Looking forward to starting a campaign this evening!

I'm quite tempted to get this if it's on sale. It'd be even sweeter if you can play the same save file on PC and Switch through the cloud, but I'm guessing that isn't a feature with this one. I might get it all the same - the PC version can be for Long War/mods.

I got in the sale (bargain price!) but it’s gonna have to wait til I finish off some other games off first to make space for it.

@BongoBongo

Did you get to play any last night? What were your impressions? I might get it myself, but since it's such a big download, I'd probably set it up to install over night.

One of my concerns, besides the performance, is the issue regarding custom characters and how their data would be wiped periodically. I'd be keen to see if that is still the case, but then again, mods add more to that facet, which is why I subscribed to one on the steam workshop that allows you to effectively field a trooper with the voice of Alex Jones.

@edhe only managed to get round to playing it today as the download took a while and was too busy yesterday

Enjoying it so far but a little bit overwhelming with what they throw at you at the beginning. Getting used to it now though.

Performance wise it’s fine (only some odd frame rate slow downs which don’t make a difference to gameplay) and it looks great. I think they fixed that custom character thing - had no issues with that so far at least

@BongoBongo I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it. From what I could gather from the review, loading times were also an issue at release. Is this still the case?

The loading before each mission (when your squad are in the lander) was notorious for being long until they patched it on the PC (before the Switch game was even a thing, mind you).

@edhe well it’s not fast or anything but it’s not offputtingly slow. I was playing along while watching sport yesterday so didn’t mind waiting a bit

I've had a chance to play the first few missions, and it runs good enough. I might have noticed a few dropped frames during gameplay (definitely some noticeable ones during the intro cutscene with the newscasters), and the loading screens might be a bit longer than the optimised ones on PC, but they give you a little text to read, and some visuals, so it's not the worst thing to have to endure.

On the tutorial mission, as I was getting used to the controls, I did find it a bit awkward getting the pointer to move in a predictable way, but I soon got used to it. It was probably down to the shifted perspective, but a mouse is much more suited to this sort of interface.

A lot of luck goes a long way in your first few missions, and I must say, I was blessed with some great luck. In the first mission, I was a bit brash and opened up an ambush with a sword strike on a captain (one volley is never enough in the early game), supported by overwatch. I cleared out the first group pretty easily, but left the canonical first recruit exposed, and she took a critical. So now she's out of action for 20 days...

In the second mission, I carried over my grenadier and sniper, and both more than proved their worth - the sniper made all 4 of her shots (only one of them was over 70% chance to hit), and the grenadier was able to hit something in overwatch, all of which came together in a perfect mission. I didn't find myself flanked or uneccessarily exposed, and the only harm that befell any of my soldiers was when a sectoid panicked my grenadier.
It was a bit hairy when he ran behind cover and I thought he was opening fire on one of the new recruits, but he was simply aiming for the sectoid (and missing).

Another foible I just thought of is the text windows at base. When the game has a lot of text to display, it slowly scrolls the text. Unfortunately, you aren't seemingly able to control how it scrolls with either of the analogue sticks, so reading the lore text when you research stuff in the labs is a bit of a pain.

I don't think I've ever failed a raid on the resistance before, but in today's session, I suffered an almost total defeat. It started when a faceless spawned and critted my heavy gunner to death. Then I was being held down while all the civilians on the other side of the map were being massacred. Another soldier downed in one.

I only ever saw one civilian in my vicinity, and so I ended the mission with just the one. The sniper I had brought along managed to escape unscathed though, but it could have scuppered my run. I was prompted to do Shen's Last Gift before, and I didn't know what I had let myself into. I barely managed to scrape a victory (only one lost recruit, and the two key units were likely going to die the next turn), but the sniper was the star of the show again, having taken out the final, heavily armoured opponent with a pistol shot.

I don't think she's suffered any damage at all so far. Still, by the time I finished, I had 3 combat ready soldiers, with everyone else being injured. Still waiting for the first ranger to recover.

XCOM makes you feel a bit like an abused spouse. It'll kick you in the teeth, but you still love it and keep coming back for more.

Has anyone played this recently? it's 90% off in the eshop sale! I read there were some performance issues?

@MarioBrickLayer The performance was fine when I last played it, the main talking point on release was a game breaking bug but I never saw it.

The loads time are a pain though!

caved in and bought the xcom2 collection currently on sale. played the first title on xbox back in the day and thought I cant go wrong at this price. Gotta admit the game isnt bad, its actually quite good but man, the port is abysmal, lol. It freezes sometimes, stutters frequently and relatively often refuses to launch, lol. Bottomline for me, for 8 bucks or so its a worthwhile albeit suboptimal experience. If had payed more I would be mad.
