Are the pictures on Hogwarts Legacy eshop page new?

Until now, I don't think we've ever seen anything of the switch version. I don't recall there being any pictures on the eshop page. The six pictures currently there look like they could from Hogwarts Legacy on the switch. They look ok? (for screenshots)

If the trailer is real, this is the first Switch gameplay footage.

I think the biggest performace test, the most power demanding part of the game, is probably flying on a broom, which is strategically omitted from this trailer. Specifically, flying on a broom, open world, through mountains with forest trees, and really far draw distances (which we saw in demos at release for PS, Xbox link at bottom of post).

twitter post, origin of the trailer. If you watch it closely, there are frame rate stutters. https://twitter.com/geo_official/status/1712362687320166822?s=46

(@Liam_Doolan @Olliemar28 Disregard if you've seen this already. You don't need to reply. I tagged you since you two authored the four most recent Hogwarts Legacy articles.)

@WoomyNNYes You can see broom flight at the 15-second mark, it looks damn impressive. Stutters are expected with a game of this scope. The loading screens are probably going to be awful.

Yeah, thanks. I noticed that moment of broom flying after I posted, but it's still not an example of the more-power-hungry environments that exist in the game, with lots of trees & longer draw distance to render. The broom flying in the trailer has almost no trees, and a short draw distance.

@Nin10doh Frame rate appears a bit low at times in that. My skepticism remains. The continued lack of official gameplay is likely to avoid bad publicity.

I really want this game this game's performance to be playable docked, acceptable.... the waiting continues.😆

@WoomyNNYes Reminds me of how Witcher looked before they added some tweaks to get it smoother. I thought it would be a bit worse, so I'm okay with this, especially since he couldn't add the patch on which would, hopefully, provide better performance.

Seeing how that was handheld mode also, I'm pretty optimistic. Very rarely do we see games that run worse when docked.

Looks decent so far but haven't pulled the trigger yet with us so close to the actual release date. Waiting to hear from someone like Digital Foundry before purchasing.

She was like a candle in the wind... Unreliable.

SwitchUp on youtube has a "performance review". In case anyone hadn't seen it.

For those who’ve bought the game digitally, can you kindly go into Data Management and list the breakdown of the Software and Update Data file sizes?

This will give us an idea of how much of the game will be on the cartridge vs. how much of it will need to be downloaded.

For those who may have a physical copy already, is the cartridge playable at all without a download?

Unlike some other examples of cartridges with large updates required (LA Noire, for example), the game loads up fine without the update being installed. However I didn't continue playing to see if it would actually let me play or if it only lets you play a small part of the game, before prompting you to download the rest of the game (like Mortal Kombat 11). I quit and applied the update.

Interestingly the back of the box states at least 30gb is required to download, but the download is only 7.6gb as had been reported prior, so I don't know why the box says you need 30gb of space.

Wonder if we're going to see a Nintendo Life review of this?

@alasdair91 It's probably safe to say the publisher didn't give out review copies until release day or the day before release. Also, embargo still doesn't appear to have lifted.

Sometimes Nintendo Life can't get a review out until 2-5 business days after release date. And it's always due to the fact that the publisher didn't give out review copies well in advance of release date, and/or embargo. If you look on youtube, there are some reviews. Most are performance reviews. I may have seen one or two game reviews, but, I think they were by unfamiliar youtubers (as far as I saw).

So, regarding an NL review, the waiting game continues. It always annoys me that embargo date & time are never revealed. I think embargo's should be posted publicly. All the secrecy seems ridiculous & unnecessary.

The ultimate question is,

Is it better than a cloud game?

So far, I think youtube review consensus is probably yes. There are obviously caveats, but it appears developers worked very hard to make this game run as acceptable as possible. I think it runs well enough that I will buy it.

I have moved my previous XBox One X to my mother in law, where we often visit and the loading times are super annoying on that system, even though the One X is a very powerful console.

On PC and my XBox Series X, there are practically no loading times.

So I have a feeling the loading times are going to be awful on the Switch and seeing the gameplay footage so far, they had to take some serious compromises. The characters still have somewhat of detail, but the environments look absolutely awful.

After having played it on PC and XBox Series X, there is no way I can manage to play it on the Switch.
The game looks absolutely fantastic with such a great atmosphere and the severe compromises they had to do for the Switch version, just kills too much of it.
So this is a hard skip for me sadly.

So, is the paid DLC on eshop worth it or useful?

@Jeronan Some of the performance reviews on youtube site 30 & 60 second load screens to load between areas & some stores. I was expecting worse. I think I can tollerate what I saw.

It's for pretty much every door. From my experience playing on XBox One X, where the load times were between 5 and 15 second average.... you constantly hit them in Hogwarts Castle. There are a ton of doors with load screens. It was a terrible experience and stopped playing on that system, so I bought it on offer in Steam and just play it on my gaming laptop (with 3070) with no load screens, when I was there and had some time to kill.

So 30 to 60 seconds load screens is really awful for playing Hogwarts Legacy on the Switch.... on same level awful as Lego City Undercover, which had similar load screen times. But at least in that game, these long load times were indeed only between gaming world and indoor environment and did not happen too frequently. It was still awful and super annoying though.
I played Lego City Undercover again later on my XBox and the experience with much shorter load times was just so much better.

Gavin Lane posted an update. NL will not be doing a review for Hogwarts Legacy.
https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/nintendo-switch/hogwarts_...

We’re not going to be reviewing Hogwarts on NL. We’ve spoken as a team several times over the last few months and have decided not to cover this particular game with a review.

I understand that might disappoint some readers waiting to hear our verdict on what is undoubtedly a big release, but at this point it’s a known quantity from a gameplay perspective and information on the quality of the Switch port won’t be difficult to find. We’ve been averaging over a review a day since September — there’s a huge number of games launching in this period and this one is certainly not in need of our championing to find an audience!

To be 100% clear, our decision not to review shouldn’t be taken as passing judgement on other outlets or anyone who buys and plays and enjoys the game — several of us on Team NL will be doing so! However, we’re in a fortunate position where our higher-ups don’t dictate which games we shall and shall not give coverage to; in this instance, we decided that we would rather divert resources to other games at this busy time of the year. To those who wish to manage their mischief, crack on and let us know how you get on.
