@VoidofLight I think the characters in the trailer swap outfits a few times, I noticed the protagonist changing from black into more red later in the trailer.

I don't think it's going for the Xenoblade 2 style where what you see is what you get.

Well, its nice to see that a new Xenoblade is coming (though I have yet to finish the second one). However, this probably means botw2 won't release this year. Xenoblade 3 will be this year's big holiday adventure on Switch. And if so, then you can bet your trousers botw2 will become a Switch2 launchtitle.

But back on Xeno 3: I know there's a connection with 1 and 2, but this one seems more connected with the first one. I mean, robots, a Monado-like sword, a darker theme. The artstyle looks also more similar to Xeno 1, though I think it looks a bit rough. I mean, it doesn't look sharper then Xeno 1. Now that we are quite some years in the Switch-lifespan, sure they can pour out sharper graphics?

On a small sidenote: If Nintendo ports all the stuff from Wii u, why not the one that needs it the most, Xenoblade X? That way all the Xenoblade games would be on 1 platform. And they should also ad the Xenogears titles while they are at it. I have never played those Xenogear titles.

I am a terrible person though: I never made it far in Xenoblade X (and the text was to small anyway), and I never finished the first one either although I did spend a insanely amount of time in it.

@Henmii It combines a lot from both games moreso from the first. I also doubt BotW 2 is delayed because of Xenoblade 3. It’s probably the November or December release.

@Varkster It could be that you switch outfits with armor sets, but them switching could also just be just story stuff.

This is very much an "inject directly into my veins" kind of game. I wouldn't be surprised if it rated very highly on Metacritic and is the most successful Xenoblade to date. What we've seen so far looks to be on another level compared to 1&2. The cutscenes look so involved, just far higher production values across the board. Also, the boat sections make me wonder if this is 100% open world (as in, no transitions between areas).

VoidofLight

@Troll_Decimator Same, the boat segments seem more open as a whole, and I have to agree about the cutscenes… the animations are so much more fluid in comparison to 2.

ElRoberico

@Troll_Decimator I very much agree about this potentially being the best received Xenoblade game. I've only played them on Switch, and I know I'm not alone in that regard (although I do have a copy of XCX that I got for my Wii U much later). I hope all that puts it in serious contention for a lot of GOTY discussions, especially as the September game.

@ElRoberico After Tales of Arise being a GOTY contender last year, I would almost be surprised if this isn't, of course it depends on what comes out as well, but it does look next level. XC2 was a bit "too Japanese" perhaps, very very anime, but this one looks a lot more grounded, more practical designs, and frankly, just overall looks a lot better to the casual viewer.

Ralizah

@Troll_Decimator Don't count on it. XCDE was snubbed as well.

Nintendo exclusives that aren't the core Mario/Zelda stuff broadly get ignored during awards season.

Troll_Decimator

@Ralizah So do Tales games. The Definitive Edition was a remaster so it was unlikely to be considered. I am hopeful, but very much depends on what else comes out. We've got Starfield, Horizon... Those will be on the list even if they are ultimately uninspired. Just too big really.

@Troll_Decimator Persona 5 Royal was nominated for RPG of the Year at TGA in the same year despite arguably being less of an upgrade than XCDE overall.

Troll_Decimator

@Ralizah I haven't really played that game but I know it was very successful, I think as long as XC3 sells well, it definitely has a chance. Whether we like it or not, sales do play a role in the awards. But it might be buried by Zelda and other games, assuming Zelda is on track for this year.

@Ralizah @Troll_Decimator

Well the Game Awards are basically a popularity contest so its no surprise that xenoblade didn't win an award despite me thinking they deserve it.
XC2 was only nominated for best score/music iirc.

XC3 will probably get nominated best score/music and RPG of the year.
September may be late (assuming it doesn't get delayed) but not too late for the awards. And if it is too late it can always be nominated next year.

Good... good
Now play Dragon Quest

Xenoblade Chronicles X was actually nominated for best RPG of the year at the game awards in 2016!

@iLikeUrAttitude XC2 missed the cutoff date for inclusion in 2017, and was completely snubbed the next year.

edit: Also worth mentioning Torna: The Golden Country was also completely snubbed at TGA. And before anyone says anything about it being a side-game or DLC or something, The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine DLC won RPG of the Year in 2016.

I don’t think XC2 was nominated for score either, which imo is a bigger snub. 2 is by far my least favourite entry as a game, but perhaps my favourite OST of any game ever.

@Ralizah Torna literally had a physical and digital stand-alone release. It reeks of what others have said. Any kind of game awards only cares about Zelda and 3D Mario. I'm slightly more hopeful with XC3 since it was the top post on the Games subreddit yesterday. Regardless, we'll see.

I haven't had the time to type up anything yesterday because I had to go to work like 10 minutes after the direct but now that I have the time I'm going to make a wishlist of some sorts for Xenoblade 3 and see how it holds up when the game releases

The things that I want from Xenoblade 3 would be:

Customizable outfits - Yeah, this might be a smaller feature but this was one of the reasons why I enjoyed XCDE. They had outfits that matched the scenery and it was super nice!

Good Navigation System - I hope they keep the navigation system from XCDE because I thought it was pretty much perfect. No matter where you were on the map you'd always be able to find your way back to the objective with ease. The follow ball in XCX worked but, in XC2 I had some trouble getting to some areas because of its navigation system.

No requirements for Heart to Hearts - One thing that I like about XC2 was that the heart to hearts wasn't locked behind affinity like in XCDE and in XCX. The heart to hearts add a lot to the characters so I'm kinda surprised that they locked them behind something in the first place. I also hope the heart-to-hearts are voice acted in this game but it won't kill me if they aren't.

Overkill Bonuses - This one might be a bit of a long shot but I really loved overkill bonuses in XC2. I thought it was a pretty cool way to avoid grinding. In XC2 I'd set the difficulty to easy and then fight an enemy that was 5-10 levels higher than me. Every time I got a good overkill bonus I would be able to increase my exp gained by like 500% and level up 2-3 times from one battle. It wasn't always easy to pull off but it felt rewarding every time I did it! I'm not expecting it to come back the same way but I would like it to be in XC3 in somehow.

Better Tutorials - Lol I don't think I need to explain this one. I think they have been improving since XC2 though.

No Field Skills - I really felt like field skills were really unnecessary in XC2. If they do end up bringing them back they need to implement them better. Having to rearrange blades every time just to pass a skill check wasn't exactly fun lol.

Switch characters mid-battle - This one is also a long shot but I feel like Xenoblades combat would benefit if we could switch characters mid-battle like in FF7R. The AI isn't always the smartest lol

Bring Back Tombstones - XC2 was superior in this aspect because if I ever wanted to refight a boss I would just click their tombstone and resummon them. In XCDE the bosses only had a 30% chance of respawning so you had to reload the save file multiple times in hopes of getting the boss to respawn.

Other ways to explore the map - After seeing how fun it was to explore the map in XCX I'm kind of hoping they add other methods of travel in XC3. I never really had a problem traveling on foot but XCX made me want more lol. As I mentioned earlier in the thread though this seems it might be possible based on the trailer.

No Missable Content - Ugh...I have never liked missable content and Xenoblade is full of it...I didn't realize how many things were missable in XCDE until I did a 100% completion playthrough. I get the feeling XC3 will have missable content but I really hope it doesn't.

Better voice direction - I loved the voice acting in the first game and I thought it was pretty good in Torna...but future connected itself had me a little bit concerned. There were a few cases in future connected when the subtitles actually didn't line up with what they were saying. I know future connected isn't really a main game but still...That being said I do like what I've heard in the trailer so far.

Bring Back Expert Mode - I love expert mode so much not only because it prevents you from being over-leveled but it also allows you to do some crazy stuff. I've seen people beat some of the hardest bosses in both XCDE and XC2 at level 1 because of this mode. Dropping bosses 100+ levels higher than you is always fun 😂. I just hope they allow you to use it from the first playthrough like in XCDE.

Good New Game Plus Mode - I don't always replay RPGs but if they've got a good new game plus mode I'm usually willing to do it at a later date. XC2, in particular, has one of the best New game plus modes I have ever seen!

Multiple Save Files - I was so happy when I found out XCDE had multiple save files. It made me sad that XC2 didn't have multiple.

No Gacha System - Unlike most people I didn't hate this mechanic but I would prefer if they moved on from it.

This is all I can think of at the moment, I'll edit this later if I think of anything else lol

EDIT:

Bring back different types of enemy aggro - I just remembered this one! I really liked how in XCDE certain enemies had the "eye" icons which meant if they see you then they'll attack you. Then there were enemies with the "sound" icon which meant if the enemy heard you it would attack you. Enemies with no icons would usually not attack you unless you attack them. None of this showed up in XC2 and sometimes it felt like all enemies would try and attack you which made it tough to explore the map.

I'm so glad that Monolith Soft are so prolific in recent years giving us XC2, Torna and now XC3 which are all legitimately new games, new content.

I took some time and just thought about it and came to conclusion that I play XC games mostly for 3 main reasons:

exploration
great exploration aspect, discovering amazing locales in vast open world areas; great sense of scale usually with several stratum levels;

combat
satisfying combat that could go pretty deep if you're willing to learn it to the fullest potential;

story
story that usually goes from the smallest scale at the start and soars to some cosmic or even god-like levels at the end; I also think that story in XC at some points unravels just by the environment itself, for example even if you miss out on provided story pieces it is still fun to explore the world and build your own background story solely based on what you see and find around yourself;

So having these points in mind and looking at the XC3 trailer I think that:

exploration
world and also an overall visual style here feels like a natural combination of XC1DE and XC2 (titans, horizons, giant blade), with a little nod towards XCX because it gives out a sci-fi flavor right from the beginning; so far having played all of XC games I think that world building and level design picked at XCX which has several continents with astounding environments on several stratums, some beautiful locales and the most tangible sense of a grand scale; if they can repeat that success at least to some extent I'd be happy;

combat
we don't know anything about combat for now, but I'm pretty sure they learned from Torna expansion which has very concise and brisk combat system compared to what we have in XC2; and I kinda expect them to bring some of these improvements into the new game while at the same time keeping it deep and rewarding at its fullest potential unleashed;

story
if the story is on level of XC2 it will be enough for me; if they could go beyond that then all the better;

Regarding somewhat controversial character designs in XC2, I wasn't really bothered by them back at the time so I won't mind it here either. Of course, some of them went overboard on a fan service side, but the rest of them IMO looked either super cool and awesome or just memorable enough to like their personalities. I hope they won't abandon the coolness factor in that regard and make characters all look plain and dull just because there was some kind of a backlash. I think creating memorable and cool designs mixed in with bits of tastefully done fan service could go a long way. Knowing that almost 30% of staff working at the company are women I think they could pull it off with ease and style.

Yeah, this amazed me. At first I thought it was because 2017 had actual amazing osts to compete with which I kinda understood but when I realized it was 2018 and looked at those nominations...no. Inexcusable.
