Console games are programmed close to the metal anyways so don't read too much into the Vulcan API. For one thing it's AMD and therefore surely not going to support the Switch. For another thing NVidia are generally a bit better with that sort of thing anyways.

But in general you're right I think. The most vocal people are invested in other platforms. So doom is going to have a much easier time gaining traction. But as someone who thought this is kinda what the Switch would be as far back as last year? I'm not buying into the doom.

@skywake Vulkan is already listed as having the Switch be compliant though soooo the option is there.

Seeing the form factor and what this thing contextually is, im fine with it. As a consumer and developer im sold on the concept alone. For what it is I wouldnt expect anything more.

Im not buying into the doom either but my word the number and frequency of kill nintendo comments is increasing alarmingly. It gets tiring after a while really. Im a patient manchild but come on people, there is GOOD here too. And I really hope it slows down soon because ugh. Nothing worse than feeling restricted in ones hobby, especially when your brain takes away what happiness you have.

You know something that kinda disappoints me with Nintendo consoles and I always hope with each gen they'll be no more?Jaggies and flickering.I think this is the anti aliasing or lack of that causes this?I'm not really up on stuff like that so I've probably worded it wrong but I know it annoys me.The Wii U wasn't too bad for the jaggy edges but flickering lines was still quite bad.Imagine how good Mario Kart 8 would look without it.

@skywake You think with the Switch we'll see an improvement with that?

PowerPC never was the problem. I repeat again, no one is programming games in lower level programming, it is all done in c++. Hardware don't mean that much for programmers.

Things like not being officially supported by unreal, wonky APIs, older shader models and bad support from Nintendo was the problem. Reports have suggested Nintendo didn't even have all manuals in English at launch. This is what made it hard to develop for.

But people only blame what they see.

OorWullie

@Therad I remember reading that about the manuals.I'm sure I read a developer complaining that sometimes they had to wait a few days to get a reply to any questions or problems that came up.Or for it to be properly translated anyway. It seems everything still has to go through Japan. They really need to change that.

With NVidia being behind the wheel? Yeah, definitely.

@BLP_Software
Online, people are... let's not say "dumb," but perhaps "impressionable" would be the best word. I live in the U.S. (not sure if you do), and in order to judge the collective intellect on social media and forums like this, I need only to turn to something like Pizzagate if I'm ever feeling a bit down about what people are insisting is the truth. (If you don't live in the U.S. and have no idea what Pizzagate is, I beg you, PLEASE Google it. It will probably confirm your fears in humanity, but it's something you should know.)

So, my advice is to just let all this negativity roll off you. Fine, I'll say it: people are dumb. People have always been dumb. It's just that now we have the ability to magnify and project our dumbness across the world in millisecond, and the news is no longer left to journalists who have attended college and learned their art over the course of years. "News" is now spread by anybody with a cell phone, keyboard, etc.

All of this doom and gloom about Nintendo is nothing new, but just try to keep in perspective where it is most likely coming from and the likely level of truth behind it all. (Yes, the internet was "right" about the Wii U, but as the saying goes, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.) The Switch isn't even out yet. Judgments cannot be made.

@BLP_Software the problem is that a lot of gamers grew up with Nintendo during the NES and SNES era when Nintendo was at the peak of their popularity with games and power; and because the Wii and the Wii U were catered for casuals along with some 'questionable' decisions, many gamers felt alienated and want to see the glory days of Nintendo back again hence why a lot of them act so emotional and say stuff like 'bring back a traditional console!'. These people tend to be the most vocal and as a result, they get a lot of attention

Also, given the fact that hardware can be a very complicated thing to learn, a lot of people don't really bother trying to do research and tend to just to get on with the point.

I think there's also an issue of perspective. There's an assumption that as a home console it should be on par with the PS4 (or at least the XBox One). But if you look at it as a handheld? Sure, I can understand concerns about build and battery life. But we're about to finally have what is essentially a console experience on the go and I find that quite exciting. And Nintendo have never done us wrong with their handhelds.

I'm not saying that every Nintendo fan has to like it (personal preference and all). I just personally feel that Nintendo are going in the right direction, and that the Switch is in a great position to be a hit.

@rallydefault If recent years taught me anything, it’s that real journalism is done by lone wolfs with a twitter account who actually go some place to report or investigate. You’re right on the credibility of hysteria in general, sure - yet the journalists you think work well with a degree and a job are in the attic regurgitating someone else's twitter sentiment for clicks, sponsored by billionaires with agendas. Sad, but true.

The fun part of social media is that established media no longer controls the narrative you feed with. You can see the same happening in the gaming world. In fact, it had a precursor in the concept of gamergate, but that’s off topic.

Just the story about this tech performance and especially the “concerning no concern" way nintendolife posted it is meant to start discussion. Why? Traffic, attention, bla bla. Now watch them post articles after switch “doesn’t sell” and “why” while hoping to claim more influence while denying it.

People are waking up to what they’re being fed and that’s a good thing. This entire spec discussion is moot. It got nintendolife the clicks, the forum the influx - and that is business. You pay their bills with your attention.

Meanwhile, nintendo has the internet sentiment in their favour this time. It’s the old trick to get the tech nuts to talk about the spec challenges, have that sentiment trickle through, poison the well and kill momentum. Then, write articles about that. Clicks, baby.

And I’m just sitting here because the switch is a kickass concept and a very promising device. Day 1 buy for me

To add to the topic of news, speculation and negative press...

It really frustrates me. As someone who follows Nintendo news fairly closely (even if mostly through Nintendo Life!) I can generally tell what is true, what is false, and what is rumour. However on a few occasions I've had someone gaming-savvy tell me something about the Switch or Zelda which simply isn't true, or at least hasn't been confirmed, presumably based on chit-chat on the internet. It doesn't help that, with the current news drought, every little rumour is blown up: a tweet turns into a news article, into a few youtube videos, etc. This is part of why I appreciated Nintendo directs - Nintendo were generally good at keeping a lid on these, and you can't really dispute what visibly comes right out of Nintendo's mouths.

I just hope that come January the reveal event is appealing enough to push a reset button on everyone's assumptions about the system, and clear enough that we know exactly what we're getting in March.

Even here on Nintendo Life, which I started frequenting because it didn't have the gloom and doom of other sites, we have had an alarming number of negative comments which only spell doom, and and increasing amount of accounts that in every comment say "This sucks! I want Nintendo to go third party!".

I'm not against freedom of speech, but if I don't like something I avoid it. It seems the tendency in internet is that if you don't like something (or if it is popular to not like something, like Nintendo) the jump in to annoy like rabid wolfs.

A lot of people speaking about specs now nothing of them, and just compare them to PS because its popular. Newsflash to all... The Gamecube was the most powerful console of its gen and it still "lost", if we can call it that, to PS2 because of the DVD Player.

I hope January 12th arrives soon and Nintendo kills it at the presentation, so all doomsayers can grab their stuff and get the heck out of the internet, at least for a couple of days. Or hope we have some fantastic exclusives coming so I can eat popcorn while I watch Bayonetta 2 level meltdowns. Either one works at this point.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

People will say what they say, it shouldn't bother anyone past a slight annoyance. Negativity will always be around, I'd suggest avoiding the usual suspect sites if it's that concerning

Talking of doom articles, have a read of this one that popped up on my Google feed. I've never heard of the website before but it's such a poor article written by someone who pretends he's clever and knows what he's talking about. I couldn't help but shake head all the way through it. The fact he fails to even mention Switch once while questioning their future in the industry just makes it even worse.

@OorWullie Thats a prime example and thats only two sjdes people do it from. Thats not covering the other 5 or 6 aspects of Nintendo that get slammed.

Even the comments on that article were either tring to be neuatral and shut down or flat hate. And thats sad.

@OorWullie Very strange that the article didn't so much as mention the Switch.

Things haven’t gotten much better since. Nintendo’s part-interest in The Pokémon Company gave it some lift after this summer’s Pokémon Go phenomenon, but by Halloween the game had already shed 60 percent of its users.

I think this is an interesting example of how perspective can change things. Pokemon Go's success is really understated with the intention of arguing towards Nintendo's struggles.

@BLP_Software Yep, Nintendo can be accused of being out of touch with a few things but not as out of touch on the subject of gaming as this writer pretends to be so knowledgeable about. To be fair to the commenters, there's a fair few defending Nintendo and mocking the author . This one made me laugh though. I've only included excerpts of it

''Nintendo really should become a third party developer. The Switch is going to get crushed.

Still, SEGA made the transition successfully, so we've got every reason to think that Nintendo can do it, too.''
