Topic: Gameboy Advance SP does not recognize GBA games

Hello everyone.

I just recently got a GBA SP second hand. Before I bought it I had the seller show me it worked. He threw in some GBA game (don't know if it was SP or not) and it played just fine.

Upon arriving home and firing some Pokemon Sapphire up in my recently acquired toy, it wouldn't work. The Gameboy logo with the nintendo sign show up, and after that its just a white screen. Upon removing the game while the gameboy being stuck, some weird noise comes out of the gameboy repeatedly.

I made a video as well to give you some visuals of whats going on.

Anyone know what the problem might be and how to solve it?

Kind regards,

Razae

Just clean out the cartridges, dude. The contacts are dirty...a q-tip with a little rubbing alcohol on it should do the trick.

Did that, doesn't work.

Both Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire work in the other GBA system, so it can't be dirty cartridges. And Gameboy (Color) games DO work in the GBA SP.

My SP has a modded casing. (Maybe yours does too)
I've found this to work with gba games: (Pokemon Sapphire tested)
I don't place the cartridge in 100% and have a millimeter or two of it sticking out of the SP. I then gently wiggle the cartridge until it's properly detected.
However, I did this a while ago.

Try an Gameboy color game or Gameboy regular game to see if you get anything still. If nothing still I could assume issues with the game itself and not the Advance unit??? Otherwise the cart is not reading fully for some reason.

Yes I already came to this conclusion. In the video you can see me trying out Pokemon Red (GB) and I've also tried Pokemon Crystal (GBC). Both work fine. Because both Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire don't work on the SP but do work on the regular GBA, I think the problem has something to do with the switch inside the console which checks whether there is a GBA or GB(C) game in it. I've already ordered a new motherboard for it.

The GBA SP is just a redesign of the standard GBA. The case design you have is the tribal edition so it is one of Nintenodo's designs.
There's no reason that your GBA SP shouldn't be able to play any GB, GB color or GBA games unless there's a defect in the hardware or a bug in OS.
I would have suggested taking it back to the guy who sold it to you, but it's harder to get a refund on a private sale.

Yea there's definitely something wrong with the motherboard. I've already ordered another one so I can replace it. I've also found another AGS-101 GBA SP for just 25 euros. Has some scratches on it but i'll fix that with a replacement shell which I ordered. Going for a white and black color scheme, like the white ps4 controller.

I'll keep you guys updated when the new motherboard comes in!
