Fallout New Vegas is going to be plenty different from Fallout 3.
1. There is no black and white karma system. You are no longer "good" or "evil." New Vegas is built around helping a handful of different Vegas factions who are all in opposition. While some factions are markedly "more good" than others, all factions will ask you to do some shady stuff.
2. The main story has much more flexibility regarding how and when you can end it. As a result, all but 1 of New Vegas's 2200 characters can be killed. But no kids. Killing kids is bad.
3. You're character's past is ambiguous. At the beginning of the game you will be able to select from a variety of character types with built in backstories, or you can fully customize. Awesome.

Just look up some interviews with Jason Bergman. He has disclosed a ridiculous amount of awesome info about the game.

and now, the fun part:

What karma was your character in Fallout 3 and what karma do you plan on being with in New Vegas?

My character was a delusional do-gooder, with his own homemade moral set, a la Travis Bickle of Taxi Driver.
His Karma was usually good, but he would indiscriminately slaughter all the residents of Tenpenny Tower just for being bigots, stuff like that. Most of the time, I was neutral.

What was the first thing you guys did when you left Vault 101?

I strolled through Megaton and shot Mr. Burke in the face for daring to mention his sick and twisted plan to destroy Megaton. Not on my watch.

Who is your favorite companion?

What was the dog's name? Dogmeat? Definitely him.

I didn't destroy Megaton either and I told the sheriff dude who owns the town and he went up and killed him.
I also went to Tenpenny Tower and let the ghouls in and all hell broke loose. It was so fun killing those snobs.

Another thing I am excited about in New Vegas is that the companions and the commands you tell them to do are more depth than they are in Fallout 3.
I loved strolling the wastelands with a companion and exploring places like vaults.

Which reminds me,do you guys hope that the vaults return in New Vegas?
I mean of course there will be vaults but in the sense of Fallout 3 where you can come across random vaults and explore them?

Karma in Fallout 3 was definitely good. I did a few evil things here and there for the sake of better armor. For instance, I killed that Crowley ghoul for the Super Mega Awesome Armor of Awesomeness (TM), but since he not only wanted me to collect the keys for him to get it, but to murder those who held the keys, and all I did was pickpocket them or otherwise charm them off the characters, I still think I came out ahead in terms of karma.

In New Vegas I'm sure I'll be a good character as well. The thing is, I end up feeling sorry for those wasteland folks. I really do. Life is obviously so hard for them, that I can't really bring myself to bring them to harm most of the time. It sounds kind of silly, but I wouldn't have fun gunning down such hopeless cases. It's too sad to be any fun. I remember I was exploring one of the vaults full of insane survivors...attacking me with pipes and switchblades when I was a walking tower of armored death. I felt bad having to kill them, even though they were attacking me. They didn't deserve it...they were just defending their little safe haven in a world that would have eaten them alive.

The first thing I did when I left Vault 101 was encounter a wandering merchant, actually. I forget his name, but he's the young one, who kind of talks like a transplant from Oblivion. It was just a random encounter, but I talked to him, got some background on what happened and what life was like...it was already pretty depressing. You'd think I would have felt less lonely running into another human so soon after the vault, but all it really did was reinforce how different the world was from what my character was used to. After that I wandered around Springvale or whatever that little town is, scrounging for bottlecaps and being shot by raiders who were sniping me from the school when I got too close. Not the most action packed beginning of a game I've ever experienced, but it was definitely unsettling.

I didn't really like the companions. I found it difficult to control them and keep them alive, aside from Fawkes, who it's probably harder to kill than to keep alive. But I did like Charon the best, I think. He was a good guy. I bought him his freedom, and just let him chill around my Megaton house, listening to my jukebox and drinking Nuka Cola. I never took him out because I didn't want him getting killed, but I eventually did pull him out of retirement to help me clean out Paradise Falls of slavers.

...and he got killed, so I reloaded, did it alone, and left him home jazzing out to Butcher Pete.

How do you get Charon?
Is that the Ghoul in the underworld? (haven't played Fallout 3 in a while.)
I think he kept telling me to speak with that other dude and kept telling me to go away.

You get Charon by buying him off of the baaaaaad ghoul, then Charon blows his face off.

I was a delusional do-gooder too, I never even stole anything. The only thing that could "count" as evil is accidentally killing Star Paladin Cross when I started Operation Anchorage. :C

Dogmeat is the best, he found me a sniper rifle once.

Also, the Gauss Rifle is crazy awesome, and Operation Anchorage is worth it just for that.

@Blink: Actually, the best things to come out of Operation Anchorage were the non-degrading Winterized T-51b Power Armor and the Chinese Stealth Armor. The DLC that I enjoyed the most was The Pitt, though, for it's awesome story, atmosphere and most of all it's weapons. The Metal Blaster is hands down the coolest weapon in the game, in my opinion, I mean, it's a laser shotgun! Also, the Perforator was perfect for anyone with 100 stealth and a suit of Chinese Stealth Armor; you could clear out a whole spaceship full of aliens without being exposed or suffering any damage (that's actually how I passed Mothership Zeta)...

I actually just started playing Fallout 3 a day or so ago. A few pretty awesome moments so far. I was attacked by a Centaur and some random dude ran up to it and started attacking it. The centaur killed him. Then a moment later the dude's body blew up and killed the Centaur. Just today I traveled back to Vault 101 and went on the other side of it (instead of just going forwards towards Megaton). I came across some raiders then I saw this little farm and went there. As I approached, something fell from the building and landed beside it. I then went stealthy and it was a hunting rifle. So I figured someone must have been there, then I spotted the Deathclaw. My first one. It's legs were crippled and he was half dead, so I killed it with my .32 (the gun sucked, so I decided I might as well use up the ammo). The last shot, using VATS, to the head. It showed the bullet going through the air kind of matrix style. The Deathclaw flew about 30 ft. It was awesome to see, but also hilarious to watch lol

Currently getting some dish for Galaxy Radio. I want to hit a few more levels before I head off to random towns in search of sidequests. How far in the main quest would you recommend going before traveling everywhere?

Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.

Philip_J_Reed

Personally, I postponed the main quest after fixing the Galaxy Radio dish. It's a good breaking point (since the next step, if I remember correctly, encourages some exploration anyway), and you don't need to worry about what level you are, as you won't meet creatures that are too much more powerful than you in random encounters anyway.

I would definitely start doing sidequests after you fix the dish. The dish allows you to hear the radio station wherever you are on the map, which is pretty cool (love me some Three Dog), and you'll start to hear tales of your adventures relayed back to you over the airwaves.

@Ravage
I didn't even mess with the main quest for like 20 hours. Just do whatever seems most fun and interesting to you, you'll level up regardless. It is worth mentioning that you might want to knock out whatever side quests you want to complete before getting too far in the main quest.

I love reading everyone's stories here. I usually sell my games after I beat them but no way was I selling fallout3. I still have a lot of stuff to do and i haven't even touched the expansion packs yet. I was mostly good with the exception of the black and white area. I could not figure out how to not be evil in that section. Sadly though i won't be getting fallout new vegas anytime soon. Too many other games to play and not enough time to play this 1.

1 quick question though
i could never get into the washington monument. How do you gain access to it? And with that said i think i'm going to go play fallout 3 right now!

i'm pretty sure they just let you in once you take the GNR mission from Three Dog. maybe he gives you a key or a code?? can't quite remember, but it's where you install the dish once you retrieve it from the museum. i don't remember it being hard to gain access.

I got two Fallout DLC packs yesterday. Point Lookout and Broken Steel.
I'm doing Point Lookout first and so far it's been fun and bug free.

What DLC did you guys buy or which one is your favorite?

@Sean: My cousin got all of the DLC packs as they released, so by the time I went over to his place I got to tackle them all by order, pretty much. I did Anchorage first, followed by The Pitt, Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta (still haven't done Broken Steel because I'm nowhere near far enough along on the main quest, though). As for favorites, I'll list them all by order and state why:

1. The Pitt: Loved its story and atmosphere, but most of all, the awesome weapons you got once you finished it.
2. Operation Anchorage: Overall it's not too thrilling, but you can't argue with the two best pieces of armor in the game.
3. Point Lookout: It has a great, creepy atmosphere, engaging story and some pretty awesome weapons.
4. Mothership Zeta: To tell you the truth, this one was a bit of a chore to do, especially since all the damn corridors on the ship look pretty much identical and it's a huge ship. Another thing I disliked is that you get your gear back pretty much right after the initial cut scene, so it takes away the excitement of it, unlike The Pitt in which you actually have to SPOILER go through the majority of it as a slave, with whatever weapons, ammo and armor you manage to find /SPOILER. The plus about Zeta, though, is that it's an energy weapons treasure trove.
5. Broken Steel: I haven't really played through what this DLC adds, but it raises your level cap to 30, so that's pretty much all I need to know.

@Tech: Broken Steel is the one that raises your level cap to 30, by the way...

I'm enjoying Point Lookout and I helped Desmond kill the brain dude. Forgot his name.
Anyway,I'm very surprised because there's lots more quests to do,especially in the swampy areas.

The only downside to it is that the frame-rate is absolutely terrible sometimes like when a firefight is going on or when an explosion happens or simply just when you encounter enemies.
I also had it freeze three times already since yesterday.

Other than the technical problems,I am enjoying it.
I'm gonna discover all the place's in the game and finish up doing the last quests.
Also as soon as I stepped onto the boat to Point Lookout,I was greeted with this message: 'Fawkes has returned to the underworld'. Hell to the yes. Mah man fawkes is back. :0

Update on Fawkes
So..I board the boat to Point Lookout and I get greeted the message that fawkes who died ages ago on my save data has returned to the underworld.
Ok so i finished Point lookout and head straight to the underworld. I look all over the place for Fawkes. Every room, etc.
I looked up online on where he maybe and they said he should be at the enterace of the underworld which to me surprised me as I did not see fawkes on the way in.

Ok..so I go back out the the entrance and what do i bloody see?
Fawke's body laying on the floor. DEAD.

I can't believe this. He was the best companion ever.

Ah, Tranquility Lane. Probably my second favorite sequence in the game (behind the Vault with the psychotropic drugs). There IS a way to get through it without losing karma, but it requires putting your trust in the old woman rather than the little girl. I'm not going to spoil it unless you'd like me to, in which case I'm happy to do so. But if you just wanted some direction...make sure you're aligning yourself with the right people.

Are you sure you mean the Washington Monument? It's main-quest related, so I thought the granting of access was a given. (Certainly if you made it as far as Tranquility Lane.) It's guarded by the Brotherhood of Steel, and you start to get in their good graces once you do the dish chore for Three Dog. And I think that's actually when you gain access. Don't you need to get to the top of the monument to install the dish? It's been a while...but I do know that access to the Washington Monument is main quest related.

It was actually bloody fun to be evil just in that section though. Still thanks for the info. I'm going to restart the game and work my way up to there again so no spoilers please.

As I recall I never gain access to it and beleave me I wanted in. Maybe it was the path I took because I don't remember the dish at all and I believe I beat the game. Unless there was still more after I didn't do.

Hmm...the dish should have been a pretty early plot quest. Three Dog tells you to repair the dish, in exchange for information about where your father is. It's definitely before Tranquility Lane.

It's possible that you stumbled upon your father's location without even talking to Three Dog, though, which may well render the quest undoable. How did you end up finding your father?

Wow don't remember any of that. It has been a year and a half since I played but do not remember doing that quest and have definitly not been in the Washington Monument. Is it a code he give you. Cus I don't remember getting one from him or the dish. But do remember something about him giving me my father's location.
