Topic: Question - Transferring Data to Micro SD Card from the Internal Memory

Hello, I was hoping someone who knows a little more could help me out with an answer to a question.

If I decide to transfer games/data/software from my Switch's internal memory to my micro SD card, what happens to my save game files?

I understand that it explains that the 'save game' data will not necessarily transfer across to the SD card but what I want to know is, does the 'save game' data get erased from the switch's internal memory when you make the transfer or does it stay saved on the system while the rest of software's files moves across?

And if its the latter, are those save games still playable - even if the save data is on the internal memory but the software is on the SD card?

Apologies if the answer to these questions are obvious or common knowledge, but I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry!

Your save files will be ok. They only way your switch will delete your save data, is if you ask it to do it.

As far as I know, all save data is stored in the internal memory. Though I might wrong.

Save data is on internal memory & can't be transferred to sd-card .... The only way to delete it is deliberately, since you'd have to go into settings, to data management, down to save data, select the one to delete, then wait until it lets you confirm that

@BruceCM For my understanding, Save data can be transferred to another Switch console, but not to Micro Sd cards.

(Anyone else reading, Animal Crossing New Horizon is an exception. ACNH save data cannot be transferred to another console)

Yeah, they didn't ask about transferring it to another Switch, so I didn't cover that, @WoomyNNYes

As WoomyNNYes says ACNH is the exceptions unless they change that. You should read up on Nintendo FAQ site for data migration help that is your best resource here. As for transfer you need to have NIN account to do data migration if you don't have that then you have no way to transfer to New Switch. As to the Game data/Updates if you changed it correctly saves to the MicroSD. But just poping into another Switch doesn't work as each formats a checksum so that you can't cheat or do hacking. The card must be formatted BY the New Switch that is the only way to get it working. Then using a computer you can copy your old files from the MicroSD and then copy to the New MicroSD but only the files don't copy the Root Sys files if you do that the New Switch will say your card is invalid. So format the new one and then copy the data to the new microsd and that will allow data on the microsd to work on the New Switch. This isn't a simple file transfter they did this to prevent cheater and hackers.
