Topic: Switch V1 vs V2?

Hi,

I have a V1 console at the moment, and I'm wondering if I should change to the V2?

Reason being is that I know the V2 has less heat build up, and the V1 did have the 'warping' effect due to heat.

Not fussed about battery life, but I am bothered about overall lifespan.

Any ideas? Thanks.

If you have a V1 and play mostly docked, there's almost no reason to upgrade to a V2. However, if you play primarily in handheld or tabletop mode, upgrading to a V2 is recommended (although still not entirely necessary).

Nvidia discontinued the old 20nm Tegra chip in the V1 Switch to a more energy efficient 16nm Tegra chip. Because of that the V2 Switch runs cooler and for longer on the same battery.

I couldn’t have answered any better

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

If you can get a trade in credit and they allow you to transfer you data to the new one before giving it up then do that otherwise you will have to find a way to sell the old one after transferring your data. This is on the Nintendo Support page so read up on this.

I updated because I could get the credit and was able to transfer my data to the new one before trading so that helped me. But this depends on the retailer your trading it at otherwise you will have to buy the new one then transfer the data and resale or trade the older unit in.

TRUST me it's worth it if you can do this. Don't believe others telling you otherwise. Even the small upgrade is still worth it. You don't know when the Switch 2.0 Pro model is coming out so having a update is better then anything nothing if you had it since March 2017 release date.

It’s been a little while now. Has the upgrade been worth it? I’ve been thinking about it lately. I play handheld for the most part. But mostly at home. Kinda don’t feel the upgrade would be as useful. What’s everyone else think that upgraded?

If you're worried about the console warping and failing, I don't think you need to worry. I've had mine since launch, play daily, with no issue. I do have just the slightest bit of warping but you really have to look close to see it. I've also not read about anyone having any heat related issues. Yes, it does get warm, but that's it. Maybe in a few more years there might start being some issues but so far, nothing I have heard of.

Not worried about warping. Had mine since launch. Mainly talking about the extra battery life.

V2 also has a warmer colour palete on it's screen than V1.
Which one is better? All up to personal preference.

The warping issue is all blown out of control. It's 99% a non issue. Only a fool would use that excuse to upgrade their switch.

The battery life is a legit reason though but only if you play your Switch portably for long enough that you need the upgraded battery.

Honestly, in my opinion, unless you really need a few hours more battery, I'd say it's not worth upgrading.

Based on my experience so far, it's not worth upgrading unless you're gagging for more battery. If you want a second Switch then sure, get V2, but I've not noticed any positive differences (other than the battery) since owning one. Just the other day I was playing (Rocket League I think) docked and when I undocked it I noticed how hot it was (I usually play handheld).

My v1 did get that strange damage to the vent grill and the mysterious hole appearing near the power button, but my v2 is probably still too young for a fair comparison on that issue.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

At this point the v2 is the one selling the v1 are only at used retailers only now.

This was a user abused caused issue I've seen the picture and when asked to evidence of it they stopped responding because when called out they stop talking. And I owned and played hard my Switch for 2+ years and had nothing like what they claimed.

I did for that reason but if you go getting a Switch now only the v2 is the new unit to buy there is no longer any v1 out there. Only used shops would have v1 units.

Unless this is a new Switch then buy all means get the v2 - sure a 2.0 Switch is coming but if not end of this year is the most likely we will hear about it.

I don't think I'm going to worry about getting a V2. Doesn't seem worth the hassle when I have a battery bank. Unless something happens to my original, I'll stick with it and wait on an actual upgraded Switch.

Also worth remembering for some that a v1 Switch has a certain in-built unpatchable 'vulnerability' that we're not allowed to discuss, whereas v2 has had that addressed, as I understand it.

Very true. It's hard to get a new V1 Switch anymore.

That's only useful for the Switch homebrew scene. The firmware and OS updates keep both versions safe for every customer.
