@Mr-Fuggles777 Careful. You are now in the territory of asking Nintendo to compete with 'big boy gaming'. They came to the conclusion decades a go that's not healthy. It's also not who they are (and never have been to be fair.)

@Madao This is true. For all we know, their R&D department has been researching game ideas with holograms, and their next console projects them in your living room haha.

Have we had any details/rumours about how a pro would perform handheld?

I've already got consoles that run 4k on the TV and I'm not interested in buying a new system that can just about manage last gen (ps4/XB1) games.
I only use my switch as a handheld device and there hasnt really been any mention of handheld upgrades beyond a slightly larger screen - do you think it would it still be stuck at 720/1080 or would we at least get into the realm of 1440 if it utilises DLSS upscaling as it looks like it will hit 4k (upscaled) docked.

Would a switch Pro also unlock higher framerates on older games like the Series X does on last gen titles? I'm not expecting 120FPS (Nintendo will still lag behind by a gen) but hopefully games like BotW will get a 60FPS boost along with a visual upgrade.

"In handheld mode, the performance will be enough to deliver 120fps at 720p, but Nintendo will likely stop at 60fps at the same resolution. This is easy to believe, given the parameters assigned to the console. It also hints that the screen resolution will remain at 720p, which will have a positive effect on performance and autonomy.
In stationary mode, the performance will already be sufficient for gaming at 1440p."

I did not mean that it would kill off the switch but more than likely that whatever comes next would replace the current model which is doing so well still making it obsolete unless theres a backwords compatability somehow.

@skywake if they can't improve the display handheld the why not just scrap the hybrid function and go for a TV only console for the Pro and really push the specs? - they would be saving money on the screen and could potentially match the Series S, rather than trying to match last gen hardware like PS4 and XB1. It would also be more cost effective for the consumer that way.

So you're saying they should make a more premium product that has LESS features than the current Switch? Yeah, that makes total sense

@skywake if it only has increased resolution when docked it already has less features for us handheld only gamers

Will wait and see what's announced

@Mr-Fuggles777
That's not how "less" works. Currently we have a Switch that usually sits around 1080p docked and 720p undocked. Lets say a game like Smash Bros which hits both 1080p/60 docked and 720p/60 docked on the current Switch. If a Switch Pro released and didn't give you any additional frames or pixels in Smash? That's not LESS than the current Switch.

Also I'd argue that if it has an OLED screen that's automatically more for people who like to use the Switch portably. Because the big improvements in displays for gaming over the last 5-10 years hasn't been resolution. It has mostly been in HDR and, for gaming in particular, Variable Refresh Rate as well as higher refresh rate displays. A 7" OLED panel is already more of an upgrade than the internal spec upgrade could be for a portable Switch experience.

Also while we don't know the spec of the OLED panel the Switch is using Samsung do have a fair number of high refresh rate OLED panels. It could easily be a 90Hz or 120Hz panel. And being a gaming focused device with an NVidia developed SoC VRR should be on the table. So even if there wasn't a performance bump, even if it was clocked the same as the current Switch. It would feel smoother.

I expect the Switch Pro to be more of an upgrade in portable mode than it is on the TV. And I think that despite being fairly confident they're not going to push the resolution above 720p. There's more to a game looking good and running well than the number of pixels.

One question I have is regarding the actual act of undocking and switching from TV to portable. Most of the discussions have centered around one or the other.

If docked is using software to up res it, and you undock the system, and maybe software is going to still assist it in someway, I wonder what impact that will have on basically the thing about the Switch (the Switchyness if you will) that captured people's imaginations. Sure, it might not have any.

@GrailUK
That already happens on the current Switch. For example BotW goes from 900p docked to 720p undocked and reduces the texture filtering detail. Basically it drops to something similar to the spec the Wii U runs the game at in portable mode. DLSS is, more or less, basically a kind of super-sampling AA that just happens to be used to run games at a higher resolution. I see no reason why they can't turn it on/off on the fly.

skywake

and there it is

edit: on their site they list that it has upgraded the internal storage to 64GB. Dock does have a LAN port and it does indeed have a 7" OLED panel. They also list that the battery life is the same as the 2019 revision. No additional specs listed beyond that so hard to tell if there are any additional upgrades under the hood beyond storage

@Slowdive The rumours could perhaps be split between 2 different models, the ones about the OLED screen be connected to this model meanwhile the rumours regarding more power, DLSS, etc. being for a different model or a successor launching later.

That's a big ol' "eh" from me. Solid choice if you don't already have a switch, or your current model is getting a bit old 'n crusty, but not a particularly exciting upgrade if you've already got a switch in good working order. Price seems a little on the steep side too for what they've upgraded.

They haven't announced a price anywhere have they? I have a switch but may consider getting this, since mine is an original model and I could give it (the old one) to my friend who doesnt have one.
Also, I really like the white joy cons and dock. Very stylish.

The RRP in Aus is $540AU up from $400AU which..... is a pretty steep price if it really is just an OLED panel. I mean there's double the storage and a built in LAN port but with the price of MicroSD cards and LAN adapters that's hardly worth a $140AU premium. At that price, as great as an OLED panel is, I'm not picking it up if that really is all we get. Guess I'm spending my tax return on something other than a new Switch this year

@Balta666
Not sure where they're digging those specs from. I mean I don't really doubt it since they didn't call it out in the trailer and it'd be an easy marketing point. But still kinda suprised that, at this price, there would be no significant spec bump. Should really be HDR at the very least. I guess we'll get a clearer picture if they are (or aren't) any other improvements in the coming months.

Also, improved sound..... that was a super odd callout. I was watching the trailer and was kinda thinking they were implying Atmos. But then the specs you listed mention 5.1PCM. I guess they just meant it has marginally larger drivers? Very strange.
