Somehow, we still don't have a dedicated Pikmin thread? So here we go.

Was watching the live stream, and I wanted to discuss the controls. The ability to invert both axes individually, and full either motion or standard control options? Crazy to see in a game developed by Nintendo proper, but I'm happy to see a decent controls menu.

Also, the radar settings are very nice as well.

Co-Op looks super easy to use as well (which is great), not much to say there.

Ultra Spicy mode limiting the party to 60 Pikmin sounds like a great way to force you to rethink the entire game. I'm curious to see what other differences there are.

Olimar and Louie's missions look like a fun mix-up to the main story missions.

Anyways, what's everyone else's thoughts?

EDIT: Also, demo confirmed that unlocks Ultra Spicy mode instantly in the full title.

I think the "We need Pikmin 3 on Switch" thread will be changed to the OG Pikmin 3 thread tbh.

Heck ya I’m hyped!

Pikmin 3 is one of my absolute favorite games I played on the Wii U. It’s so unique. The gyro and lock on is mega hype. I was so worried they wouldn’t include gyro. The relief is real.

Impatiently waiting on that demo to drop. Come on Nintendo, let’s go already!

I played through Pikmin 3 with its release on Wii U. I enjoyed the game, but not enough to double-dip for a full priced Switch copy on day one. Though I'll be sure to grab a copy when it goes on discount somewhere. No rush; most of the sub-10 million-sold first party Switch games get temporarily dropped to $40 infrequently throughout the year, usually during seasonal or holiday sales.

Oh man, this game is perfection. It’s even better than I’d hoped.

The controls are PERFECT. They’re perfect. Select Gyro > Pointer in the settings. It feels identical to the Wiimote. I never dreamed they’d get the gyro this good (and even doubted they’d include it in the first place) but they did it.

And the HD rumble is so on point. Even the individual text of letters appearing on the screen causes a very slight inner rumble that’s just so immersive. Nintendo really knows how to use that HD rumble properly!

Demo also unlocks the Ultra Spicy difficulty out of the gate in the full game. Save data transfers.

Here’s the 3 Pikmin Short Movies created by Miamoto that were sold on the 3DS and Wii U eShops. Nintendo has released on YouTube.

The gyro controls feel extremely weird on my Lite. I honestly wish I could just use the touchscreen.

I can't really get any consistent results with gyro in this game. Perhaps it's better if you play in tabletop/tv mode.

@JaxonH I’ll have to check out the gyro controls, but for the most part I’ll probably stick to touchscreen.

It’s going to take some time getting used to not having map to look at while playing, but I’m sure it won’t be that big a deal.

Can we get an overview of the changes and suck for the game. 1080p docked 720handheld? I’m playing the demo right now and it’s just as a amazing as I remember. Did they make it look better graphically at all?

If there's a free demo, I'll give it a try.

@Eel
Seems Gyro Pointer works horribly on the Lite! WTH? I just tried it and ya, it sucks. It’s not reliable at all.

It works PERFECT with a controller though. I don’t get it. Probably because Lite doesn’t use the joycon gyro, but instead uses the system gyro.

edit
Seems it’s only really designed for controllers to imitate a pointer. If you Switch it from Pointer controls to Stick, but with Gyro on, it works way better on the Lite. Uses analog GameCube controls, but with a smidge of gyro to help aim. Can’t rely on just the gyro, it’s not sensitive enough, it’s just there for fine tuning.

Ok, I figured out the trick to Gyro Pointer on the Switch Lite.

For some reason, it works fine up and down, but not left and right. And that’s because you have to rotate the system like a steering wheel, rather than the normal turn motion most games with gyro aiming use, which makes sense now that I think about it, because it’s imitating a pointer. And normally your controller top is pointed at the TV screen, and rotating it to point at different areas of the screen is how pointer controls would work.

That said, it still feels a little unwieldy on the Lite, but at least I can get the pointer to properly move left and right now. May just stick with normal controls and lock on for Switch Lite play, and reserve Gyro Pointer for a controller like it’s meant to be used for. But maybe this will help others trying to figure out the gyro pointer controls on a Lite or in handheld mode.

Okay, I'll admit, the gyro works better than in most games. It feels a lot faster than in Galaxy. I'm playing with a Pro Controller by the way, for Galaxy I'm using the Joy Con. Maybe the Pro has better gyro?

  • New side story starring Louie and Olimar
  • 2 new harder difficulty modes (hardest limits you to 60 instead of 100 pikmin + 'other changes')

  • New (optional) Hint system
  • Improved control options
  • 'Other QoL changes and rebalancing'

I've played it. It's good, but it's not the same without the map next to you. That was the best feature of the GamePad, and probably the only game on the Wii U that utilised it well. Having two screens side by side worked brilliantly (I played it on a monitor back in the day).

It actually controls great. Not really a fan of the Zl lock on feature or the contant tips but you can turn that off. I noticed you have a bigger circle when you whistle. Makes me wanna play pikmin 3 on Wii u again.

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

Eel

@JaxonH I figured out the wheel thing quickly, but the up and down is what doesn’t really work for me. It either goes all the way up or all the way down. Or nowhere.

As much as I love the gyro controls, I wonder why touchscreen wasn't enabled. It would've made things easier. None the matter, I really do like the motion controls and can see what @JaxonH was talking about. The whistle circle is much bigger, and the duration of the whistle lasts longer.

I also noticed at the end of the day when Alph was writing, the text box is slanted which IIRC was just straight on the screen on the Wii U version.

I'm really looking forward to playing this in a couple of weeks

The bigger whistle makes it actually more difficult to call specific Pikmin.
