Has anyone come up with a permanent fix for this? I tried turning off the device completely. I tried restarting my router several times. I feel like unless my switches directly next to the router it doesn't work at all. Is this something that I need to send in to get fixed or is it a permanent problem?
@Optimusprimez10 Are you not connecting at all? My router is in the basement about 30 feet away and while I have usually one bar to no bars I've never had a problem connecting. It's almost as if the bars are wrong on the signal strength.

"Bars" don't actually mean anything in general. They are just a visual indicator that's supposed to show how good the signal is. But what is actually shown varies from device to device. There may even be an incentive for devices to report "full reception" more often than not just to make the device look better.
What actually matters is link speed. The Switch doesn't report it directly but on my access point it has reported that the Switch often connects at 110-150Mbps. For comparison the 3DS can only connect at 50Mbps because of the lower spec Wi-Fi

My Switch actually never has an issue connecting to my router in the basement, even though speed tests are not accurate I get better results on my Switch than any other device in the same room
Mine wasn't working because it was too far away (even though all my other devices work fine) so I sucked it up and bought a wifi extender for $25AUD. Now it works fine. I don't know if you want the hassle of going through Nintendo and maybe they will do nothing so you might consider it. It was easy to set up and works fine. With ARMs coming out tomorrow, I needed to make sure I could play online from my TV.

Same with me. Router is down the hallway in another room with the door closed. Never have any issues.

I can confirm this. The switch seems to easily hit 150mbps and probably a lot more. The rssi and noise signal all look good from my network to the switch, I'm not sure the bars mean much.
It downloads my full retail games faster than I can grab a drink and a bag of chips, so that average download over my bandwidth is regularly well over 12MB. With two bars in the interface.
I find that the Switch is quite susceptible to interference. Try keeping it away from other devices or turning them off. System Settings has a connection test you can use to check your download/upload speed.
