Thinking about it a bit more I think they'll have some sort of unified system that allows games to be played on both portable and non-portable. And because of that if I was them I'd just call it the "Nintendo" and the "Nintendo Portable". Then that'd be the last branding ever for their portables and home consoles. Their next versions would just be revisions ontop of that that you'd just walk into the shop and get. Not unlike the iPhone or iPad.

Nintendooms(Nintendo Doomination System — heroes not allowed)
WTrion(as in "Wii the third but with an actually cool name")
Thunder Drive

and the list can go on forever, I consider myself pretty good at making up names

(Assume Nintendo prefix before the name)
HyperDrive
Leap
Loop
Symphony
GameCore
HyperCore
Thunderbird ( I hope there's no copyright infringement on this one because it sounds awesome to me. I mean there's Ford Thunderbird, Mozilla Thunderbird and Thunderbirds, the film and tv series).
Actually lets just call it "NINTENDO"
here comes the science part.....
People say "im using the laptop" they dont say im using an Dell x3r2p.
People say im " listening to my IPOD" they don't say listening to my 3rd gen Nano...
Keep it simple and now we all use virtual console to play NES, SNES games etc as well as new titles its makes perfect sense!
Funny thing is the code names turn out better then the official names.
If the WiiU was called Nintendo Café and was brown with a cup of coffee as the logo, it probably would be outselling the xbone!
Add bacon and you outsell the PS4 lmao!
Nintendo X or NX is already a decent name.
If it's a hybrid it still works with the "X" meaning "Cross" instead of an X-Word
Mobile could be something new age like Nintendo Go (NGO)... Nintengo!!! LMAO
WiiX (Wix) would be a deaprite attempt to keep the Wii name... better then WiiU though... WiiN!!! lol
Or the ultimate nintendo troll of all time....
drumroll please...

Nintendo Play Box! (NPB)
I think we have a winner!
I think the Nintendo NX sounds really cool, or maybe it could be called the Nintendo X. I doubt they'll use those names though, because there's already an Xbox. I can't really think of a great name for Nintendo's next console. The next DS will probably be the HDS, unless they decide to drop the dual-screens. But I don't see why they would.
As others have pointed out, Nintendo's code names haven't really translated to the retail names. But I'm betting that changes with the NX, which is released as "the Nintendo conNX" (pronounced "connects"). From what I can gather, that is goal #1 for the new console, to somehow enable a whole bunch of devices to play the same game. So there you have, the conNX
I'm sure the "New 3DS" sounds more interesting in the Japanese language, where they have a different word for "new."
Japanese people say "New 3DS" as well, just in a Japanese accent. "Nyuu Nintendou Surii Dii Esu."
No, you misunderstand. What I mean is that to the Japanese, the English word "New" is a more or less foreign word. Therefore, in conversation, the Japanese won't mix up the [japanese word for new] 3DS (that may or may not still be new to them) from the brand name "New 3DS." Plus, it probably sounds cooler to them, because it's English, and not just another lame name.
In short, they are indeed calling it "New 3DS" just like us, but those words are English to them and therefore foreign.
