How cool would it have been to play this game on Wii U?
I know, I know, that's a strange comment. But I recall how well the gamepad worked in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Having the map right there at all times was terrific, and that would be exponentially more true with the maps in World.
Any time you want, from anywhere, just glance at the gamepad to see where you're at. In the middle of combat? No problem. You can run to the side by holding the analog and R to dodge an attack while still glancing at the map. Could instantly toggle on your bug net or mantle, or signal players. Could do all your crafting on the gamepad, see the player list in an online session, etc.
I don't think it would be better than having on Switch to take anywhere, BUT, I do think it would be a really cool experience. I suppose we always have MH3U in the classics vault if ever anyone gets the itch for some dual screen MH that's not held hostage to CRTV resolution and inadequate button set. MH3U was one of those rare gems that really took advantage of the hardware. There was a time I couldn't even envision playing MH on a single screen.
@DarthNocturnal
Ya I suppose... I never really liked companion apps though. Gamepad was super comfy though. Just didn't like that low res screen, though for maps and auxiliary functions it was fine.
@OutCold
Yes. Have to increase monster research level

Yup, I know. Have to have auto crafting turned on for it though, and there's only 4 items I use that on.
I never thought the map was inadequate, I was just saying it would be cool to play with the gamepad. Just a "this would be cool" thing not a "the map is inadequate and wish I had this instead" thing.

Monster Hunter is often too intense and complicated for me to split my mind between even the item bar and combat / traversal. I think a second screen any further apart than a system like DS — at that point, essentially just a taller single screen — wouldn't really work.
Oh, and to keep up with my pattern of little niggles, they probably shouldn't have kept the shinies white on maps like the Coral Highlands and Elder's Recess that have white sand and — funnily enough — other sparkling crystals as ground texture / clutter.
MH3U definitely wasn't as smooth an experience as the 3DS entries as far as second screens are concerned, but it was certainly faster to glance at the gamepad to check the map while running then it would've been to pause the game. It's a small thing but it's just one of those quality of life additions that you really come to appreciate.
I wouldn't want to use it for an item bar though. That is something I need on the screen.
I just got the Nergal Lacerator charge blade. Ya. 774 Attack, 120 Dragon, High Elderseal, quarter bar of blue sharpness (it's actually maxed out, can't go any higher so my Handicraft +1 is now rendered useless, but that's OK because I'm about to replace that piece anyways), and a slot. No defense bonus, whereas my Blast LongSword had +20 defense, but I needed the blue sharpness and high damage, and I definitely needed the high elderseal.
edit
One Legi armor piece away from completing the mix set.
Currently have 359 defense (thanks to Defense Lv 4), Earplugs Lv 4, Evade Extend Lv 2 and Evade Window Lv 2. Soon as I get this last piece it'll be Evasion Lv 3. Could opt for 1 less evasion point by swapping for my Defense Lv 3 charm (meaning Defense Lv 7 total), but I want that evasion. Will Also complete next weekly bounty for another Legi gem and upgrade the evasion charm, to total Evasion Lv 4. Also gemmed in Divine Protection, Recussitate, and Thunder Res so I don't have any negative resistances.
Now, if only there were a way to find good decorations, like Evasion and Earplugs. I have to be missing something, because right now decorations are way too freaking hard to get, and they almost always suck. I never find them when I mine ore (am I supposed to?). Only get one per quest in reward box, and usually it's a quadruplicate of Airborn or Defense Down or some other relatively situational or niche skill.
That's pretty much the default response of everyone the first time they get into Monster Hunter. The only people that don't say that are the ones that give up before they get into it.

I almost defeated the mystery monster that's probably the last monster in high rank, but made some sloppy mistakes since I was running low on time. I then took on Betelguise for the first time to try to get parts for the Powertalon and Armortalon, and I was so close to defeating it, but then it fled since it was an investigation. At least I got the needed Betelguise parts from shiny drops.
Now I just have to upgrade my hunting horn and craft some strength and armor potions, then I'll take on the mysterious possibly final monster again.
Somehow my alpha-Barroth armour is still holding up. Some monsters are hard to beat with it, but I think I can keep using it for a little while yet before needing to get a new armour set.
@JaxonH
Yep. I bought both 3DS games and the Wii U game, but never got more than an hour or so into any of them. World is the first MH game I've actually played. Mind = blown.
Screw the nonsense. I'm done dealing with Kushala's shenanigans. Made a full Windproof 5 set, still has Evasion 4 and some Earplugs... good enough for the girls we date.
@SuperWeird
That's pretty common. When I first tried MH3U I set it aside after an hour or so. Fortunately had a coworker who literally bought a Wii U just to play that game, and he got me into it. But if it hadn't been for him, I would have never realized how great a game it is.

So, I've joined the mh world crew. My ps4 is set up, I'm all about rocking rank 5 now (lol) and getting to grips with the more seamless online mechanics and surroundings.
I love this game. This one is a real gem, it has the detail, fun, depth and all of that.
Is there a ps4 community based on Nintendolifers or something? It's kind of weird to play with almost exclusively anonymous people; I'm used to joking around with each other.
Mind boggling, actually, being able to create such a well balanced game with so much depth and life, while keeping the most user unfriendly communications and connections system in modern history.
Ya the game is great. A true masterpiece. And I don't say that lightly (although I wouldn't blame you if you thought I did, because I have praised many games as being masterpieces these past 12 months... but for good reason- there's been a heck of a lot of timeless classics releasing lately).
MH has always been my favorite game series of all time, next to Fire Emblem and Xenoblade, of course. But it's also always had potential to be even better if they just put a decent budget behind it and modernized some of the features, which they finally did. I was nervous as heck though because so many casual non-fans want to ruin the game with health bars and open world and nonsense of the sort, so I'm really glad Capcom did not go down that route, especially since they've botched countless other IP in their pursuit of ever larger mass appeal.
I just wish more games would be given the respect, budget and promotion they deserve. If Fire Emblem got a budget like MH World, with solid, modern graphics and a much better story with high quality cinematics... it would reach similar heights. The game is just that good. But they continue to under service the IP with limited budgets, limited resources, limited promotion. Same for Xenoblade. I actually think Nintendo could learn a thing or two from this new Capcom we're seeing.

Just ganked 2 Daora gems and a Goose gem... must be my lucky day. Fully upgraded Evasion charm, and now I'm rockin Evasion 5 and Earplugs 5... the 2 skills which are absolutely non-negotiable imo. Rest is buffed up defense and elemental resistances (and Critical Draw 2, which I wasn't going for but was a package deal... I'm not complaining, I'll take it). Had to dip down to -1 in Ice but... eh. Who cares. I can live with that. Especially with +11 Thunder (you hear that Kirin? I'm comin for ya)
Tempered Kirin could still do 75% of a full health bar with a thunder attack while I had equipped and eaten for 45 thunder res and put on the thunderproof mantle. Elemental resistance is really underpowered in Monster Hunter, lmao.
Dalamadur summons blue meteors.
There is a Dalamadur Skeleton laying in the Rotten Vale.
Monster Hunter: World's story is about the elder migration and the main theme is titled "Driven by the Stars."

Wth...
That's outrageous. In the truest sense of the word.
