Hello,
Intermittently my Switch has said 'SD card has been removed' (when it hasn't). I only have one card. Yesterday it finally won't recognise it all. I've bought an adapter so I can look at the SD card on my PC. It sees files. I have no idea what they mean but I am copying and pasting them onto the PC. I've ordered a new SD card as well. I have two questions, because I find this all a bit confusing:
1. Can I transfer the original SD card files onto a new one easily enough, and then carry on playing where I left off (which includes all my TOTK progress!).
2. My Switch says everything is saved on the 'cloud'. Is this relevant or helpful? The option to download the file on the Switch is greyed out, but I am guessing that's because there isn't much space left on the console without the SD card in?
I hope this makes sense and am very grateful for any help or advice!
The intermittent "sd card has been removed" may mean your card reader is faulty, as far as I know. The card reader can be replaced. I don't know for a fact that this is the only reason you can encounter that issue. If someone else here knows otherwise, chime in. If you talk to nintendo support, the first question they will ask will likely be, "is your console up to date?". So, as a formality, make sure the console is updated.
Game save data is stored separate from the games in its own spot on switch internal memory. So, if you change micro SD cards, or change physical game copies, your game save data is safe & still on the console. If you lose your cartridge & borrow a friends, you'll still resume your game save progress.
When you boot up a game, the switch makes you chose which switch user icon to boot up with, that's your game save profile, basically.
1) After you transfer to a new sd card, you will resume your game progress like nothing happened. You cannot pick and chose game files to transfer. You transfer the whole Nintendo folder.
2) If you removed your sd card and the cloud save download option is grayed out, I think that makes sense since your game save data is still on the Switch's internal memory, not on the sd card. So, I don't believe it's grayed out because of lack of space. You'll get a prompt saying you don't have enough space.
While the NSO cloud backs up game save data, some games do not have NSO cloud save support. Nintendo support has a page with a list of games that don't have cloud save support. Here's the list: https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a...
@WoomyNNYes thank you so much! My new SD card should arrive tomorrow so I’ll first see if my Switch recognises it. I may ask you for more advice. Thank you!
@laura_er_84 It's been a while since I upgraded my card. If the switch doesn't want to recognize your new card, you may have to format the card with the switch itself. Good luck.
@WoomyNNYes well the Switch doesn’t see the new memory card that arrived today. So I’m guessing this means it must be the Switch’s card reader at fault? 😭
@laura_er_84 If that's the case, I'm sorry to hear. If it's something you want to fix yourself, the card reader may be the easiest part to access. I appears, all you have to do is remove the back cover of the switch and the card reader is right there, held in with one screw. And carefully plug in the new one. Granted, you'll need one of those tri wing screwdrivers for the switch screws.
Or you can look for a console repair place to see if they offer the service.
Before the pandemic, nintendo aimed to return your switch within two weeks, I think, but I don't know how it is these days. And I understand if this not an attractive option.
@WoomyNNYes hello! So I sent my Switch to Nintendo for diagnosis and repair. It’s taken them weeks to diagnose because of an apparent back log. Anyway the diagnoses have come back as:
JOY-CON LEFT NEON BLUE:
FAULTY STICK
PROBLEMS ATTACHING / DETACHING FROM THE CONSOLE
WORN HOUSING
JOY-CON RIGHT NEON RED:
FAULTY STICK
PROBLEMS ATTACHING / DETACHING FROM THE CONSOLE
MICRO SD CARD:
RETURN WITHOUT REPAIR
NINTENDO SWITCH GAME CARD:
NO ACTION IS TAKEN FOR THIS PRODUCT, RETURN WITHOUT REPAIR
NINTENDO SWITCH HW:
LIQUID DAMAGED USB TYPE-C CONNECTOR ON MAIN BOARD, IRREPARABLE CONSOLE
Does this explain the SD card not being read though? I’ve paid for the repair. I am just curious! The switch was charging just fine and I though the USB C port was to do with the charging ability…
@laura_er_84 It almost looks like they didn't try to reproduce the problem you sent it in for - testing a card in the card reader. Did the repair person just get the console without knowing what your problem was?(rhetorical question). Oof! That's disappointing.
I have no idea if the liquid damage they mention could have anything to do with the card reader. The usb C port is for charging, outputting video/audio to the tv, and controller inputs for wired controller connection.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure you can do anything else with Nintendo(given what you describe). I guess your decision comes down to whether you want to try to fix/replace the card reader, or get a new switch.
On a positive note, you can still trade that console to get half, or more, of your money back for your current switch (last I knew, used switches are still worth a good amount of money). If you want to get a new switch, you'll need to buy the new switch first to perform the Switch User transfer, then trade in your old switch for money after. But check out much you can get for it first.
@WoomyNNYes thank you! That’s helpful to know. I’ve emailed them first to see if they’ve actually looked at the problem I sent it in for… ?! It’s a bit odd because the Switch was charging just fine.
@laura_er_84 Do any of their faults listed match what you know about your console? Is it possible the issues nintendo listed were for someone else's switch by mistake?
I have to admit. I think I've seen someone else here say they got their switch back from nintendo of north america, and nintendo didn't find the failure the owner sent it in for, and didn't fix the issue. But it's been so long since that happened, I'm not sure how accurate my memory is, or how credible the user was.
@WoomyNNYes latest update. Nintendo said that they’re replacing the whole console because the liquid damage was irreparable. So any issue with the SD card reader is irrelevant because the whole console will be new. Costing £120 including VAT. I’ve paid for it. Can’t wait to get it back. Thanks again for your help and expertise!
@laura_er_84 Ohhh. So you're getting a switch out of that? Oh, that's better than not fixing it.🤣 That sounds like a decent outcome. Glad to hear. You're welcome.
