Ninty. The Big N. The House of Mario. The Japanese Giant. The Kyoto Based Game Company. The Funky Kong Fun Factory.
Sometimes you want to talk about the company Nintendo, but for some mysterious reason can’t simply use the word ‘Nintendo’.
In those cases, you need to reach into the big bag of corporate nicknames and pick a fresh and spicy alternative.
Maybe your favourite is listed at the top (I see some ‘Big N’ fans out there). Maybe your preferred choice is less well known but not unheard of. Maybe you just made it up on the spot.
In any case, pray tell: what is your favourite name for The House that Hanafuda Begat?
"The Big N" followed by "Ninty" are the only ones that feel right, even though I really don't use nicknames.
I feel "Japanese Giant" is used just as much if not moreso for Playstation (at least, Push Square loves to use it in their articles) so it doesn't immediately feel very Nintendo, & "Kyoto Based Game Company" is just factually something they are and not something I've ever thought of (or heard used) as a nickname (too mouthy as well).
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
I propose that we retire such terms as The Big N and Ninty and replace them with fresh new alternatives.
Why say The Big N when you can say The Chunky Dough]/em]? Why use [em]Ninty when Tendy is clearly the the superior option? The House of Mario is all well and good, but if we’re going to explicitly reference a platforming plumber’s residence, we should really opt for Luigi’s Mansion.
I look forward to these terms entering standard journalistic parlance.
I've always referred to them as "that Kyoto (no I've not misspelled Tokyo!) based company which has interests in multiple sectors like playing cards, love hotels and occasionally video gaming goods" which is far more accurate than "The Big N" or "The House Of Mario".
@jump Far snappier than The Big N. A great improvement.
One of my other favourites is The Company Formerly Known as Nintendo Co., Ltd. (and Also Currently Known as Nintendo Co., Ltd. (and Likely to Be Known as Nintendo Co., Ltd. for the Foreseeable Future)).
It really helps out when I’m searching for an alternative word for Nintendo to keep my writing pithy and fresh.
