Topic: Switch Pro Controller issue? Are all D'Pads too sensitive or is mine broken?

Hi

I played the Puyo Puyo Tetris demo last night and had the problem that I often accidentally dropped the pieces (pushing up) when all I wanted was to move them left and right.

In the controller settings you can see if all the buttons function correctly: Test input devices -> Test controller buttons. Left and right input work normal, but if my finger is just a bit off, the Switch registers an up-button press. So technically the D'Pad works, but as my Puyo Puyo Tetris problem showed: In hectic situations it's too easy to get an unintended up-input.

To compare I checked the d'pad input of the Wii U Pro Controller and the Xbox One Controller on pc: No false up-input, even if press left/right deliberately careless.

Could those of you who own a pro controller check to see if that is "normal" and something I just have to get used to? I found someone complaining about this on the gamefaq forum, but otherwise hear nothing but praise for the pro controller. So i wonder if people just haven't noticed this, because the Puyo Puyo Demo is the only game really affected by this, or if I (and the guy or girl on gamefaq) got a faulty pro controller

i'll have to check mine. I did notice that mine was acting weird when i was trying to input text like username and password onscreen... seemed like it would end up on a wrong line...

Yes. I'm having the same issue with mine. I press right to change weapon in Breath of the Wild but I get the runes instead (which is up). I'm going to get it replaced tomorrow.

Mine seems to be functioning just fine while playing BOTW, so if cris0631 is having an issue with it, I'd assume you have an overly sensative d-pad. Maybe the sensors underneath aren't seated correctly and they're sticking up too far, hence the ease of accidental activation of the "up" command. Who knows. As long as you can find a store with a replacement, I'm sure you wont have an issue doing a swap and see how it goes. Let us know if you guys do get new ones! I'm curious.

I had to drive to three different stores to find the Pro controller. Even when I let go of d-pad right then press it again it would sometimes register as up again. Feelsbadman.

If theres really ALSO an issue with the pro controller....the 70 pro.controller...then i will smash it and make a youtube video for nintendo ...i dont care about the 70 but its the last 70 i will spend on any nintendo product before receiving working euiptment.

Having said that, i did not have any issues yet....yet that is...still.no time for puyo puyo...but this better be a 1 in a million flaw...usually their pro controllers are (expensive) very good

Thanks for checking. I bought King of Fighters 98 just to see how it would play with the pro controller. I expected to accidentally jump all the time while moving left and right, but I had zero problems. Even when the gameplay gets hectic my fighters would only jump when I wanted to jump.

I also have no problems using the D-Pad in Zelda, but Puyo Puyo Tetris is absolutely unplayable with my Pro Controller.

When even the replacement you got has the problem, i guess it is save to assume this issue is more widespread.

Right now I'm very disappointed. Screen scratching docks, melting screen protectors and now this... Most people affected probably won't know till they play a game that demands d'pad precision like Tetris.

EDIT: Checked Zelda again. I had no problems during gameplay, but now i tried pressing left and right continuously, and it does happen there too. Its the right side of the d'pad. If my thumb is just a fraction too high the d'pad gets the up-input instead of right. Left side is solid, no matter how often or deliberately imprecise i pushed left, it would always get the left input.

I think I will return it to Amazon, but have to wait, because it's sold out.

I'm having this exact same issue with my pro controller aswell, and if I try and play super fast then it happens quite frequently

@Mikesahhh That sucks.

I have to wait three weeks till Amazon can send a replacement and after hearing this is not just my controller, i believe this is indeed more widespread and many people haven't noticed this , because not a lot of US or European Switch owners have tried the Tetris demo with a pro controller.

Would be interesting to see if this is mentioned on Japanese sites and forums more often, because they have the both game and the Pro Controller officially available.

After two of weeks of searching for the pro controller, I finally found one at a Target store today. Just one. It still has the same D-Pad problem like the one I returned. I play BotW mostly. If I don't press right on the center of D-Pad Right and instead press on the top right corner of D-Pad Right, it will detect it as up. I was fighting a Lynel right before this, and I was getting the runes instead of changing weapon when I pressed D-Pad Right. I don't most people are noticing this problem. They probably think they just keep pressing the wrong button.

I am having the same problem and I think this is an issue present in the initial batch of the Pro controller not just few and it's not just the Dpad but the Joystick as well and you won't notice this when playing a game like Breath of the wild because it does not require quick and small precise movements, now play a game like Blaster Master 0 or any platformer or side scrolling games and its not only noticeable but quite unplayable. I ordered 3 Pro controllers mistakenly and didn't manage to cancel the unwanted two so i received all three but the two were ready to be returned with return labels printed when i started playing Blaster Master 0 i started noticing this problem as i couldn't direct my character to my desire. And upon playing around i noticed the Dpad being too sensitive and the main problem came after that when i noticed the Joysticks registers unwanted directions. Upon fiddling around a little i found out that if i kept Pressing on the same direction it automatically flips to the Other direction. Like if i kept moving right with multiple rapid taps the Joystick would go nuts and register a different directions same for right don't know about up and down. Just to confirm if it was just that one game, i tried it on the system UI and eShop and the results were same, i got so curious and bummed that i opened up the rest of the Pro controllers that i was supposed to return just to test if this problem was just limited to my controller so i could just swap instead of having to go through the process of exchange and to my surprise the other controllers showed the exact same problems with same experiences and now I'm torn between if this is just a software issue that maybe could be fixed with an update or if the initial batch has this problem and just return all three. Sounds like a software issue but Nintendo hasn't made any notices and it could as well have been a issue while production like the ones with the joy cons so maybe I'll just return all three. You will not notice this In a game like Zelda as i've finished the game on it without noticing it but with platformers and side scrollers where you need small, precise and quick movements it's almost unplayable.

I have exact same issue on d-pad and joystick
kept pressing on the same direction it automatically flips to the Other direction

I go back to exchange another pro controller, turns out the same.

@kenhongkong For some reason it's just the joystick for me, the d-pad works fine. Although it's only a real problem and noticeable in the top-down sections of Blaster Master Zero. Best Case Scenario: Patch Incoming? Re-calibrating doesn't seem to work and the stick works fine in Binding of Isaac...

try to use the pro controller on Tetris (you can download the demo)
play it with the d pad and you will understand what the problem is.

i tried a few pro controllers in the store, and they all had similar issue, which is annoying.

I tested my D-pad inputs in the system settings and right has a strong tendency to register as up, up as right, left as up, down as left, and diagonals as just the up/down component. Some poor guy on youtube got a D-pad that registers left as the photo capture. I don't know how common the problem is, but my store didn't seem surprised or question me at all when I said mine was defective, and they found one in stock at a nearby store but weren't too surprised it was on hold for someone else that needed a replacement. Still waiting for a replacement, and I honestly thought they would get one this week with new systems coming in. I wonder if Nintendo has realized the problem and stopped shipping out new Pros till it's resolved. Really, really surprised a controller this expensive works so poorly, but it does feel great in the hands, so I hope I can get a working one eventually.

Krambo42

I had the exact same issue with the PPT demo. Very frustrating. I haven't tried it with the directional buttons on the joycons yet, but I'm guessing that might work better. I love the pro controller, but I just don't see it being great for this particular game.

Krambo42

iphys

PPT is okay with the directional buttons, but feels more sluggish to have to actually move your thumb up to hard drop rather than tilt a normal D-pad, and sometimes I miss the button and that wastes even more time. My fastest 40 lines so far is 1 minute 7 seconds, and I know I should easily be under a minute with a proper D-pad. If I can't get a Pro controller with a working D-pad, I'm going to be somewhat disappointed with having to use the Joy-Con directional buttons. The whole reason I bought the Pro controller was to have a proper D-pad for playing Tetris.

jedisaga

I have one and have played BOTW and Fast RMX and haven't experienced any issues with the controller. You may have a defective unit.

@Krambo42 the joy cons won't have any problem whatsoever so play with that this is a Pro controller issue. I contacted Nintendo and they've asked me to contact them and they'll look into repair lol

Kuhang

@jedisaga Like I said above you will not notice one bit in those games as I completed Breath of the wild with the Pro controller without noticing the problem. Read what I've said above for further details.
