What's weird and crushing is how hard you have missed the point
And that point was that No More Heroes...wouldn't randomly put an 8-bit world in its game for lulz? Because if that was the point, that's literally untrue, and if that isn't the point than you didn't make one.
Maybe you mean that No More Heroes was halfway satirical with its retro aesthetic as much as anything, a nerd with a totallynotalightsaber beating up bad guys because he wants to be cool like the media he likes and also with 8-bit nostalgia worlds because he grew up with 8-bit nostalgia worlds is its kinda point, maybe. But for all you know, that could be the point. If No More Heroes uses Shovel Knight as an awkward and forced crossover to make a point about how awkward crossovers can be and how jarring this could be, that is exactly what would happen, because Suda51.
@MarcelRguez
Reading this, I want to replay the two games again, just for the cast of characters and the classic quotes... oh, and for the music... and probably for the over the top action as well, because once you're in it, the destruction-combos, the lightsaber slicing and wrestling through hordes of killers feels damn good and never repetitive.
The games have intelligent humour and excellent voice acting as well.
I just remembered that Akira Yamaoka is on Grasshopper's payroll now. Hopefully he'll be back (and even more involved) with the soundtrack, his style really fits the series.
@kkslider5552000 The point is that you have the whole thing backwards. This isn't NMH adding "an 8-bit world in its game", it's the opposite. Suda seems to be using indie games as the setting for the levels of the game. If the mention of Unreal didn't give it away in the trailer, know that it's been confirmed that these levels are fully 3D, and not 8-bit. Whatever you were picturing in your mind with the whole "NMH goes 8-bit" doesn't look likely to happen.
Other than that, a crossover with Shovel Knight isn't jarring because of Shovel Knight's faux-8-bit aesthetics. You're mixing up two different arguments.
@SKTTR Same here. I'm planning to give Desperate Struggle a spin. It's been a while since I last played it.

ah, I see.
Though I could still see them doing something like an 8-bit style, even in 3D. Like something along the lines of 3D Dot Game Heroes or something.
For example, Shovel Knight: it's not that there's a Shovel Knight level in the game. [...] The collaborations with the indie games aren't necessarily about the levels in the game themselves, they're not exactly about the gameplay itself. [...] It's not really Travis playing these games within the game, but Travis is going to have a bunch of different t-shirts representing these indie games
Well, that clears it up a bit. He does mention that he's still meeting with these indie devs and talking about other crossover ideas that might be featured in the final game, so who knows. Sounds like it's very early in development. 2019?
What's clear is that Suda really needs to step up his marketing game.
I've never played a No More Heroes game. I did check out some gameplay of the previous games... they seem a little dated now. But this one looks fantastic. I love the idea of going into video game worlds.

God so loved the world He sent His only Son- whoever believes on Him has eternal life. Unless you believe, you will die in your sins. Whoever believes, rivers of living water flow within them. John
I haven't played the originals either, yet this still wasn't what I was expecting at all. Not that I dislike it, though: in fact, I'm really digging it so far. I can't wait for more gameplay and impressions to show up. The only thing I'm hoping for is an explorable hub world in-between the apparently linear game worlds
To be honest, I really wanted it to be a bit more similar to the previous ones, but I like what I'm seeing nonetheless. Reminds me a bit of Furi, which I love.
Suda directing another game again is reason enough for me to be excited, if anything.
Here's some direct feed gameplay from GDC. Looks pretty cool to me. Seems like a more fun, less infuriating version of Furi. Yes, it's not like the previous games in the series, but let's try and judge it on its own merits. It's not called No More Heroes 3 for a reason, you know.
Mario Galaxy is ten years old, and now I feel old.
It's worth noting that this demo was tailor-made for GDC and it's not representative of the final game. At least not in terms of difficulty.
Edit: GameXplain has uploaded a slower-paced video of that same demo. It's a bit slower-paced and less chaotic, so it's easier to see all attack animations and special powers:
Also, a thing I didn't notice before: the boss seems to have at least three phases, and this demo only showcases the first one. Notice the colors on his health bar.
Has there been any early buzz or reviews for this yet? With this being so different to the other games in the series I'd like to see what the reception is like before buying it.
