Topic: The Mario Galaxy Series Should Continue as a Rosalina Spinoff

Ever since Galaxy and Galaxy 2 graced the Wii there's been several requests for Nintendo to create a third entry in the series. The gravity mechanics definitely offer a fun and unique gameplay style that they could continue with further entries. I've seen this even more so revisiting the game through 3D All Stars and after watching Barry Kramer's video criticizing the game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxCyq4c07hI), there is so much more potential to this series than what's been realized. However, the Galaxy series is somewhat limiting to Mario and the series has moved in a different direction since. So instead, how about bringing the series back as a Rosalina spinoff? Rosalina's identity was formed by the Galaxy series and she's a popular enough character to carry the series, so having her star in future Galaxy games could make some sense. So what do you think? Would you like to see Galaxy 3 as a Rosalina game? What do you think they could do with this?

At least if Rosalina had her own game people would stop asking why is the princess from Frozen in Smash Bros.

I think Rosalina could get a lot more character development from a new game, but I also don't think that's entirely necessary. She works better as a mystery to be uncovered.

I don't think she needs her own game is is a woman of mystery, if we are talking about some won who needs a game bowser should get his own game I just think it suck bowser dose not have his own game.

Nah. Mario has got enough spin-offs already.

@Apportal @Snatcher This is Nintendo we're talking about, their stories typically aren't Pulitzer Prize stuff. They can make her a main character while still retaining the air of mystery surrounding her, the plot can be as simple as "some intergalactic bad guy steals the Power Stars/captures Lumas, go stop them". The reason I'm suggesting this is because of the gameplay, not the plot. Galaxy's gameplay is just removed enough from traditional Mario gameplay and still has a lot of potential to expand on.

As far as specifics, here's how I think they can build on Galaxy's gameplay:

-Make the game more of an open world sandbox. Make some larger, more complex planets and make galaxies where you can travel to whatever planet you want. In that video, Barry also suggests making the Red Star a bigger part of the gameplay and allowing you to fly around space (perhaps with some limits on distance or time to prevent you from skipping the entire game)

-More types of Prankster Comets. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 had some good ones, but there's still some tweaking that needs to be done. Keep Speedy, Daredevil, Cosmic (with Cosmic Clones, not the races), and Purple Comets. Fast Foes can stay, but we actually need to see Fast Foes, not just Fast Obstacles. Just having Thwomps and Tox Boxes move fast doesn't really do much, let's see some where regular enemies move faster, or bosses use faster attacks that are tougher to dodge. As for some new ones, maybe they could experiment with more that hinder Rosalina's movement such as reversing controls or not jumping, or Comets that mess with the environment such as water turning to ice or lava.

-Involve the Lumas in the gameplay more. They could help Rosalina with useful abilities. For example, maybe Yellow Lumas could turn into Sling Stars that Rosalina could use to reach higher platforms, Red Lumas could give Rosalina a powered up Spin Move that could defeat enemies in a certain range (kind of like the Spin Throw in Odyssey). Lumas could also explore smaller spaces that Rosalina couldn't.

-Perhaps color coded Stars? We already have Green Stars for hidden Stars randomly placed in the levels, perhaps they could do Yellow Stars for regular missions, Purple Stars for Prankster Comets. This could also tie into the above mechanic by having certain stars upgrade different Lumas' abilities.

Counterpoint, a Rosalina game would probably be better and more interesting then another NSMB or golf game.

Also Mario and Luigi is presumably dead, so there's a spot open for a new one.

@Snatcher It would, but there's no Rising of the Shield Hero video game... yet.

No, it's less about giving Rosalina a video game and more about what can be done with Galaxy's gameplay. Making it into a Rosalina spinoff is just a convenient solution that also gives a popular character their own video game.

@Bolt_Strike I always thought the different colored stars would be helpful to track down what missions you did in Galaxy, so I’d be happy for that to return.

Honestly your ideas are pretty reasonable and although I don’t necessarily want a Rosalina Spin-off, it sure would be awesome.

Making a Mario game without "Mario" in the title is just a guaranteed way to make sure it doesn't sell. Like when they made Super Princess Peach on the DS. It was a fairly good game, from what I played, but it sold almost nothing compared to NSMB because it just isn't a well-known name.
Rosalina is even less familiar, so the problem would be even moreso.

@Dezzy Then they could start with Super Mario Galaxy: and then put the title for the Rosalina game.

@Apportal

But that would come across as dishonest if Mario isn't the main character.

My point being that if they're going to make a game that clearly is mario in every sense of the gameplay and style, they really should just use him as a character, because he's so identifiable to everyone, that the game naturally attracts more attention.

If they want to create new characters for things, I think they should just divorce it from Mario. Like they did with Splatoon, which supposedly did begin as an idea for a Mario game. But they divided it off and gave it a very different sense of character.

@Dezzy That is also true. You need to take into consideration if they were to make another space-themed series and claim it as "original" I'm sure there would be fans complaining it was too similar to Galaxy 1 and 2.

If it was somehow as crazy and diverse as Splatoon I'd gladly take it.

@Apportal

Yes, that's my point. I don't they can make another game that is clearly Mario Galaxy, without calling it Mario Galaxy (and having mario as the main character).

They could, but it would just confuse and annoy plenty of people, so it would do worse than if they just stuck with Mario. If they want another thing in space, they just have to make enough effort to show that it's a different thing. Like Metroid. No-one's gonna confuse Metroid for a Mario Galaxy game.

It's not like I need to give Nintendo advice though. They're already incredibly good at this. They understand branding and how to communicate ideas to people very well.

That would sell about as well as a Zelda game starring Zelda. Fun idea as that might be it ain't gonna happen.
Someone mentioned super princess peach and i only recently started playing that for the first time and frankly I'm loving it! Shame i passed on it originally because i just assumed it was a lame game for girls. It's actually really fun and cute!

@Dezzy made some good points.

Luigi's Mansion and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Whenever a Mario character got their own game it was because the gameplay is vastly different to that of traditional Mario games. That's the first and foremost reason, because they wanted to ''give them their own game''. If it's just going to be Mario Galaxy with Rosaline, it should be Mario Galaxy 3 with Mario. I don't think either is going to happen at this point.

Octane

StuTwo

Nope.

I think the chance for Galaxy 3 has been and gone.

To be honest I don't see what you'd get extra from a gameplay perspective anyway. The back half of 3D World could easily have been given a slightly different coat of paint and badged up as "Galaxy 3" (and you could even play as Rosalina...) but I think it benefitted from being liberated from the Galaxy framework.

If you're going "open world" or exploratory then why make it Galaxy 3 instead of Odyssey 2? The defining features of the Galaxy games are the (light implementation of) pointer controls (that's compromised on Switch...) and the mostly tight, mostly linear obstacle course design.

Having Rosalina as a playable character choice in Odyssey 2 - sure! I'd be happy with that.

How bout a new 2D game in the galaxy style. That could be something new and different. So tired of NSMB and mario maker. Remember when mario went to the moon on gameboy? It could be something like that.

"Freedom is the right of all sentient beings" Optimus Prime

Bolt_Strike

@Dezzy @Octane Not always. Captain Toad is pretty much a Mario game without jumping, and while that is significant enough to change the gameplay, I'd hardly call it a different "style" than Mario. Also, you forgot Yoshi, which is very much like Mario except with the ability to throw eggs. Hell, Yoshi is even still playable in certain Mario games, which blurs the line even further. Rosalina and Mario Galaxy's gameplay isn't any more similar than those games.

@StuTwo No, you're forgetting the biggest defining feature of Galaxy by far, which is the gravity mechanics. That's what would separate a sandbox Galaxy from Odyssey, and what already separates a linear Galaxy from 3D World. The gravity mechanics allow for different kinds of levels that require a different approach than typical Mario levels, with less focus on precise, acrobatic platforming and more focus on properly orienting yourself in dynamically changing gravity. 3D World and Odyssey are somewhat of a "return to form" for Mario and more reminiscent of the direction they want to proceed in for the series, meanwhile Galaxy still has untapped potential and more they could do with the gravity mechanics. That's my main reason for suggesting this.
