Topic: Screen Protectors? Y or N?

I hate them! I've tried about 10 on my Switch and every time, I either get a 'edge bubble' that's there forever, or distracting marks underneath.

I've now decided to give up for the sake of my OCD and not have it protected. I never take it outside. My little boy has an Amazon Fire tablet and over 6 months only has a very tine minor scratch on it, so I figure what's the point!

I did also have a clear back case for it and joy con cases, but I'm taking them off. I'm having it bare!

Does everyone else bother with protection? Surely the screen can't scratch that easily?

I don't think you'll get bubbles with a tempered glass one...

You do, and I have! I'm maybe being too obsessive over it

I know you get bubbles with film protectors but tempered glass you don’t.

AND if you do get a bubbles that means the surface had dirt or dust on it. Even if you do get small bubbles, leave it overnight and they usually all go away

Maybe the screen is warped a little. I bought a plastic film protector for my Switch in March 2017, it went on perfectly and is still on now. No issues.

It's also worth remembering that once the screen is displaying something, any little imperfections tend to be unnoticeable anyway.

@jay81uk Yes of course. Scratches are bound to happen on a plastic screen, so for me, it's a no-brainer.
I have always used them, ever since the 3DS and Wii U. I don't apply them myself, but let my local game shop do it for me, and besides a little "edge bubble" that I now have on my Switch after little over a year, I don't have any other annoying things on my screen. And the edges are outside of the game screen anyways, so I couldn't care less that they're there.

Having my screen protected is far more important than becoming frustrated over it not having perfectly airtight edges...

I bought the official Nintendo one today. It's not glass, but it's thicker than the old style protectors. Not film style, a much thicker plastic. It's gone on perfectly.

It'll protect me against scratches which is what I wanted. It's insured too with no excess so if I'm unlucky enough to smash it, it's covered.

@jay81uk fair enough, glad you got one that worked for you. Generally if I buy a device with a screen I also buy the tempered glass screen protector for it and put it on as soon as it comes out the box, no time for dust to make bubbles!

I've had a tempered glass one on mine since like a month after launch. No bubbles, but it does have this one speck of dirt that I can see whenever I start looking for it lol

But anyway, that protector has saved my screen more than once. It's all chipped and stuff around the very edges (it's in that black area so it doesn't block the graphics at all) with all its battle scars lol

I had a plastic one at launch, which tore or something when I put it in the dock. Then I bought a tempered glass 2 pack. Cracked the first one along the middle and replaced it, this one now has a small crack in the corner. The set had a lifetime warranty the covers everything, so if a pro comes out with a similar screen, I'll end up claiming that.

I applied a glass one right after getting my switch and it’s been there since then. Looking pretty much the same as it did about two years ago.

I remember it had several bubbles around the edges when I first put it, but they were gone overnight.

I totally recommend getting a glass screen protector, not only do they do their job, they actually make the switch's screen feel a lot fancier.

I hate them with a passion and have never used them as they compromise the integrity of the display (how ironic). I want to see the screen as it ought to be seen.

And if I happen to receive a secondhand phone with a screen protector, I take it off immediately.

I don't make a habit of dropping expensive electronics (despite my clumsiness), so I'll take my chances. If at some point I need to replace an electronic device due to negligence, that is my burden to bear (and that has never happened in all my years), but that still wouldn't incentivise me to use a screen protector.

I can understand why parents would buy them for their children, but I think most have been hoodwinked into believing that they are a necessity. If they were, manufacturers ought to integrate them into the device itself.

No way! Too much hassel and all they do is get dust trapped under the screen or air bubbles. Here's an idea, Play carefully. Don't go thrashing away at the screen with a freddy Krueger glove and you should be fine.

I always use screen protectors for whatever has a touchscreen as even small scratches bother me to no end; then there's all those used DS and their screens which are full of scratches everywhere. Should anything happen I can easily replace a protector sheet, fixing a screen is a way bigger problem. It also relieves some of the "I hope I won't damage my screen" anxiety when cleaning off dirt since you can - carefully, of course - clean or scratch it off on the spot without worries.

My DS was my first touchscreen device and thanks to Lost In Blue's janky minigames my screen protector's in a fairly bad shape and visibly worn down. Needless to say I'm glad I used it instead of damaging my actual screen.

Regarding bubbles, I've never had any issues with those and I've applied six sheets so far (DS, 3DS, Wii U, Switch). Might've had a tiny bubble or two right after applying one but you can just "shove" them away as instructed in those manuals. I got one tiny speck of dust trapped in with my DS and Switch but that was my own fault - plus that can be fixed as well+, I just couldn't be bothered to do that.

+: Lift a corner of your sheet (e. g. by using adhesive tape if you can't peel it), use adhesive tape to "catch" that speck by dabbing it, lower sheet again. Haven't tried it myself yet but iirc that's what those instructions always said.

Temper glass never had problem putting them on only when you do it wrong then it's problem. But scratches on the Switch screen can happen.

Yep, plastic screen protector, i never use glass, even on my phones or tablets. You get used to applying it. I do have dust and bubbles on my Switch, but you only notice it if the screen is off and i usually play on the tv anyway. Great thing about the plastic screen protectors, it is easy to remove if you want to replace it with something else.

The only time I used a screen protector was for my N3DS XL, and that's only because using the stylus felt scratchy for some reason. Took me a lot of time to get used to it and I still wish I didn't have to.

Never used one on my other three (3)DS models and never had any issues with damage. Then again, I honestly don't understand what people are doing with their devices. My DS Lite survived three Pokemon Ranger games in addition to everything else I played without ANY noticeable scratches.

It's not that hard to apply one needs to take time and effort and it pays off. I done it with three already of which I traded one in and did a small scratch on one but go it covered.

if you happen to do a glass screen protector properly it can look amazing and be fine even for smug OCD ppl

I just havent used one, my first one was almost perfect but i lifted it up wrong and had to dispose of it cause i cant stand even 1 bubble (wouldnt have had a bubble but i messed up)

and I think it's perfectly fine to not use one, I dont. I also avoid jimmying it weirdly in the dock and am careful when putting in/removing (i dont use any extra fabric for padding or anything)

maybe the worst thing that can happen is if u got nails.. so girls probably should have a screen protector

I havent scratched even a ds or 3ds at all it's just not that likely
