I'm a big fan of RPG elements. I love leveling up stats and getting better equipment and armor, but I'm not a fan of turn based combat. I find it unbearably boring in almost every game (very few exceptions). As such, one of my favourite genres is the Action RPG. I've recently started playing a bunch of them, and I'd like to know what everyone's favourites/recommendations are.
A game I started playing yesterday is called E.V.O. Search for Eden. It's a sidescrolling ARPG where you start out as a fish, and can evolve various aspects of your body (ie: better teeth for better attack, better body for better defense, better fins for better agility). Once you progress through each map you will evolve to the next stage of evolution. I've gone through amphibian, reptile, and now on mammal. It's a unique little game, if flawed. It's cool seeing what each choice does to your character, but the actual gameplay does leave something to be desired.

I am currently playing Secret of Mana on my SNES for the first time. I missed out on this one somehow originally. I really am enjoying it so far. The story is a little weak and the conversations between the characters are minimal but the gameplay, menu ring, classic colorful environments of the SNES, and wonderful music all come together like Voltron and create a gem that is so fondly remembered even today . I'm sure most people have already played it around here though.
I also have Secret of Evermore which I look forward to playing sometime down the road. The reviews make it sound slightly similar to Secret of Mana.
A Link to the Past is my 3rd favorite game of all time. That is one I can always go back to and will never grow tired of .
I have a difficult time differentiating between Action Adventure and Action RPG. In my eyes, A Link to the Past would be considered Action Adventure because there's really not much in the way of RPG elements, aside from hearts and equipment. I guess really I only qualify a game where you can improve various stats as an Action RPG. That's just me, though
Secret of Mana is a good game. The menu ring is definitely a brilliant design. I found the combat a bit annoying with how you have to charge up if you want to achieve anything, and it's also very tough (though perhaps I just need to grind more), but it is a very fun game, especially considering it's one of the very few multiplayer ARPGs.
Just finished beating E.V.O. .... sigh not very good. It's far too easy to be spammed with damage by an enemy simply walking into you, and the hit detection is very poor, causing you to bump into an enemy you were trying to hit more often than not. It also isn't very long, and there isn't really any big differences between the evolutions, save for fish and pterodactyls. And you really can't improve your stats all that much once you are able to afford the highest evolution parts. The game also has far too much of a focus on grinding. You can't possibly pass certain areas because the enemies are too strong, so you have to go kill some small things for an hour before you have enough to even buy the weakest upgrades.

OK, I agree with A Link to the Past being more Action Adventure than Action RPG. Either way I know it is one of the best games ever!
I don't mind the charge up to 100% to attack in Secret Of Mana, I didn't think it took to long . Also, once you find out what magic works on a boss, it is easy to spam magic the beasty with Popoi. I'm surprised they didn't apply some type of cool down timer for the ability to cast magic.
That sucks to hear about EVO. Oh well, the idea still seems pretty unique and it would be great to have in my collection. I just will not expect greatness.
To blessed to be stressed.
80's music makes me feel fabulous.
What Would Duane Do? Rynoggery
Longer than it should have, specifically when you have better weapons that charge to about 3 bars or so. I suppose in the long run it was meant to stop you from spamming, but then you get the magic thing, which I dislike using because it cheapens the experience and makes bosses more of a chore than a challenge.
Yeah, it'd be a decent game to have.

Definitely the charge meter was meant to stop you from mashing the attack button. You can raise a weapon one level for each weapon orb of the same weapon type forged, and you can raise magic one level for each Mana Seed recovered (and to try to keep you from spamming magic near a recovery point, you only get half the magic experience each time it is cast in a "safe" area). But if you want a challenge, try to avoid building magic levels as magic tends to get really powerful.
