One of the things that, on one hand, I love and, on the other hand, that troubles me tremendously about not only our fanbase but about the gaming community at large is that, whenever you share information, the perspective is, 'Thank you, but I want more.' 'Thank you, but give me more.' I mean, it is insatiable.

Case in point, this thread. Oy.
Exactly. Nintendo could be offering us a free SNES/NES game each month, improved online (yes, whatever that means, but perhaps voice chat, smoother jump-in matchmaking, refined friends system, exclusive discounts, etc.) for like 2 bucks a month, and people will still complain. They probably want all that for free, because Nintendo isn't a company that needs to make money or anything.
Because let's be honest - many here are saying "Oh, the Wii U/3DS online is great. Why don't they just keep this and not charge us?" Well, because we're in the year 2017, and the competition is doing things with their online services that put "free" to shame. Nintendo is NOT going to attract new customers with the same, bare bones, free online service. If you want the Switch to just be another Wii U seller of around 13 million and maybe be Nintendo's last console, then fine, but I don't. I want them to rise to their competition and offer similar perks, not refuse to change and stagnate into oblivion.
If they want to copy the competition so bad I hope they also copy the other, better, more consumer friendly parts and not just the online charge because "The other guys are doing it".
Even better, if they're doing things that put free "to shame", they better be doing similar things with their new infrastructure.
The point being, Nintendo has shown absolutely 0 reason leading up to this announcement that they'll have something on par with the other guys. We have no reason to believe that it'll suddenly be an amazing, integrated, well-run and stable online experience for the Switch.
So we can't say for sure yet until we see it put through its paces and what they offer with it, but peoples' skepticism is -very- warranted.
To be fair, I feel like this thread is exactly why it's free for the first few months. At least then, we'll know what it's like without having to pay. The entire point should logically be to convince you that it's good enough online that you would want to pay, I'd presume.
@kkslider5552000 Good point there, that can become even better if it is also a transition phase to introduce the achievements through My Nintendo, or any other way they will connect it (because i think they will do it someday)

Yeah that's true. Precisely because people are probably skeptical is most likely why they're offering a trial of it.
Also of course so they can stress test their stuff and won't face the horrible backlash they would if something went down and people paid for it.
