Topic: Sony E3 Press Conference: Impressions and Ratings?

So this is it! The final conference from the Big 3... Will Sony overachieve and take top honors this year, or does Nintendo have it in the bag after a solid (if unspectacular) outing?

Well, what else would Sony start with except a montage of game trailers? The usual suspects appear with Killzone 3 being the biggest feature attraction... but given how mediocre Killzone 2 was I'm hardly chomping at the bit for another (very pretty) sequel. LittleBigPlanet 2 also gets some facetime, but represents another game that suffered from having more emphasis on appearance and level editing tools than on actual gameplay. Color me not impressed.

It's worth noting that Sony is pushing the 3D and graphical aspects of gaming heavily. I know some people are sold on this as part of the future, but I'm resistant to expensive changes when there is no real justification for them. So far Sony is failing on that part of the sales pitch... speaking of which, why do I feel like they are trying to convince me to buy a new TV at this press conference instead of selling video games?

But things do improve! Sly Cooper Collection? Backwards compatibility would be better, but this is still pretty sweet. Add in the Heroes on the Move all-star game with a handful of Sony's best mascots, an excellent Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 showing, Not all of their gaming announcements are hits... but the Move showing is considerably less casual than Microsoft had with Kinect, and is better for it. Seeing Gabe Newell on stage is a big deal given his critical comments about the PS3 earlier. Portal 2 (Valve) and Dead Space 2 (EA) both looked amazing -- but will be just as amazing on 360. Twisted Metal being announced is incredible, but a 2011 release date seems like a long way off for this title.

Sadly, the rest of Sony's announcements are less interesting. Claims that PSP still has life makes me guess they didn't see the Nintendo 3DS presentation or recent sales figures. More focus on LittleBigPlanet 2 shows that the game is even more dedicated to content creation than the first (which will thrill a small group of people and leave everyone else with even less "game" out of the box). And they actually bring up Home... snicker Probably the worst part of all, Sony tried to sell the PSN subscription package as value proposition for consumers because it includes some free minis and Qore. Well, they've gotta convince the Sony faithful that it's worth paying for somehow.

So what is my impression of Sony's conference?

Well this little summary left out a lot of stuff... but that's largely because I was either disappointed or completely unaffected by that content. Sony did a good job of showcasing Move in a positive light (much better than Microsoft's Kinect) but seemed to pad the good announcements with fluff. Overall I was disappointed with the lengthy show: Sony usually rocks E3 but this time felt like a lot of noise with very little content.

Final grade: B... despite thinking that Kevin Butler is hilarious. Might stretch to a B+ if you care about LittleBigPlanet 2.

Oh yeah, and no showing of The Last Guardian bites. Maybe it'll be on the floor?

B for LBP2 and Twisted Metal Otherwise, lame.

It was okay. Kevin Butler was funny, and Sly Cooper Collection really got my attention. But PSEye + 2 PSMoves + 2 PSNunchucky-thingies, which is what I'll need to play RE5 local co-op with motion controlls, = a lot of money. Not happy about that, though I didn't expect it to be cheap.

Oh yes, the lack of The Last Guardian deeply disappoints me.

I also think they were weak this year. Neither Move nor Kinetic had a good show, and yet most were expecting something special regarding them. Lame.

Twisted Metal and Portal 2 were the only surprises out of this very boring E3 press conference. Where the heck is The Last Guardian? Not as bad as Microsoft but still pretty lame. Nintendo easily wins E3.

Im watching it right now, and I must say that Sorcery looked amazing and Move is looking extremely accurate and worth the money.

@slapshot: Yeah, I totally forgot about Sorcery. It actually does look really good. Most of the games that Sony displayed were either multiplatform titles or stuff that was previously announced. Not very many surprises. For me it just paled in comparison to Nintendo's conference which I just watched a little earlier.

I sadly did not get to watch, but I had two commentators informing me live, haha, and I must say it sounded disappointing. I was expecting much better. The entire conference could have been a Last Guardian trailer, and I'd have been happy. The PS2 download rumor didn't show its face either, from what I've told. Oh well.

Portal 2 was a whopper, but... what the heck? I mean, seriously, Valve? I thought the PS3 was the worst console in the history of terrible consoles, what's with the change of heart? What a jerkface. I'll likely rent it if it's retail. I loved the original.

It was definitely better then Microsoft's... But that's all I can say.

I don't know why I watched this when I have no interest in Sony, but I'd have to say that I enjoyed the part where Sweettooth rolled out onto stage in his icecream truck. I used to play quite a bit of Twisted Metal with my buddies, back in the day. Car combats bore me nowadays, though. Other than seeing Sweettooth, I pretty much tuned out the rest of the conference.

Overall I was impressed with what I saw. Lots of exclusive content for PS3 on multiplatform gamers (3rd Party). Valve is now dev for PS3, Twisted Metal created by David Jaffe = Epic Awesomeness!

Playstation Home recreated to E3 booth is Awesome!

Rhansley64

For me it was worse then Microsoft since at least Microsoft Non-Gaming Features look amazing as well as having exclusive DLC for there games and actually have games that look casual for there upcoming casual market, however Sony on the other can't seem to understand the definition of casual i mean looking at there games like motion fighter looks like the main character from GTA in a Wii mix Brown world it's looks disgusting and unappealing.

@Rhansley64: You mean the DLC that 360 gets first. It's not all exclusive DLC, they just get it first. Yay.

I can't find the Press Conference anywhere. All the websites just have links to view it live, which doesn't help. But from what I gathered is just Sony's answer to Wii-Motes and their alternative to Xbox Live. No contest this year.

I thought Sony's presentation was subtle, but effective enough in that it made it very clear what direction the vendor will be focusing on in the future: digital distribution.

I'm a fan of that, so I was quite a fan of the presentation. I don't believe it was as exciting as Nintendo's presentation, but it was a very good one to think about - I put my my thoughts in more depth on my blog: http://gamesandbiz.blogspot.com/2010/06/sony-hedging-its-bets...

I will say this though - I didn't care much for the retail games announced, on a whole, and I'm not 100% sold on Move. I wonder if the next 12 months of Sony gaming for me will be primarially download based - whether I subscribe to PlayStation Plus or not (although I probably will).
