@19Robb92 Great comparison. That actually makes me more enthusiastic, as the Spyro games were some of my favorite early platformers!

@Ralizah
Yeah, same here. I love the Spyro trilogy on Ps1, I think I still have them somewhere in the house.

Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again

@BLP_Software I get what you mean. The comparatively free-flowing supply of moons doesn't break the game up into the same satisfyingly structured chunks as many of its predecessors. I'm thinking of changing my play rhythm and general 'approach' the game in order to accept (and enjoy) the game for what it is.

My natural tendency is to explore everything and leave no stone unturned - and in a sense it's a perfect game for that - but overindulging my slightly obsessive explorative habits does undermine the sense of moving 'forward' through the adventure. If I do it too much, it just feels like I'm meandering, and because I invariably return to the ship with a surplus of Power Moons anyway, I don't really feel like I need them, which defeats the whole point of the reward/progression system to which the moons are central.

So yeah, I get where you're coming from. By playing the game a bit more linearly and treating extra moons as pleasant surprises instead of mandatory tasks (and possibly also by playing in smaller dose), I'm hoping to avoid/reduce that feeling of the moons all blurring into one. I'll report back with how it goes! Currently though, I'm not willing to assert whether it's an inherent flaw with the game, or a mismatched case of approach and expectations.

There does seem to be an awful lot of wonderful game design in Odyssey. I'm just so caught up in trying to compherensovdly take in everything in front of me that I can't focus on and appreciate each piece in its own right.

@Ryu_Niiyama I feel like we've suddenly become the bad kids sniggering at the back of the class. What naughty yams we are!

I love the little leaflets for each kingdom. Cascade Kingdom's leaflet mentions a stone pillar which is described as some kind of natural miracle and Mario goes and knocks it over when he gets the first moon.

Purple coins are a bit like blue coins, except there are more of them. How do people feel about those since everyone hated the blue coins?

So can someone give me a spoiler tagged list of all the kingdoms? I don't consider that a spoiler at all. I like to know such things ahead of time.

@Inertiacreep I very highly doubt Xeno 2 will be a better game then Mario Odyssey or BOTW. Not everyone is a massive JRPG fan despite what the fanbase seems to believe.

I think the fanbase is fully aware of that. Final Fantasy and Pokemon have always been the only JRPG series that sells big numbers. And Dragon Quest in Japan only.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

@Octane People didn't like blue coins because the main collectible (and thus 100%) was locked behind them (not to mention the unfortunate implications of foreign tanukis holding the island's lifeblood for money). Kingdom coins just unlock costumes and stickers. And if it ever transpires you need one of those for a moon, you only need a few.

Alone, a force. Together, a force of nature.

@Octane Super Mario Odyssey needs levels similar to Sunshine's pachinko machine and The Watermelon Festival.

My first first four hours with the game - it's good ! My only criticism is the kingdoms seem a bit on the smaller side so I feel like I'm going through it quickly - still amazing so far though !

Octane

@Dezzy Sure, but why though? However, Odyssey is fairly heavy on the story side, and seeing all the kingdom ahead of time can spoil some moments of the game.

Cap Kingdom
Cascade Kingdom
Sand Kingdom
Lake Kingdom/Wooded Kingdom
Cloud Kingdom
Lost Kingdom
Metro Kingdom
Snow Kingdom/Seaside Kingdom
Luncheon Kingdom
Ruined Kingdom
Bowser's Kingdom
Moon Kingdom

Wow. This game. The game needs time to really see how it holds up, just as BOTW lost its sparkle to many fans after the dust settled, but 3 (4) kingdoms in and it's already feeling better than Sunshine for me.

The controls are a huge strong point for this game. They are a bit awkward at first, and the wall jump could use a little more oomph, but the skill cap seems unprecedentedly high. You can chain these wild combos where a slight change in momentum could make all the difference. I've also already reached several "blocked" areas. There are so many opportunities to grab moons the "wrong" way, and I am having a blast doing it.

Not as heavy spoilers as above, ha ha.

One of my favorite moments is when I collected enough moons to power up the Odyssey, I just skipped the main objective! The airship just flies off and I'm like, "Oh, alright then!" I assume you can still go back and complete it, though.

Also, that's interesting that A) the number of moons varies for each kingdom, and B) the triple moon just counts for one slot on the moon checklist. Neat! That's (at least) 2 more moons per area than I originally thought!

The motion controls are a pain, with the pro controler I basically need to fling it with one hand. Never was a issue till that God dam poison ink boss. Besides that one fight I'm loving it.

I absolutely love the big expanses in the game. Its the first time in many years I'm reminded of Mario 64 style gameplay

Playing my copy now. Just completed the frozen desert level. I like it. Mario controls really fluidly. The level design is imaginative. The music, while not up to the standards of Galaxy (what is?), is still quite nice. The game really is utterly gorgeous on the TV, but unlike what some magazines were reporting, it also looks and plays well on the tablet.

Not really a fan of the motion controls. For some reason the the spinning hat attack doesn't work well for me. Assigning the hat throw to a basic waggle of the right joycon works well enough, though, and reminds me favorably of Mario Galaxy and the spin attack. Also like how wiggling the joycon after throwing can make the hat target enemies.

It doesn't have the overpowering "Wow!" factor of Breath of the Wild, but it's definitely impressive for a Mario platformer so far.

Finally bought it!
In case anyone didn't know, you can get the game on the South African eshop for about 41€. You just need a credit card (and a South African MyNintendo account of course - or temporarily change your account's location in your profile).

Also do other people also think that they showed off way too much ahead of time ? As much as I'm enjoying it, everything has looked pretty familiar to me - of course there has been SMALL surprises but most kingdoms/captures we saw footage of ahead of time and a lot of moons were shown ahead of time, so it gets rid of the fun of solving them

Just spent like 45 minutes looking around for that Amiibo-vacuum robot. And where was it? Right next to the Odyssey! I picked up a bunch of moons during my search so all‘s swell that ends well.

I'm thinking that too in part. Mario games were never my favorite and they were always quick to beat, but I expect this will end up as another fun Mario game unless it becomes repetitive. So far I'm not getting fatigued playing through the first areas in the way I did with Breath. It's a smaller, quicker, and more rewarding game. To me that means better, but I can't speak for everyone who's easily amused by large maps.

I've already collected 100 moons (half of them from the desert level) and they feel more like Mario secrets than Korok seeds. It probably helps that you don't have to fight a physics system for 10 minutes to complete the same exact objective you recognized the second you spotted the rock pattern, metal block, etc. Tostarena feels more like a classic Zelda town than Skyloft or anything in Breath. It's just so dense and there's actual meaningful exploration of unique areas, not overly elaborate archways and 10s of houses and big fields of crops that amount to nothing.

I do have a question for the thread: Is there anyway to rewind to the night time episodes in a kingdom or is it just permanently day from then on?

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

Haruki_NLI

So 5 kingdoms down, near 200 moons.

Missing 6 coins in Sand Kingdom I cant for the life of me find.

And gotta say...5 kingdoms in now and er...yeah its not getting any better. At all. Im enjoying the smaller kingdoms the most by far due to how compacted everything is.

But these moons...man. its just busy work. And these bosses...yep. pretty basic stuff.
