I'm quickly running out of space on my SD card, if I buy a new one is it just a case of copying the data from my old one to the new one? There's no fiddly Nintendo rules I need to follow?

@javman05
Computer software cannot tell the difference between the data on one SD card and another SD card with the data from the former SD card copy pasted onto it.

Unless your SD card needs to be formatted in a certain way before use or has been partitioned, (very unlikely and extremely unlikely, respectfully) you should encounter no problems.

I've heard you can, but I had issues.

Easiest way is to just pop out the old, pop in the new, and click each icon to begin downloading.

Then leave it alone for a while, or overnight if it's a ton of games, and it'll be ready for you in the morning.

Yep. Just copy from one to another and you're good to go.

Just yesterday I transferred 90+ gigs from my nearly full 256 card to the new 200 one I just bought. It took over 10 hours! My internet isn't particularity slow either. A 4 gb movie usually takes around 25 minutes to DL.

I assume the price for the 400 gb cards will continue to drop and I plan on buying one or two of them when that happens. It will probably take a full day to move all my stuff over to one of those monsters.

Did you read Nintendo instructions about SD migration to larger SD card if not you should do that before you change out the SD cards. You have to format the new SD with Nintendo instructions on how to do it right and all I did was use the SD reader copy the data to a folder on the computer (don't mess with it's content) as is and then take out and save it to safe location. Then take the new SD card and follow Nintendo instructions to format to NS specs and all you do after that is copy the save Nintendo folder and copy or move to the new SD and pop in and power up and wolla it knows no difference. That how I did when going from 200gb to 400gb and had no issues even with 5.0 update later.

READ this before you do anything!!!!!!!!!!!

If you follow their instructions then you should be set.

Do what @SwitchForce said and follow the instructions from Nintendo. It's not hard but better safe than sorry. There is no worry about save data, since that is all on the system, but if something goes wrong you could lose your screenshots and have to redownload your games. Depending on your internet and number of games, that could take a while.

What's the problem with larger SD cards? I didn't see any mention of that on the page you linked
