@Paraka
Unfortunately this is the nature of physical publication now.
In Ty's case, it's a publisher not willing to cover the costs of a second physical game, or a cart large enough to store both games.
In Monster Boy's case, like many others it's a case of getting a physical release done sooner than later.
With LRG releases you can often be assured you get all the updates on the cart because they happen much later than the initial digital release, but not always. You sometimes get small patches later, or you get cases like Blasphemous.
Patches exists because mistakes happen, do you know that the Atooi Collection release on 3DS has a fatal bug that makes Chicken Wiggle impossible to complete? The game crashes every time you try to play the final level.
Unfortunately it often cannot be the case that later patches are put onto a reprinted game, and the only time I've seen any publisher offer a reprint to customers is Strictly Limited Games for the "Baron is back" update of Bubble Bobble 4 Friends.
This goes against preservation, which unfortunately means it falls upon the consumers to preserve the update data through unauthorised means.
@RupeeClock - I do understand proper patching and such, and it's not where my bitterness resides.
Mine moreso resides in the constant waves of re-releases over a period of time after telling people, "This is it, seriously." So FOMO kicks in, invests and more releases come out with content on-cart. They're by far not the only to do this.
I understand it, but that doesn't mean I have to like it, per se.
Ty is a completely different reason, I would have bought both for 30 a piece or a complete double pack at 60, maybe even 70, knowing they're playable without a required patch.
@Magician
Yes, the exact reason why I wouldn't buy Western physical releases of Mega Man Legacy Collection titles. I did not want half a physical release, half a digital release.
Understandable. And on the same note, my missing the Rockman 5-in-1 when it was $70 will be my biggest Switch collecting regret. I can see the Mega Man Legacy 2 physical being one of the Switch collecting holy grails down the road. About as desirable as the Bayonetta 1 physical, if not more so.
P.S. - LRG accidentally tweeted that they'll be serving up a physical release for Neon Abyss.
The tweet was quickly deleted, but the cat's out of the bag.
@Magician
Yes, the Rockman 5 in 1 Special Box goes for a crazy sum these days, and I ordered mine from Amazon.co.jp for around £94 including shipping, receiving it around the end of 2019.
If I were to part with it, it could cover the expense of a PS5 or something.
Ah, I wasn't necessarily expecting LRG to publish Neon Abyss, but on other hand, LRG have been helping Team 17 with the US publication and distribution of certain titles.
Which is to say, we can possibly expect a more sensible and more data complete EU retail release of Neon Abyss in the future, like with Blasphemous.
@RupeeClock
Ty the Tasmanian Devil ?? 🤣
It was Taz the Tasmanian Devil.
About Ty the Tasmanian Tiger games, there is always the PS2 / Gamecube / XBOX version to get those games in physical media with all contents inside the disc.
A quiet day today so far. Death End Re;Quest 2 and Blue Reflection: Second Light standard editions opened to retail preorders yesterday here in Murica. I wonder how long we'll have to wait to hear about the Spiritfarer Collector's Edition from iam8bit? I'm a little miffed the standard edition has a 1.4 GB patch, so I'm hopeful the swanky CE will have it all on cartridge.
iam8bit could probably get away with highway robbery on the asking price for the CE, the game is excellent. I just hope it isn't $250 like they asked for the Disco Elysium CE.
FDG Entertainment have confirmed that the collector's edition of Monster Boy, the one with all the updates on the game card, will be distributed through Limited Run Games in the near future.
An important distinction they've made is that the PS4 disc does not contain any updates, if you are interested in the PS4 edition. It's simply a re-pressing of the 1.0 release.
So the RAG version of Hardcore Mecha only has version 1.0.0 on the cartridge. You'll have to download a 4.8 GB patch. Needless to say...I'm severely disappointed; in terms of preservation this copy of the game has almost no value. What did I wait a year for when I could've bought a Japanese copy?
@Magician
That's appalling, but I think I see what happened.
Apparently the Japanese print of Hardcode Mecha when dumped is already 7.25 GB.
This strikes me as Red Art Games being unwilling to pay for 16 GB physical carts just to get the update data on the cart.

The LRG release won't be the complete game? I really liked the trailer when it was released, but I haven't kept up with what's going on with it, how do you know it won't be complete?
RupeeClock is making a fair assumption. Traditionally, games published by Team17 have a long post launch development tail. Lots of post-patching for the games they publish. Which is great if you buy digitally, but a nightmare for collectors.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,555 games (as of March 31st, 2026)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)
@Magician
Looks like I'm placing that Monster Boy order on the 24th then.
I already have the game with what I think is probably v1.0.0 on the cartridge, I'm not too concerned about not having the very latest update on the cart in this case, I believe they are primarily bug fixes and small QoL improvements, rather than essential content updates.
I want to order it as a gift for someone who's a big Wonder Boy / Monster Land enthusiast, having enjoyed all of the games in the series.
@MarioBrickLayer
As Magician says, it's an educated observation about developer and publisher practices of both parties involved.
Whilst LRG like to tout that they release fully complete physical releases, that only goes as far as the actual developer holding that same ideal, such as with Celeste and the "Farewell" DLC that held by physical fulfilment by a solid year.
Team 17 have demonstrated a preference for getting physical copies in peoples hands before development wraps up permanently, at least for the US market.
@MarioBrickLayer
No, I was saying that Celeste is data complete, as both LRG and the developer wished to make it a data complete release.
They waited until the final DLC was completed to begin pressing game cards.
Neon Abyss has been properly announced now, it's actually a distribution release rather than an LRG numbered release.
It happens to be going on sale at the same time as the Monster Boy collector's edition, August 24th 12pm eastern (5pm BST).
Concerns of data completeness aside, I'll be grabbing a copy.
