@jump Indeed, it's always funny how many people are surprised that Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are always working on the next console. I think I read in a tweet by Daniel Ahmad during the annual financial report for Nintendo that their R&D spending has ramped up the past year. That could be because a Pro Switch is in development but it is still interesting to note.

@FragRed Yeah, their budget R&D numbers are about 10% up on last year, they seemed to have contra it against the marketing spend so their expenditure is about the same if I remember it correctly.
I'm not sure on their exact method of accounting (it should be noted in the audited accounts but I can't bothered to find it) but I would have guessed R&D also includes induvial game development.
@jump That's something I never knew so thank you for that insight. I assume some of the costs in R&D would also be shared with Nvidia, assuming they are working on the next console too. I didn't think game development would be R&D so that is certainly interesting, though Breath of the Wild 2 I imagine must need a big budget like the first one and I assume Metroid Prime 4 now being with Retro would ramp up the costs too. It's interesting how different businesses account for costs differently.

@FragRed Just think of it as the game is a product which requires R&D to create and the actual cost of sales is stuff like making the boxes and discs etc. Of course I could be wrong and I should actually check their companies house for their accounting methods in case they are using something life cycle costing but then their R&D shouldn't be that high if it was and it would make it harder to budget and release.
The R&D for Metroid Prime 4 might have actually gone done since it's being done internally/by Retro as Bandai would have been charging them something for it. Even if the game development was carried out by a third party it will still be classed as R&D, outside consultants and specialists are common in the R&D stage for non-game companies at least. It would also depend of the consolidation and intercompany accounting. If Retro are wholly owned by Nintendo then Retros number are just worked up to Nintendo, if partly owned then development costs, revenue etc are alot trickier as they are often manipulated such as with transfer pricing which is internal selling/buying as the value is just made up since it's not affected by actual market price.
@mariomaster96 That makes most sense as they did say it was to be a series. Again this is why believing in leakers is never going to end well, I don’t care what so called track record they have.

In the UK at least I think you would struggle to classify game development as R&D, i'd imagine game development would be capital expenditure, new console development would be a combination of R&D and Capex.
@Anti-Matter I doubt buy that completely, the last Direct in Sep months before Coivd and it's not impossible to put together a Direct whilst this is happening. For example in response to San Diego Comic-Con (the E3 of comic and other geeks stuff) being cancelled DC comics have put together a 24 hour interactive web event this weekend to make up for it.
Yes, of course, but in the UK you can claim tax credits if your R&D:-
looked for an advance in science and technology
had to overcome uncertainty
tried to overcome this uncertainty
could not be easily worked out by a professional in the field
I don't think you could classify any game develop under this criteria.
Not sure how it works in Japan, but I thought these types of tax schemes were common.
If you take 28, divide that by 7 days in a week, you get 4. My prediction is a partner showcase featuring 4 games. It will be 4 minutes long and they'll go more in depth on bakugan, approximately 4 min long. Leaving 4 seconds for 3 other games.
Hmmm well other people have said 28th as well, and Jeff Grubb has a pretty good record at this point, so I'm gonna assume this is true and get overhyped to the max.
@Dezzy well but he also said that he doesnt know what kind of presentation it is and therefore it could also be a partner showcase. don't get me wrong, i dont want to kill your hype, but it would be smarter to keep the expectation low and then be positive suprised if it turns out to be a general direct than to have high expectation and then be dissapointed cause it is only a partner showcase (or no direct at all)
