@FragRed I think the awkward announcement timing may be because of Pokemon. Last year TPC announced Pokemon Presents on the Tuesday before Pokemon Day.

Predictions:

  • Penny's Big Breakaway
  • Pocket Card Jockey
  • Level 5 titles (Fantasy Life, DecaPolice, Megatron Musashi)
  • Pentiment
  • Endless Ocean
  • A few other small and/or niche titles
  • 10 farming sims because why not

I'm gonna say there'll be nothing major here. Oh, and I'm not expecting Hi-Fi Rush here - supposedly the Switch version of that was scrapped according to Nate the Hate.

Glad they gave us a little bit extra advanced warning rather than stringing us along for another day.

@IceClimbers You forgot '10 strategic RPGs because why not'. šŸ˜

Besides Penny's which seems obvious, I have no real guesses.

Probably won't be the most exciting direct, but I'll be happy to have another game or two besides Peach to look forward to.

To be fair supporting previous hardware with ALL releases indefinitely wasn't really my point. My point was more that, in an ideal world, a game like Rayman Origins would have had the HD version available to download for Wii U. And that same version on Switch. And maybe when Switch 2 lands it's still that same HD version. But maybe on Switch 2 when you boot it up for the first time Wind Waker HD is there because you bought it on Wii U and now it runs at 4K

And sure, there would still be titles you need to upgrade the hardware for. But it seems absurd to me that some of those titles would be stuff that could have very, very easily run on Switch. I'm not talking impossible ports here or AAA games, I'm talking 2D Mario, Party games, indie games, GC remasters. There were very good reasons why it didn't happen before now but I think with this transition soloing releases on either side of the Switch/Switch 2 divide should be the exception rather than the rule

We should be glad to see the industry moving away from this and hope that Nintendo follows

Grounded and Pentiment, being games that'll run on a potato PC, are top of the list of what I'd expect from Microsoft. They're both great, and fit that mold of games that have dropped off the radar a bit since they first came out, but could have a new lease of life on Switch.

Hi-Fi Rush looks like it'd take a bit of work and they absolutely wouldn't want to compromise on the frame rate. Maybe one for PS5 and the Switch successor, whenever that arrives?

@IceClimbers For Hi-Fi Rush, they found a Switch platform exclusive shirt in the files, and a slew of outlets, including The Verge and Famitsu (which would notably be out of the loop as far as the Western rumor mill goes), have said it's coming to Switch as part of Xbox's multiplatform lineup. There's a lot more reason to think it's coming than not, even if it's not a "well, of course" game like Pentiment. I wouldn't take one leaker's word for it, even if he has a decent track record, if a number of publications are saying it's coming and if Tango's even already prepared a shirt for Switch.

Only reason they would bring back the partner showcase is if they have literally nothing else this year. Everyone still believing the random rumors about the switch 2 being delayed? Because Nintendo is about to have one hell of a bad year if that's the case.

@skywake
I see what you’re saying, I think, but here’s my crazy stance and I’m willing to go down with the ship: If people really want to play older games, there are a bazillion ways already to do so, the main one being just booting up your old console to play it. Sometimes I get the itch to play Wind Waker HD, and I overcome my laziness and plug in a few cords of my Wii U to do it.

I know that smoothing things out and making them available everywhere is convenient, but I’m of the mindset that our quest for convenience is going to destroy our ability to actually own anything, which would suck beyond sucking. Not worth the convenience, in my eyes, if I have ā€œaccessā€ to all of my games, but that access is not real ownership and disappears when I don’t have an internet connection, when Disn- I mean Nintendo- inexplicably decides they’re ending support for certain titles, when servers get hacked and recovery is a long time coming if ever, … the list goes on without even delving into Nintendo’s persistent online quirks and eShop disappearances and deletions and discontinuation on two very successful consoles.

I love gaming. Make quality games. Put them on cartridges for me to buy and put in my console, share with friends, and even sell one day… whatever I want to do with it, whenever I want to because it's mine. I have it in my hands. And if that means I need to buy a new console every seven years and hook up an old one from time to time, that's fine if it means I retain all ownership.

Sorry, ranted lol

What I posted on the main page:

Welp, I can honestly say this is the least hyped I've ever been for a nintendo direct. Hope to be proven wrong about my thoughts on this one. Just not expecting anything of substance. Hi fi would be sweet but I already beat it last year. We'll see what surprises we have in store. Good luck boys and gals.

TheBigBlue

@NintendoByNature Well the reason Nintendo is putting out a partner direct is because they don’t have anything of substance they want to show at the moment. There should be at least one killer announcement in there though, there always is, like the persona announcement last time

I think there will be at least one first party announcement in the form of something releasing on NSO courtesy of RARE/MS. I'm predicting we might get Diddy Kong Racing or Banjo Tooie on the N64 app on NSO and maybe a 60 second highlight of what's next on the service. Aside from that I highly doubt there will be any other first party announcements.

I just want Xenogears remakes. All so I can actually play Takahashi's earlier works.

Well they should at least have a Pokemon game for the holiday season, which should be announced in 8 days. Beyond that though, yeah, if they don't have anything to announce first party is looking awfully dry from March to November.

Nintendo not having anything of substance to show is the entire problem. After Princess Peach Showtime in March, what do they have for this year that we know about? 2 remakes/remasters. That's it. As I said, we'll probably get a Pokemon game announced at a Pokemon Presents in 8 days, but beyond that what's coming this year? Do they really just have those 3 games for the last 9 months? That's a pretty dry release schedule.

The rumours about Switch 2 delay already made Nintendo's stock prices go down.

But clearly they don't have nothing more this year... this wouldn't be the first year we worry about a sparse release schedule early in the year and then get a ton dropped on us later in the year.

@Bolt_Strike I still think there are a few first party things that are coming this year that we don't know about yet. I'm guessing we'll get Metroid Prime Remasters 2/3 on Switch before the end of October, probably a couple smaller releases later in the year "could be the rumoured Zelda Oracle Remakes" alongside Pokemon Let's Go Gen 2 or Pokemon Gen 5 Remakes "One or the other, NOT both." in November, and Metroid Prime 4 as a cross-gen release across Switch and its successor.

@FishyS Well I wouldn't say that much. Often times when we come out of the Spring with little to no news, it means there's little to nothing the whole year. They don't usually save big, AAA blockbusters releasing in the holiday for a Summer or Fall Direct, especially not in the post E3 era (but then with the Switch 2 rumors I think few of us expect those kinds of games until the console is actually announced). I think they could have a few more surprises up their sleeves, but it might be small surprises they reveal through a social media drop or something, like more remakes/remaster or a smaller title for a lesser IP that probably isn't going to sell super well. I do think we're going without a mainline Direct for a while, possibly until Fall, maybe even until next Spring, when hopefully they're actually ready to tell us about the Switch 2.
