Topic: Minecraft Dungeons Character Allocation Help Please

Hi, hoping you can help me......

We play as a family on the Switch. We save to an SD card and do not have an online Nintendo account.

When we play, we select one user (always the same one). We then add 'local players' as 'guests'. Each of us always uses the same character we have created as a 'local playing guest'.

Problem is that when one of us wants to play alone without the 'main user' we always select to play as a family, we can't access our saved character that we normally play as and it makes us start again.

Surely we can allocate our saved characters to our own respective user accounts? I just have no idea how to do this. Can anyone please give me some step-by-step instructions.

Thanks!

@Battenobbs I think I understand what is giving you a problem or blocking access. Let me outline how game ownership & game save data are structured.

  • Game ownership is tied to the switch user/nintendo account that purchased the game. Ownership is not shared or transferrable to another switch user or nintendo account.
  • One user/nintendo account owns the game. Other switch users on your console are allowed to access & play the game, but they don't own it.
  • Game save data of each switch user is not shared or transferrable to another switch user, or Nintendo account.

Most of us would agree it's a bit restrictive for a family console, but that's how game ownership & game save data are structured with the Switch system. These structures are designed to prevent piracy. (still agree it's a bit restrictive in some respects)

Let me know if that answers your question. If it doesn't, that info may help you reframe the question. (or maybe I need to see same question twice to get on the same page. If that's the case forgive me. Discussing multiple nintendo accounts or switch users can get a little complicated.)

@Battenobbs Another possibility; Is your Nintendo Switch Online subscription for one user? The other switch user would also need an NSO subscription to acess playing online.

If you're going to have 2 or more users subscribe to NSO, family plan is the cheaper way to go.

Also, Nintendo lets you upgrade to a family plan. On eshop, when you go to buy the family plan it will show full price but, at the final step before you make the purchase, Nintendo will show you the discounted/upgrad cost to upgrade to the family plan, which should be a discounted upgrade cost depending on how many months of your current subscription is left.

Thanks....I think that answers! But just to be sure.....
When we purchased the game for my son, he started playing on his user account.
We (other son and parents) then joined his game. He pressed the - key and then we held down the L stick to join. We have now played like this for quite a while.
I would like to take the character I have built up and allocate it to my switch user account. This is so that when I want to play, I can use my character rather than having to start over. At the moment the only way I can get my character is to start the game on my sons user account and then add myself using the - button and hold the L stick. Problem is that I then have 2 characters on screen and I only need one of them.....I cant close down the sons as he is the main character.
Not sure if that is any clearer? Thanks.

@Battenobbs I know @Eel and family members play minecraft on their switch, maybe he can answer better than I. I could see the answer going two ways and, I don't want to muddy the waters. (It's morning where Eel is)

I think there's a chance Mincraft may have a way to do what you want. Not all games do.

You can also try asking minecraft support on their official website. Your question falls outside of Nintndo's umbrella, so I wouln't ask Nintendo, since this situation depends on how the Mincraft game and servers are structured.

Sorry, I've never played Minecraft Dungeons. It's a different game based on Minecraft.

I stumbled upon this thread while hunting for similar info, and I might be able to help. It seems like you're facing some challenges with allocating saved characters to your own switch user account in Minecraft. From what I understand, game ownership and saved data are tied to the user who purchased the game, and they're not transferable. So, unfortunately, it's not straightforward to have your character on your own account. However, I recently discovered a cool way to play Minecraft for free in your browser at minecraftforfreex.com. It's a fun alternative if you're looking for more Minecraft adventures. Apologies for reviving an older thread, and thanks for sharing your experience here.
