Topic: Do you think any new console hardware won't make heavy use of AI upscaling?

I've been thinking about how Switch 2 can deliver such great performance with such humble hardware thanks to DLSS enabling it to render games as low as 640x360p but get quality upscaling to 1080p and you wonder if any new gaming console or dedicated gaming device won't have AI upscaling? It just feels going forward the Switch 2 has transformed gaming hardware with every device now having AI upscaling surely. You would be massively downgrading performance by not having it. When you look at some of the games on Switch 2 that don't make use of DLSS like Mario Kart World while visually pleasing they don't look as cutting edge as the DLSS games like No Mans Sky or Cyberpunk. Mario Kart World looks like something on a lower performance platform to me. I'm in no way saying Mario Kart World has poor graphics just they look like something that doesn't need cutting edge hardware.

It feels like we are moving to a time of the battle of the AI upscalers with the main battle going to be between AMD and Nvidia and the console hardware based on those platforms.

You also wonder if it will enable both Microsoft and Sony to introduce their own hybrid platforms with AI upscaling meaning they don't have to focus on raw performance figures. Sony could release a hybrid console with 3TF in portable mode and 10TF in docked mode but that docked mode could deliver far superior performance to base PS5 thanks to far superior AI upscaling.

It feels like Switch 2 has created an important milestone in console development that will have strong influences going forward.

Meh.

Playstation began utilizing their in-house upscaling PSSR since the PS5 Pro launched.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,555 games (as of March 31st, 2026)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)

@Magician

I don't know much about PSSR and how it compares to be honest. I've watched videos about AI upscaling compared across AMD, Intel and Nvidia and it feels like Nvidia is always slightly ahead at least on the most powerful platforms. However it seem to be Intel that take the middle ground and AMD last. However it also seems AMD has been most conservative in not using system resources like CPU performance too. I'm not sure how PSSR fits in and how competitive it is with those but I know if its important to do so Sony will make sure PSSR outperforms DLSS on Switch 2 for their portable system as Sony is very competitive on hardware unlike Nintendo.

DLSS implementation is a big win for Nintendo on the Switch 2 tbh, we'll definitely get more 'miracle' ports like we did on Switch 1, obviously the added power of Switch 2 helps too.

DLSS is probably still the better upscaling tech over PSSR and FSR too, it'll be interesting to see what happens going forward as it looks like Sony and MS are both going to continue to partner with AMD so they'll be using some form of FSR in future hardware.

i have a feeling a new gen console will soon.
with the rate ai is growing, its inevitable a console would use ai upscaling

heya!
