I've recently been interested in getting the old version of minecraft. I have the ps3 version but I'd like to have the switch version for the portability and just being able to play it anywhere. I'm aware that it's delisted, I'm just wondering is there's a legitimate way to get it
I'm not 100% certain, but I think older physical copies of Minecraft have the legacy version to play, but it will constantly prompt you to download the bedrock version when you attempt to launch the game.
I would have to check my physical copy to be sure.
Where as newer physical copies of Minecraft are just the bedrock version from the get go.
Well I remember getting that 1st box in summer of 2018 I think and I remember getting home, booting it up and realizing it was the pocket edition rather than what it was like on the wii u edition I have. I'm not sure if there was an option for the legacy version
The question then is, did you opt to update before you played that physical copy? The idea being the legacy version is there...as long as you do not opt to update to the most recent version. The bedrock update went live June 21st, 2018.
I can check my copy when I get home for work if you no longer have a physical copy.
Edit: Although it appears the release date for the 1st boxed version was...June 21st 2018, lol.
Apologies for the late response on this. But I finally took the time to have a look at the older cartridge. I deleted updates and found that the cartridge won't launch without the updates, downloads are mandatory. Which is unfortunate, I had hoped it was playable without updates, but alas. But on the flip side, that means that this is one more game for the trade pile, so thanks for helping me discover that.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,473 games (as of July 4th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 2 games (as of June 9th, 2025)
@Magician Actually, if you reset your Switch to factory settings, the cartridge is playable again without any of its previous updates.
The Switch OS is remembering the last update of the game, even if you do not have any save file on the newer version.
I found about that "workaround" and unfortunately the saves of my games were gone after that I know it is a stupid thing but hey, the cartridges are not useless Except for Bloodstained Ritual of the Night where you need a linked Nintendo account to start it
@Zuljaras So even if I “Initilize console without deleting save data” which I did that. It won’t find legacy. Why is it that when I first put it in it booted as Nintendo Switch Edition and now It won’t? And why does every other game downgrade to 1.0 but Minecraft refuses to??
