it out. Help needed to show my son a true classic game. Thanks.

To play wii games on the WiiU, you need to select the 'wii menu' from the 'wiiU menu' (Yeah, it is complicated...). You can also press and hold the B button on the gamepad when starting up the wiiu to go to the wii menu instantly.

When you are on the wii menu, you will probably see that icon for Goldeneye in the top left of the screen. To play it, you need to connect a Wii remote to the console. I believe you already know how that works? Also, you NEED a nunchuk or classic controller accessories to play the game. The game will probably tell you about that when you manage to start it up.

Thanks for your advice. The goldeneye icon doesn't appear where it should. Neither does the other wii James bond game I have tried to play. I can only assume it's because I don't have a classic control pad.

On the main home menu where the picture of the game normally comes up for you to select there's nothing. No goldeneye icon to click on and start the game.

Anyway I can send a photo on here. I could put the game in and show you what comes up / doesn't come up.

Just so you'll have a picture to go off of, it's one of these controllers that you'll need. The black controller is a Classic Controller Pro (it features handles and easier-to-reach shoulder buttons) while the white one is the original Classic Controller. Both plug into the bottom of your Wii Remote, assuming you own one.

Just don't get confused and buy one of these, which is a Wii U Pro Controller. It was designed for use with Wii U games, so obviously it won't work in your case.

I've just got the wii u pro and the big game pad with screen. Havnt got either of the other two. Issue is the game doesn't even come up on the home screen when it's insterted into the machine.

How do I post a photo. I could then show you the home screen.

Doesn't there appear a CD in that location? When you select it, it tells you it is a wii game. Then you can select to go to the wii menu from there. The WiiU needs to change to the 'old' wii mode to play old wii games.

By the way, on the Wii U Menu, are you opening what's highlighted on this picture first or are you trying to load GoldenEye 007 straight from the disc icon?

I've got the wii icon as you have shown above but with a disc in the background. I click on that and it goes through a set up process with a remote which I obviously can't do as I only have the pro and wii u lcd game pad. How do I paste a photo on here so I can show you.

Well, you're out of luck until you purchase a Wii Remote and a Classic Controller. (You can get them for cheap if you look hard enough, such as the used section at a GameStop assuming you live in the States) Sorry, Lewis.

Thanks for the info. I will get the control pads and see if I can set it up.

You may already know, but just fyi the Goldeneye wii game is not a straight port of the N64 game. It is a 're-imagining' made by a different developer that bears closer resemblance to a Call of Duty game (it's published by Activision) than the original. If you want a more faithful representation of the original game, you should check out the Half Life 2, 'Goldeneye Source Mod ' on PC which can be played on Steam.

Currently playing: Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Legend of Zelda: ALBW.

To make this perfectly clear: you need Wii controllers to play Wii games. That is true on both Wii and Wii U. GoldenEye is a Wii game, so you will need either a Wii Remote + Nunchuk or Wii Remote + Classic Controller Pro. I preferred using the Wiimote as a pointer, but dual analog is serviceable as well.

Once you have the right controllers, you will need to use a Wiimote to switch over to 'Wii Mode' where you can play Wii software. Simply click on the Wii Menu icon and then choose to either display on the TV or TV + Gamepad with a Wiimote. Don't forget the sensor bar.

Once you've done that, the game should play just fine.
