I'm testing Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube) right now and the frame rate of the Switch port is much smoother so it's not just the Super Mario 64 port that is smoother but also Sunshine 😁.
@JaxonH I think they’ll go with the 2 button approach with a button being half press and the other being full. Id personally prefer it that way anyway.
We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.
@1UP_MARIO I have played it on GameCube and on Wii U (via Nintendont) with the GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U (and a GameCube controller) so it's basically as playing it on Gamecube natively but through HDMI. I also think that they will use two buttons for shooting. Something like this:
Switch R: map
Switch ZR: full-speed shooting that locks Mario's movement
Switch L: ground pound / centre camera
Switch ZL: mid-speed shooting that allows Mario to move
EDIT: Super Mario Sunshine has never supported wide-screen officially.
@BlueOcean I agree. It's a total lack of any fan service compared to what Sega has done with their retro library with the help of M2.
M2 had to back engineer some of the games because Sega didn't have the source code anymore. Then they solved bugs that weren't even discovered yet (outrun), then they tweaked the original engines to not only make them wide-screen, but to run them in 3D on the 3DS. And guys game size doesn't matter, the only thing you have to look into is the engine, and once tweaked play test it.
Anyway I'm over it now. I'm very happy Sunshine gets a second chance because it's very good.
And I'll be happy if this experiment brings us more single GC ports on the eshop (AHEMFZEROGXCOFF COFF...)
@teo_o Right, I'll play the collection but it seems to be a very lazy effort. M2 did an amazing job. I read an interview about Streets of Rage II and it was impressive. Grezzo and Tantalus did great on 3DS and Wii U, they reworked the textures and models and added subtle graphical improvements. Super Mario 3D All-Stars doesn't even have wide-screen Super Mario 64.
I think that they'll add Nintendo 64 to Nintendo Switch Online next year and probably GameCube and Wii games to the eShop. That would explain why this collection will disappear from the eShop soon.
@BlueOcean i'm completly clueless about what Grezzo's or Tantalus's works must have cost in terms of money and time but one thing i know for sure: they were not done at a loss.
Honestly i also understand keeping the fans happy isn't an easy task. Take the ports of Doom and Doom2: they had huge issues that any real fan was able to spot and were heavy criticized for it, but over time they improved the ports, and they are still receiving updates. We'll see if FF Crystal Chronicles will get a similar treatment or not. Sadly i know nintendo too well to expect any update or improvement post launch on any of these ports.
Of course i'll be glad if proven wrong.
@teo_o Nintendo have earned much more money than whatever they paid Grezzo or Tantalus. It's also a question of prestige, they are flagship games and whenever a better version is available that only benefits Nintendo because they own the copyright. Unfortunately, Nintendo often disappoints and can't get things right but I'll be absolutely happy if these ports are more improved than we think. The trailer showed little.
This collection isn’t terrible. I own a modded Wii U. It’s not about gaining access to the games, it’s about gaining hybrid handheld versions. It’s definitely a bare-bones collection, but the games are so good, and look so good in HD, that the collection stands on its own merits just based on the quality of the included games. That said, there are improvements like the texture of Mario’s hat letter, among other things analysis videos have found.
Even so, as a collection, it’s skimp. But as a whole, all things considered, it’s probably one of the best releases I’ve seen all generation. Having said that, I would have loved a version of Mario 64 that looks like the PC port. But I would expect that to be a full price separate release, if they ever made it.

@LetsaGO pretty much. or take me: i own the originals and i had fun playing and tweaking around with them on dolphin. But i don't want to be a total jerk here: what we can enjoy as fans through open source emulation is the result of hours of someone elses work we don't even see, so we tend to be kind of spoiled on the subject. And i can't even be mad at nintendo for failing a generation with the WiiU (although again: i would like to see the numbers in detail, because i'm convinced it wasn't a loss for them in terms of games sold), so i understand all the DELUXE ports...but man, this entire holiday lineup is made of ports. From someone who told us that having only one console on the market has the advantage of not splitting dev works on two consoles, i expected more.
But i look at the bright side: maybe there's a ton of content ready for the launch of a slightly more powerful console revision. I hate the fact that N3DS had exclusive titles, but it's not unheard of nintendo to keep the core name brand and upgrade the hardware. Like Gameboy and Gameboy advance, or DS and 3DS.
What I don’t get is this: everyone wanted the rumours to be right and they all hoped for it. And when Nintendo revealed the exact same thing the rumours said and more everyone is disappointed. Why? It’s like wanting a Switch for your birthday, getting one and getting mad about it.
@BabyYoshi12
Not everyone is disappointed. There’s a lot of people really excited for this, I assure you.
The leaks told us beforehand that the games were basically just going to be HD ports, so we knew what to expect. At least, I know I did. And frankly, that’s ideal for at least 2 of the 3 games, because Sunshine and Galaxy are modern enough that, simply rendering in HD makes them look similar to modern games on Switch.
People are just moody because Nintendo hasn’t revealed a big, new holiday title, and it feels like, despite this being a fantastic addition to the Switch library, it’s all they have for the rest of the year, barring Pikmin 3. And... I understand that sentiment. They are definitely leaning into the ports this H2. But, I think when you take a step back and look at the bigger picture, you realize leaning into ports (good ones, mind you) for 6 months given this whole C19 thing, isn’t the worst thing in the world. 2021 is a new year. We have SMTV, Trails of Cold Steel 4, YS 9, Monster Hunter, Zelda BotW 2, Bayonetta 3, Pokemon Snap, Bravely Default 2, and countless other unknown titles on the way. So I think it’s best to just go with the flow and enjoy whatever comes.

@OorWullie Thanks for the file size reply, I didn't have all the info when that thought crossed my mind. And I probably shouldn't have posted it right before leaving town for a couple of days, I'm 20 PAGES of comments behind. 😂
