@JamesGoblin: Yeah, it can either be a warm and charming little JRPG-like with lots of call backs to older games or a nihilistic horror story. In neither case would I use the word childish to describe it.

So there's a didyouknowgaming video about Undertale.

Gotta give kudos for Toby for using the same chip that was used for the Genesis for composing some songs!

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

@Ralizah Indeed, and I don't remember ever being "tricked" by game's appearance this much.

Not in the head!

So here's a bunch of piano renditions of all of the game's boss themes:
Pacifist:

Neutral:
Genocide:
Hidden:
Whoever did these, I applaud him/her for his/her fantastic work.

...So, any news yet about this showing up on the Wii U?
Was considering getting it at this point, but feel like I should wait.

I haven't heard anything about it coming out on the Wii U but it's such a great game, I don't think you should wait to get it.

No one here?
Ah well. Guess I'll just talk about something I honestly don't get.
Why does the internet love W.D. Gaster so much as a character? We only know that he was the royal scientist before Alphys, and that he died by falling into "his creation" aka the CORE. That's it. And yet everyone draws fan-art of his possible appearance, remixes the theme that might be his, cosplays as him and makes fan boss battles of him.

To be fair, you would have to be a dreadfully bad entertainer to not get comedy out of Undertale.

One of the only two games I managed to beat while I was gone. I'm still pretty terrible at actually finishing games. Like, I got to the final dungeon of Breath of Fire II back in January, and then I decided it was the perfect time to put the game down for an extended period of time in order to play a freeware Hentai RPG. That was the other game I finished, btw. And no, I'm not talking about Breath of Fire II.

That said, I just remembered I stopped partway through the true pasifist route, guess I'll finish that up tonight.

@CanisWolfred I'm also bad about dropping a game when I'm 90% of the way through

Ok started playing, and found out about the borders option. So played it a while with a border on. Wife came home from work so turned it off. Went to my Wii U to use Netflix, WOW Screen burn from the border was mental. Anyone else found this?

Not that I'm playing Undertale on the Switch. Just want to stop by and say that Flowey is one of the best gaming villians of all time.

I just played it on Switch, though I had it on Steam and never touched it.
I liked it a lot and hope there will be a sequel or prequel or a similar game with a totally different story.
I get how people find this overhyped though. It is rather short and though the battle system to me was more interesting and fun, I still like Earthbound better.
Maybe that also is due to the short playtime and the fact that with each playthrough you don't get the whole picture of the characters you interact with.
The music and characters were rather great though.
And it managed to capture the humor, crazyness, sensitive writing and overall style of Earthbound while actually being a totally different game.

I played a semi-pacifist run by the way. I didn't kill anyone except the bosses, spared the king, but didn't spare Flowey. That ***** ! ;-]
The result was a world run by Mettaton. Well, not sure that was what I wanted.

Waiting for my physical copy to show up, but always glad to see new people getting to experience Undertale. It's crazy because everyone always seems to have a different experience. I mean, the game quite literally ended up significantly changing my life, but I'm obviously in the (really really) minority there.

@Tiefseemiez I'd recommend you do a pacifist run at some point by the way. It's basically considered the true ending, and does contain a good deal of content that's not in a normal run. Though, you were this close to getting the joke good ending with the run you had, if only you'd killed Mettaton too.

Yeah this is one of those games everyone should play. Arguably this is even a better sequel to Earthbound than Mother 3 was. If not in terms of quality than certainly in terms of how it plays out from beginning to end.

For the record, especially in hindsight, I don't love Undertale as much as Mother 3. My original neutral run IS one of my favorite gaming playthroughs this entire decade, but I do prefer Mother 3 as a whole. It's just that it does some things that make it closer to Earthbound than Mother 3 was. But that's partially because I liked Mother 3 more than Earthbound precisely because of certain differences to Earthbound.

That being said, Undertale is probably the closest we'll ever get to Mother 4 (barring maybe the game that used to be called...Mother 4).

I'm having such a weird experience with Undertale (first time playing.) I can't actually say if I like it or not. The writing and characters are so interesting, and the unpredictability is refreshing but also makes me uncertain as to what I'm actually doing most of the time and feels more or less like an acid trip more times than not. The graphics of course are intentional, but tend to make the game uninviting particularly when I feel like I have no idea what's going on most of the time.

I find it very interesting, and I'm always nervous and curious what weird thing happens next. But at the same time I don't love it.

If it weren't for the combat system I might have been more definitive. The mini-games of doging attacks are kind of boring and annoying at the same time. And the random-ness of Act/Attack and knowing what anything really is is like a kind of broken version of SMT. Worse I get the feeling it's intentionally broken, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

It's generally a game that leaves me in a state of discontented confusion, and yet I get curious and want to keep slogging through it even if I'm dreading every single battle screen.

Wow, took me only four years to finally buy this game.

I bought the Switch version in June 2019 (for my birthday) when it was on sale, but had loads to play with Super Mario Maker 2, Dragon Quest Builders 2, Hollow Knight, Celeste, etc.

But I started to get into it properly a week ago (Sans in Smash really gave me the push I needed) because well, the first 2 hours I played of this game didn't seem like anything special. But man, I was deceived by the graphics and simple puzzles and couldn't see the greater picture. But that all changed in the following 23 hours I spend on the game.

I'm on my 4th playthrough now, done Neutral, True Pacifist, and then an untrue Genocide (was only a Bosskiller run) and now I'm on a True Genocide route, blocked by Undyne.

And, man, I love this game. I should have bought the physical version, doesn't matter if it's 3 times or 10 times as expensive. It's probably sold out everywhere. I'm way too late to the party.

It might sound weird to compare it to my other RPG of the decade, Xenoblade Chronicles X, but UNDERTALE is pretty much the only other contestant to win my RPG of the decade award. If beating the game, especially True Pacifist, isn't mindblowing enough, just wait how much else there's hidden. I feel like UNDERTALE filled a hole, or several holes in my gamer heart.

And here it goes, UNDERTALE, the second RPG since the beginning of 2011 that I put next to my all-time favourites EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, and Terranigma, (and Xenoblade Chronicles X).

Oh, yeah, obligatory tldr rating. UNDERTALE: 10/10.

Also, Admins! Can we move this over to the Switch forum?
