This is somewhat old news, a simple google search would show quite a few sites reporting this.

I'm not sure if this kills a chance for Shenmue 3 or not, though. It didn't feel like it was ever going to happen anyway. It's not like they couldn't make something similar with a different name and call it a Shenmue spiritual successor.

I thought SEGA already gave a postmortem to Shenmue a while back. I've always wanted to play it, even though all footage I've seen of it makes me think I wouldn't like it (all those quick time events and that voice acting...)

As much as I love Shenmue, and as big a cult hit it is on forums, Shenmue lost a lot of money for Sega. It just doesn't sell. The only way we'll ever see Shenmue 3 is through crowd funding.

It's doubly sad as the spiritual successor series Yakuza is now going the same way.

It just means anyone in the US can market a product (any product) by the name of Shenmue - be it Sega, Nintendo or Procter & Gamble - it doens't mean Sega lost its property on the franchise or that they can't renew the licence in the future. It's not a big deal.

Better be planning to actually make a game called Shenmue while you legally can or Sega will probably sue the rights out of you.
I remember that is how EA took down a trademark troll called Tim Langdale (who claimed he owned the rights to the word "edge") in like 2008. When EA did stuff besides evil.
