All we know so far is allegedly it's AMD, with an open source OS and can play Retro games. And maybe new games.

Where those new games will come from, and how they plan to get developers on board or pay them to do so, when they have to crowdfund the entire system is a big issue. Plus, said crowdfunding is delayed.

Basically we have a system built on the promise of games that the company behind this can't afford to do first party, as evidenced by crowdfunding the device, nor can they pay other developers of note, nor will those other developers of note take ANY shots on a crowdfunded device regardless of how capable it is because doing so just screams throwing away money on making a game, and the games it WILL play are all Atari retro games, so 2600/5200/Lynx/Jaguar.

Yep. Specs mean jack all for this thing. It could surpass the Xbox One X, it's still going to have a nightmare of a time getting current games, have a very hackable OS from the sounds of it, and again, the company needs to crowdfund it!

It'll be a pretty safe bet that it won't even come close to the Xbox One X because the best off-the-shelf APU that AMD produce right now has barely a quarter of its graphical processing power, and you could bet your bottom dollar that Atari wouldn't be engaging them to make a custom unit for something that in all probability won't be selling in the millions.

In all honesty, I'd expect the Atari Box will probably be using one of the low to mid-range APUs aimed at the laptop and set-top box markets, going by the size of the thing, giving it capabilities more on a par with the Switch, except that you won't be able to undock it and take it with you.

Still, if it runs Linux it ought to run Steam, and all the other usual on-line marketplaces, so that'll be where you get your games from.

@Matt_Barber literally nobody thinks this thing is going to have anything close to the power of xbox1x.. like... lol?
Nor is anyone going to pay $300+ for an atari.

@Intertiacreep I never said it would. Indeed, I was suggesting the opposite, that the likely specs will be much lower, given the off-the-shelf options available. To get more specific, the best case scenario would be that it has one of the forthcoming Raven Ridge APUs with the Ryzen cores, but I'd think it far more likely that they'd go with a bottom rung Bristol Ridge like the A8-9600B, because it won't really need anything better just to emulate old Atari games under Linux.

And yes, I think it's doomed at that price too. It''s far too expensive to be a nostalgic throwaway purchase and will not sell at all to the mass market.

There's a part of me that still thinks it could be rather cool to get one and reconfigure it as an HD streaming box with a bunch of media players, indie games and emulators installed However, when I've already got a self-built HTPC that does all that, and in all likelihood far better, I'd still be struggling to justify it.

@Matt_Barber i know you said it's unlikely, but you brought up this assertion like it had any plausibility at all.
Like someone discussing the new prius saying "i think it's a pretty safe bet it won't come close to the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Nuremburg lap times"

I got a pre-buy notice in my email last week. Seriously this whole thing is scary. They havent even divulged the specs yet and are starting pre-orders? Im starting to think the whole thing is a hoax or they are really trying to sucker people into buying the worst of the worst. All I can say is buyer beware at this point. I was hoping for a decent Atari comeback. They dont have to beat to the current systems. Just do something neat and have a good showing. But this way of business is crazy.

Still playing 3DS but will have Switch soon for multiplayer with friends. I miss you guys! Adam, Joni, Gavin and the rest of the Blue Rogues from the Phantasy Star Zero Days.

That is a pretty safe bet though.

Maybe you just didn't pick up on the level of understatement I intended?
