Topic: Tactical and/or RPG games that aren't super cutscene heavy

Hi everyone,

I really enjoy playing Triangle Strategy, but am looking for a game that lends itself better to short playthroughs. I like tactical team based RPGs mostly for this, that have terrain and maps to move through — fighting without that isn't super interesting to me. I am looking for either a long story-heavy game without a lot of cut scenes, or a game that allows for picking up and playing without having to go through lots of cutscenes. Was looking at Cross Code, but I don't like puzzles at all, so even though the combat and story look great, I will pass on it.

Options are:

  • Tangledeep (not tactical, but looks really good to me)
  • Wargroove (or Wargroove 2)
  • Tactics Ogre
  • Into the Breach

I am probably most drawn to Tangledeep of these, but actually can't find that much information about it online compared to lots of other games. It seems rich and complex, with options to make it easier. Really just looking for any options here that I haven't listed or that are less obvious picks for this type of play. Thanks!

Yousef-

You may wanna give disgaea a look. It’s not on the short side, but it’s much more gameplay driven.

SteamWorld Heist II came out yesterday so I have to mention the first game which was my favorite strategy game on 3DS. Its enhanced version, SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition, has been heavily discounted from time to time, going as low as -90% off. Well worth picking up next time it goes on sale.

I'm 2/3rds into Unicorn Overlord and it seems like it would be right up your street. The story is pretty serviceable and forgettable, but it's incredibly unobtrusive - it's all about the gameplay. There's also a massive and very generous free demo on the eshop that you can try out, and if you like it, it carries across to the full game!
