With the announcement of how Splatoon 2 will be handling voice-chat with that odd device, I would like to know everyone's thoughts on the matter while I give my 2 cents.
It's a blunder. Sony and Microsoft has had this down since the 360 and PS3 and to an extent, the PSP. Where everything has been evolving into wireless, Nintendo shoves a load of wires our way. I don't get how we can't just plug in our mics to the system and start chatting, wouldn't that have been easier to do? To me, this makes no sense, shows Nintendo still hasn't caught up with the times and it should worry Nintendo that Sony is rumored to make a Switch competitor.
There's probably something fundamental to the Switch's hardware, firmware or operating system which prevents a simpler solution.
Regarding rumours about Sony making a competitor, that's unfounded and most likely not true. And if it is, it will create competition for Nintendo, driving costs down for consumers.
The headset is a real mess isn't it? I'm not into it but never played Splatoon or online SSB so I don't know when I would use voice chat. But that's just me.
For those that want it though, if I were in your shoes I'd be pretty disappointed right about now!
Some of Mario Odyssey is seriously giving heart palpitations.... that plumber is trying to kill me!

A match in Splatoon is, what, three minutes? You wouldn't need it. Don't see much use for it in Smash or Mario Kart either.
I don't mind that chat is handled through a smart phone, it means I don't have to bother with muting people and all that. I get to opt out.
@David_Dudeney I think it's the hardware. The Switch probably doesn't have the necessary components to mix the audio of the game and the audio from the headsets. That's what the squid-shaped piece does.
And yeah, there's no way Sony is planning to put out new hardware any time soon. They're in the lead, they don't need to react to what their competitors do.
I think the reasoning is because there's no mobile Internet with the Switch. Yeah you would be able to use voice chat at home but how would you on the go? At least that is what it sounded like to me when Reggie explained it awhile ago.

As I understand it, the headset only has to be connected to both a smart device and your Switch if you want to hear both voice chat and game sounds through them...the wire from the smart device carries voice chat, the wire from the Switch carries game sounds - so if, as I prefer, you'd only want voice chat coming through the headset, you'd only need to have the headset plugged in to a smart device (not the Switch) - so it'd effectively only be one wire (via a redundant mid-line splitter) in that instance...
Yeah, I'm pretty sure there is a completely wireless option, which boils down to game sounds through your TV or Switch speakers and voice chat on your phone speaker/mic.
I just want modern Voice Chat. I want voices, sound effects, music, the whole shabang coming through my headset like it does when I play Overwatch or other multiplayer games I play on my PS4 daily... Why cant it just be normal???? 👿
@Samus7Killer When I play PS4, I can't hear voice chat very clearly if I have the 'whole shabang' coming through the headset - I much prefer just having chat coming through and having game sounds etc coming from the TV instead (..and even got myself a specially designed Turtle Beach 'off ear' headset that allows me to chat, but still hear the TV in stereo - works a treat! ..for me at least) ...I fear that players like yourself, who prefer to have the full rainbow of sounds coming through, will have to endure 'wire hell' unfortunately
@NaviAndMii maybe your headset sucks....I'm using Sony's Platinum set.. And its super perfect. Has volume, a mute button and 3D Surrond Sound and has the chat/game volume too...(No ones on mic?? Fine then, i can easily switch the game volume up..) Its all about the right balance. And it only takes a second to mess with. Literally like 1 second. The Platinums are Super Perfect. Love Them! Just sad that nintendos VC We will be fumbling around with our phones. Phones are thrown in the corner of the room while gaming. I aint got time for thAt nor a spider web of wires to mess with. Very Sad 😢
@Samus7Killer
This, exactly. I've used headset mics on PS4, Xbox, and PC. It's a pretty simple process, and if any tinkering with audio settings is needed, it's never been more than a few minutes to get everything in a good balance.
Honestly, it's a bummer that (for now) Switch voice chat is kinda convoluted. My situation is a relatively unique one, though: I'm not going to be able to have the Switch app AT ALL because I use a Windows phone (and I really like Windows phones, actually). So... I don't really know where that leaves me as the app becomes more robust in the future. Guess we'll have to see. Rumor has it that Microsoft will be launching a Surface phone in the near future, so we'll see if that happens and if it gets any support.
Messin' with your phone while gaming is just Uuuuh😒 As if the world needed people on the phones even more than they already are is pretty dang lame while gaming.
@Samus7Killer@rallydefault Nah, for me it's just a preference - no amount of rebalancing will help...plus, with this kind of set-up (especially with my 'off-ear' headset) I can still chat to my girlfriend if she's also in the room, so it just works for me. I totally get where you guys are coming from though - the PS4 caters for all preferences equally, the Switch is going to force you guys to endure 'wire hell'...that kinda sucks!
im just happy that there is gonna be a voice chat setup for nintendo. im just hoping that there is gonna be an adapter so i can use my own headphones and dont have to buy the nintendo ones.
