hello, so i recently got the switch and i've played quite a bit of BOTW and i have noticed that sometimes when playing in handheld mode the switch heats up a lot and fps drops are noticeable is this normal?
Completely normal. The Switch isn't that much more powerful than a Wii U, 360, or PS3. BotW puts the console through its paces. It is a mobile chipset after all.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,247 games (as of April 15th, 2024)

Apparently according to Digital Foundry, the framerate is actually better in handheld mode. But regardless, the very demanding first-party games like BotW, Odyssey, and Splatoon 2 eat battery/pushes the fan like nothing else. Only Xenoblade 2 (to my knowledge) doesn't really push the fans.
Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill
I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!
Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
@EvilLucario Because Xenoblade 2 doesn't draw extra power from the system in handheld mode like the other first-party games, even though it really should. This is likely why the resolution is so unstable.
I'd kill for an update that adds the option to boost the game's performance in handheld mode.
It'd be a useful option to have. Boost mode for normal story gameplay. Power-saver mode for when I'm running side-quests, grinding affinity charts, and managing merc missions.
