@Yannis ha, fair enough. And it’s not travel really that mean my Switch is showing it’s age. It has a couple of scratches from going in and out of the dock and has generally had lots of love and heavy use from myself and now my son too.

Jack Frost is in the profile picture. The outfit is from another character from the same series (Raidou Kuzonoha, I like the 1920s vibe). He is / was the Shin Megami Tensei mascot character. Before the Persona ones got more spotlight.

I like yours too. Where’s that from?

@JoeDiddley These kind of scratches were inevitable for me too. I thought about installing some kind of protective sleeve inside the dock to prevent that, but then again i thought maybe i'm stressing over something trivial. Oh i see, i asked about it because it looks so cool and yeah SMT and Persona are one of those series i haven't touched yet, but really want to..Mine's from a game called "Hatsune Miku: Project Diva". It's a rhythm game where you hit the music notes in accordance with the song. The song that depicts the specific character is "Close and Open, Demons and The Dead".

@Yannis often people who like SMT also like Danganronpa so you might like it. Although different gameplay and aesthetic, so I can’t give an obvious reason for this from the top of my head. Persona 4 and Danganronpa being on Vita maybe.

Aah Hatsune Miku is a series that’s long been on my wishlist too. Also the developers worked on the Persona Dancing games.

Do you have a Steam Deck?

@TheBigBlue for me it’s cheaper than a potato laptop but able to play higher end games - great value. And I play mostly in the house but whilst the family utilise the TV. Perfect for me, but that’s probably not most people’s circumstances.

I do have the option to take it out of the house but I have a Switch, Vita, 3DS etc - I haven’t yet.

@TheBigBlue
while i havent got a steam deck the main reason i usually play handheld on something is more the option of playing something "off-tv" in a way which i feel is more comfortable to use than a laptop or mobile device due to having the controls on the device while still being able to play it on a screen you can hold in your hands.

its one of the reasons why i spend the vast majority of time on wiiu playing games via the gamepad itself and why i wish that ps5 had a more dedicated device for remote play.

@Mgalens It was called the Vita or PSP handheld. Sony did a good job killing those two devices themselves and only Sony is to blame for Sony.

@SwitchForce The PSP wasn't really killed off. It just wasn't as popular as the Nintendo DS. It still outsold the Nintendo 3DS.

Sony never really had the will to support the Vita, unfortunately, and just sort of left it out to die after the first sign of trouble.

Thought I posted on here before...or a while back...meh, whatever.

Anyways yeah, I also own this so-called "Switch killer". It's, alright, but that's about it, alright. It's heavy, the touch/trackpads are a pain in the ass to work with, the whole perfect emulator system thing is bs as well.

I also bought this thing to play on the TV without having to deal with the whole dual-monitor/screen setup headache. It has audio issues, no matter what dock you use, even the overly expensive official one, audio just randomly cuts out for a few seconds all the time. Also, if your wireless controller disconnects for any reason, the game soft-locks...so if you haven't saved in a while, goodbye progress.

Yeah, I've been using this thing less and less and I still prefer the Switch.

@SwitchForce
I think psp had limited remote play with ps3 but not ps4, psvita did have full remote play with ps4 but sadly not ps5.

i still end up playing my vita quite a bit even if it is mainly for the psone games and things like trails of cold steel. (i still consider it my favorite way to play FFVII-IX)

I would love to see the vita get a successor since having another dedicated handheld option is always nice imo. (hopefully not using some expensive memory cards)

@JoeDiddley Yeah i figure i might like SMT since i've played several jrpg's and turn-based games and had a great time, definitely in my list along with Persona. I think Danganrompa and Persona games go waaay back to the psp era, how cool is that!? Only if i knew earlier, because i had a psp as well. Also the miku game goes on sale quite often, i highly urge you to give it a go if you like rhythm games, it's such addictive fun! Steam deck i don't have (my backlog will hate me if i buy another console xD) but yeah it's the battery and size that put me off from getting one...if valve makes a smaller revision with better battery life i may reconsider. Although some other window's handhelds i seen like Odin mini pro look quite appealing ngl and the price is decent.
*sry for late reply, i log in from my work pc .-.

@nomither6 In terms of hardware? Yeah the switch specs are ancient relics at this point, but still offer reasonable performance in most first party games. Speaking of games the deck has a vast library of games considerably larger than the switch, but the exclusives can only be played on the latter. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference and what someone deems more important i think.

@Yannis I certainly want to give Miku a go. I love rhythm games but I’m not very good at them, and that probably gets even worse with age. I played more around Ouendan on the DS.

It is exciting that the technology is coming on fast in the Odin / SD space and should improve costs, battery and form factor.

@JoeDiddley That's fine. I sucked a lot when i started, but then i went with the lowest difficulty and now i can proudly declare i can handle "Normal" XD
Yep i could definitely see myself getting such a handheld on a whim down the road.

I have both Switch and Steam Deck. But, our main gaming system is Steam on PC. I have 2 absurd, expensive and perfect Desktops. Side by side. That's how my wife and I like to play the most: on wonderful monitors and perfect Desktops. We play together games like Gears 5, Forza Horizon 5, Soulcalibur VI (and hundreds of other games) each on its own screen. It's absolutely seamless and immersive. We each use Logitech headsets and extract the best in quality.

That said, we see the Switch and Steam Deck as follows.

**What Switch is better than Steam Deck**

  • Motion controls. Our daughter can play with assisted steering in Mario Kart, on the wheel-shaped controller. We also enjoy playing Just Dance as a family. We have an accessory that holds the Joycom in our arms and is perfect for doing difficult Just Dance routines. We subscribe to Just Dance Unlimited and the Switch is the perfect system for this situation.
  • Switch is lighter than Steam Deck. Even so, I find both heavy and both tire me if I play lying in bed for too long.

**What Steam Deck is better than Switch**

  • 95% of all Switch games are also available on the Steam Store. But on the Steam Store they are MUCH cheaper. When the Steam Store is on sale, you buy games for $1, $3. In my country, The Witcher 3 (complete with all DLC) was for the equivalent of $4 last week.
  • The Steam Store library is gigantic. It has a lot more games than the Switch. Games are not lost from generation to generation. Everything you've ever bought in the last 20 years is available for you to play forever, on PC, Steam Deck, TV, iphone, ipad, any device you can play a game on Steam.
  • Online is free. There are a lot more people playing on Steam. You can find matches online even in the less popular games.
  • On Steam you can see players and friends who are online, but are NOT playing. You can communicate with them and invite them to play any game, even games that only you have and he doesn't. You send him a link and he plays with you, even if he doesn't have the game. On Switch, you can only see friends who are ALREADY playing a game. This is useless, because you cannot communicate with them, nor invite them to play, and since they are already playing a game, they would hardly leave this game to play another game with you. It's very bureaucratic to arrange an online match. Requires Discord, it's too complicated. I have 50 friends and I managed to play online a few times. On Steam, it's every day, any time. There's always someone to play with. Not just the main games. Any game. Thousands of games.
  • You can send a Remote Play Together link from Steam Deck to an Ipad Pro, for example. Thus, you transform the Ipad Pro into a second Steam Deck and you can play with your friends. Also Iphone, Android, notebook, TV with android, etc.
  • Your Steam Deck also syncs with your Desktop or Notebook running Steam, making it a network for multiple players to play together at home or over the network.
  • You're on the street, and your friend has NO PC, no Steam Deck and no games you play. I can get the Steam Deck, send them a link, and play a Street Fighter V with them. Me through Steam Deck and them through their phone or TV, using a bluetooth controller (like Xbox series s or playstation 5). For free.
  • Steam Deck does not need a Dock to connect to the TV. For it not to run out of battery, you just need an adapter that costs $9 on Amazon. So you plug it into the TV and charge it at the same time. That simple.

**What Steam deck and Switch are equal to**

  • Portability. Both require a case. Both don't fit the pocket. Both will be carried in a backpack. At this point, both are the same, regardless of the Steam deck being slightly larger.
  • Battery. On Steam Deck, you can lower the video quality to Switch-like quality and have the same battery life result. But on Steam Deck you have more choice of games and free online. Even so, strictly speaking of battery, they are very similar when compared in quality, and also in games that both have. Of course, there are less optimized games, like The Last of US, recently released for Steam, which consume more battery. But, until then, this game doesn't even have the Switch...just having it is a plus. If I run Zelda on Steam Deck, the battery will last the same as on Steam for the same quality.
  • Since I'm afraid of planes, I played Switch on planes. Today I play Steam Deck on the plane. On both Switch and Steam Deck, I take Powerbanks to recharge the battery. Because both devices do not have autonomy for a complete flight that I do. So both are equal in that sense as well.

I don´t like single player games very much. So, i don´t play Pokemon, Zelda, Pikmin, Xenogears (and any other RPG), Mario 3d, Kirby, Yoshi, Toad, metroid. I don´t like these games.

From Nintendo i like Warioware, Mario Kart, F-zero, Advance Wars (GBA, NDS), Fire Emblem (
just for the strategy. I skip all the dialogues and I don't care about the story), Smash Bros. All of them I can play on Steam Deck.

Me and my wife game time:

  • 80% Steam (Desktop...I play 2,3,4 hours everyday)
  • 10% Steam Deck (i play on plane and when i travel to my mother in law house, work, ...)
  • 10% Switch (i play 1 or 2 hours/week, my wife play more)

I mean, for techies that love to fiddle with their hardware to get the most out of it, Steam Deck is a sure fire bet. For people who don't want to mess with any of them, Nintendo Switch is a good option, though the graphical ability difference is also very noteworthy. I don't have a Steam Deck, but I have tried one and know people who do, and they love it. It really just depends on what someone wants out of a system.

I got a steam deck in the recent sale and have found it really enjoyable so far for playing my PC game collection from when I last had a proper gaming PC (10 years ago!). I have always loved handhelds, and I get way more opportunities to play on dedicated handhelds than waiting for the TV to be available in our house!

Having said that, it is really noticeable that the weight, size, screen, and overall ease of use are far inferior to the switch. I have the OLED model and it is a much nicer piece of hardware than the steam deck.

My plan is to keep the switch going as my main console, but using the steam deck to play old favourites (UT 2004, Race 07 etc). Emulation is also fun on the steam deck... I've given up waiting for Nintendo to add GameCube to the NSO service!!

for me ive really wanted to get a steam deck but am not really a fan of tinkering with settings on games.

its less a complexity thing and more an obsessive compulsive thing, as in the straight up on-the-spectrum anxiety inducing kind of obsessive compulsive, i look on things like the subreddit and various game compatibility list and see people talking about protons and other such things.

The idea of being able to play third party games with better performance (or some games which never got a switch port) is really appealing to me but some of the more "PC" aspects of it sound like they would end up making things more stressful.
