I've watched this trailer a hundred times. My copy is already on its way from Play-Asia. I even sold my Deathsmiles PCB kit last week so now I don't have to rotate my Egret 2 cabinet's monitor anymore. I can't wait for Deathsmiles to come in so I can fire up the Xbox 360. I haven't played it in weeks.
They also announced that Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 is coming to Xbox 360 in Japan as well as Ketsui. Yay! Maybe that will save me the $1000 of buying the PCB kits.
It's one of my favorite shooters. Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder are still my two favorite shooters of all time, but following Muchi Muchi Pork (which is currently in my Egret 2 cabinet), Deathsmiles gets the nod. It's an amazing shooter, and very accessible to even those who aren't quite as seasoned in the manic shooter subgenre.
According to the tracking number Play-Asia sent me, my copy of Xbox 360 Deathsmiles is supposed to be here tomorrow. I can't wait to pop it in the 360 and go at it, especially now that I know the Mega Black Label version is downloadable already.
I owned the Deathsmiles PCB for my cabinet for almost a year and it's a great game, but it's nowhere nearly as manic as say a Mushihimesama or Pink Sweets. Deathsmiles is more about knowing where to be and which direction enemies and bullets are coming from, especially later on in the game. Deathsmiles, at least IMO, is the easiest Cave title to 1cc. Muchi Muchi Pork isn't much harder and is a nice diversion from Mushihimesama Futari and Pink Sweets that throw everything including the kitchen sink at you.
I'll say this, Deathsmiles is one of the most enjoyable shooters I've played in years and I can't wait to get my hands on this Xbox port as people I've talked to today that already have it, say it's amazing! I'll post my impressions in this topic tomorrow night after I've had a chance to play it for a bit.
@Corbie: First, a port! The graphics look really good, you sure its not updated? Second, don't you have to like work at another job or something (being a mod doesn't pay the bills ), are you going to suddenly catch the flu and take tomorrow off
It is an enhanced port of the arcade game. I used the term "port" mainly to signify that it was not just the arcade code being emulated on the Xbox 360 hardware. I tend to use that term even though it's not "politically correct". And of course I have to work, I meant I'd play the game when I got home and then post some impressions tomorrow night. I get off at 4pm, so I should have plenty of time to get in a few hours before I write the impressions on it. I'm pretty familiar with the game already, I just want to see what differences there are with the visuals, audio, and game play.
@ Corbie Since you are the expert on SHMUPs, I have a question for you: In Blazing Lazers for the Virtual Console, does the God of Game difficulty code work? I read about it but wasn't sure if this only works on the TurboGrafx 16. I want to download this game because I keep hearing good things about it but I also hear that its too easy. I just want to up the difficulty for a good challenge! Also, would you still recommend Gate of Thunder even though the sound effects drown out the music? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I own Gunhed (Blazing Lazers) for my PC Engine so I don't have it on the VC. I'm not sure about those codes as they are executed by using the various Turbo settings on the TG16 controller. And since you don't have access to that controller, I'm not sure if the code will work. But, since that particular God of the Game code uses the lowest turbo setting, perhaps the Wii controllers might work after all. As for Gate of Thunder, it's what I consider the greatest shmup ever made, so despite the loud sound effects, it's worth every penny.
I'll post some about Deathsmiles Xbox 360 tomorrow. I didn't get to put in much time with it tonight. So far it's absolutely amazing!
Hey Corbie! I downloaded Gate of Thunder today and you are so right about it being an awesome game! I already got Lords of Thunder a while back so I guess I'll be in shooter heaven for a while at least!
