It seems this week that Ghost Recon Phantoms is currently paying Nintendo Life for wide add placement. I did some quick research and it turns out that this game was originally Ghost Recon Online and was slated for both PC and Wii U. The developers announced that the development teams were focusing on finishing the PC version and that they would continue the Wii U version of the game once it was released.
"focus will shift to the Wii U once the PC version is completed."
“Ghost Recon Online on the PC, we can test and learn with that and apply all the best benefits we learn onto the Wii U version to make sure that it’s a great Wii U game. That’s an unusual product for a console and we want to make sure we nail it. It really is because the PC team is a lot of the same guys that will work on the Wii U.”
It was later announced in 2012 that the Wii U version was on hold.
Since the PC version has just been released as a free to play game, (something Iwata is happy for developers to do on Nintendo platforms) I was wondering if anyone is still hoping we will hear more from this?
I'm not a fan of trigger happy carnage shooters but a free to play tactical cover based shooter? That sounds like something I'd really enjoy and I truly hope we will hear more from it! Although the Wii u doesn't have the most attractive of user bases at present I think I title like this could carve itself a niche on the Wii U where it might otherwise be overlooked on other systems.
My fingers are crossed for an e3 confirmation that the Wii U version has been resumed.
The Wiiu version was cancelled ages ago plus Ubisoft is clearly pulling back its support of the system.
Was it though? The official statement was that it was "on hold" so they could focus on the PC version. Whilst I appreciate that this could well mean that the project is over if taken literally it means that it wasn't in active development. I wouldn't assume that this means it was cancelled.
