Topic: Upgrading SD card issue

I recently got a 256gb micro SD card to give a bit more space from my existing 128gb. I've followed the process over and over of copying the original, then taking that data on to the new card. But every time I put it in the switch I get the message saying that card is formatted to use on another switch and I need to delete and reformat. I've done this several times and still no joy. Has anyone else had this problem?

If I can't resolve this, and go down the route of re downloading off the eshop will I actually lose much? I think all game save data is on the switch so it's just photos and video clips?

@Chris77 While the card is blank, did you try having the Switch format it? If this is exactly what you did, forgive me. Otherwise, I have not seen the issue you're running into.

Here's the generic "how to format micro sd card" page for the Switch.

This confirms save data remains on the Switch internal memory.

Can I move data from the system memory to a microSD card?

Screenshots and captured gameplay videos can be moved from the system memory to a microSD card, and vice versa. You can also transfer downloadable software if the system is updated to Version 10.0.0 or higher.

When a microSD card is inserted in the console, it becomes the default save location for downloadable software.

Game save data cannot be copied to a microSD card.

@WoomyNNYes hey, thanks for that. Unfortunately yes I did. Most instructions I found skipped that part but I also tried having the switch format the card.

@Chris77 I wonder if formatting the card on a desktop might wipe whatever makes the Switch think the card is from another Switch? (granted, you may have tried that, too)

@WoomyNNYes yep, tried a desktop format too, checked the format type and it's fine, everything up to date. Might have to chalk this one up to experience.

Now you can transfer between SD card & internal memory, what I'd do is transfer as much to latter as possible, put in new card & format it, then transfer games to it ..... Or just redownload? There isn't an approved process for copying games from one SD card to another

@BruceCM thanks, this is what I've done. Found where to move my screenshots across and everything else I'll download again. The switch is a wonderful device but this process is not good. I got this a couple of months after launch, so the only thing I can think of now is when an SD card was formatted then by a switch is different to how is formatted now but I can't be the only one to have seen this problem.

Downloading everything now, but most importantly Animal Crossing seems to have lost nothing.

I blame NBA2K, if that hadn't been £2.50 last week I wouldn't have upgraded the memory card!

Others have found it with moving games but I think they ended up re-downloading them, @Chris77 ..... As long as you've done it all now, though When I went from original Switch to a Lite, there wasn't any option to move stuff & I had to re-format the SD card, too

@WoomyNNYes I didn't. I tried their online forums but couldn't find anything beyond the normal. I don't get much time in the day to call them so in the end transferred as much data back to the switch and then set everything to download again. Hopefully it's completed everything by the end of work.

What I see going on here is that you did a direct copy to the other card rather then first using the Switch to format the new card and then using your computer to copy the older sd card to computer and then copying the data to the new card but don't overwrite the Nintendo SyS file that was created on the new card. That way only your saves/data move not the Root Folder. That is why it does a checksum and it in other words is saying what it is saying. I know this because that's how I moved from 256gb to a 400gb card. My next move is the 1tb if prices come down eventually. Then I can reload all my other cards to go hopefully. Also NIN does tell you to download and use a software that formats MicroSD cards prior to use as well so if you didn't do this then your new card that you copied the old Root folder will not work. So until you do this to clear it you won't be able to use it now.
