Oftentimes games get swamped by other games' releases and the accompanying press coverage. Or they just don't get reviewed as well, or they are older already. But sometimes it happens to me, that I pickup a game with little to no expectations and it turns out to be a great piece of entertainment.

I figured if we shared our findings, we can expose each other to great games we'd otherwise have overlooked.

So, I'll start with HYRULE WARRIOS DEFINITIVE EDITION

I just picked it up, never liked the Warriors games too much back in the day, but a new coat of paint, thumping Zelda themes, cute cutscenes and a really crips framerate (gutfeeling is it's 60 fps most of the time) make this really enjoyable to me. Sure, it doesn't require too much brains, but for a relaxing bout of half an hour or a little more - what each mission usually takes me to complete - it's great wholesome fun. Also coop is nice too!

If you're an rpg fan I recommend Battle Chasers Nightwar. Due to the limitations of the Switch there are some frequent and long-ish load times. But the game otherwise runs well and looks gorgeous. And there's a nice bit of challenge with the gameplay and rpg systems.

@Magician Ah thank you, I've heard about it before, only positives though! Will put it on my "buy when on sale" list!

Furi and Return of the Obra Dinn are the ones that come to mind. Great games that don't get talked about all that much.

The game that was tucked away in between a ton of releases and a hectic summer was Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. It's not hidden by any means but I dont think it got enough attention because of 2019s release schedule.

I have two games, that initially I didn't expect much, but ended up really loving them!

First one is Ori and the Blind Forest. I didn't know anything about the game, except that there was a lot of hype around it coming to Switch. Out of curiosity I downloaded the demo and got immediately hooked. It has a very touching story, great platforming, and the art style and music are just amazing. Through exploring you earn upgrades and get new abilities that open up new areas. It's really a great game! I really hope the sequel will eventually make its way the Switch.

Second one is Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. I bought this game only because it was heavily discounted and had good reviews. Played it one year later, mainly because I had nothing else to play. This is a game I learned to love while playing. It's a really fresh implementation of the tactical RPG genre and the music and the art style are absolutely fantastic! Ended up playing it for more than 100 hours (DLC included)! I can highly recommend this game. Fingers crossed for a sequel!

I have been playing RAD (Double Fine game) lately. I am surprised how much I like the 80s aethestic, and the gameplay mechanics. Not only that though, I also enjoy the music, and the different selection of combo attacks that help break up the monotony of rogue lite games. Pretty good stuff considering it was on sale for like 7 bucks or something.

I never like any shooter games due to too brutal for my gaming rules that only accept rated Everyone until Teen, but surprisingly only Metroid Prime Federation Force 3DS & Ratchet & Clank games are the only exceptional due to softer version in my judgement.
I have to deliberate very long and tight before consider my first shooter from Nintendo , Metroid Prime Federation Force. The things i judged first was the Violence level. As i saw age rating Teen and Everyone 10+, i watched the gameplay from Youtube to measure the impact of the violence level from those games.
I need several weeks to engage with Federation Force but i need almost 3 years to suddenly consider Ratchet & Clank PS3 games as i wasn't familiar with those franchise. Surprisingly, within 1 month i quickly enjoy my first R&C PS3 game : A Crack in Time and within 5 months i have collected ALL Seven R&C PS3 games.
But, i still never allowed Splatoon and especially Fortnite as the gameplay looked similar with rated 18+ shooter games that i really hate most. Those are extremely crossing my lines.

Really interesting suggestions in here so far. I have to say I also really enjoy IRONCAST - if you like Bejeweled-style puzzling with lots of strategy in a steampunk setting, this is for you! Poured countless hours in. Really a small gem!

Immortal Redneck. A lot like Serious Sam but with "rogue like" elements. Plenty of different classes to unlock and a deep skill tree. Great mindless fun.

It's been a few years ago now, but my best experience with an unexpected amazing game was 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. I bought it on a whim because I heard it was good, it sat on a shelf for years, then I finally played it blind and was completely immersed. Definately one of my most rewarding experiences as an adult gamer.

Radiant Historia was a game I didn't know existed until 2 weeks before release and then it became one of my favorite JRPGs.

Mario + Rabbids was one that I picked up because it was super cheap on the eShop one day, and I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it or play it. It’s not my favorite genre of games, and I was never a big fan of the Rabbid characters.

Eventually I really dug into the game and I couldn’t put it down once I got into the third or fourth battle. Everything about that game just works so well, even though it doesn’t seem like it should. HUGE favorite in my library and I would LOVE if there were a sequel someday.

@spiderman0616 I really enjoyed Mario + Rabbids too. I wonder, now that XCOM is actually available for the switch, how it will hold up. But the setting, tone and mood alone will set it apart in it's own respect. A true undervalued gem. Wish we'd get more in that vein.

I'd also be up for new genres with Nintendo Characters, what about an MMO for example?

Three hit games I stumbled upon completely by accident:

1. Tale of Wuxia for the PC. It's a Chines RPG, bad translation, AMAZING gameplay and story. My favorite game of all time.
2. Fairy Fencer F. JRPG, played it on PC originally but it's on Switch too. Such an underrated gem. Great story, great voice cast.
3. Thea: The Awakening. Got it on sale on the Switch, great strategy game with RPG and 'city building' elements, really enjoyed it.

I picked up Fire Emblem: Three Houses last week, and my god what a treat that game has been. Not only is it scratching my itch for more Mario + Rabbids style gameplay, but it’s also just a brilliantly designed game overall. I ended up being pretty lukewarm on Dragon Quest XI, but this Fire Emblem game is blowing my mind.
