Yes! I totally agree. That would have been such a nice option. I don't understand why companies don't do common sense things like that. Maybe there was too much overlap between multiplayer/singleplayer assets and files, who knows.

lmfao pour another one out for people planning on getting the Switch version

they just announced the DLC expansion for other platforms and haven't shown a damn thing despite saying development was progressing smoothly

I can't imagine this game running well on Switch. I just bought it on PC.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (SD)

@rallydefault and @Reprise,

That's bad to hear. I am still on the fence of buying Doom 2016, but I really can do without the multiplayer.

If I'll ever buy it, it will be the Retail-version (I know the download-version is 50% off on the e-shop right now, but it takes up a lot of memory. And I rather have it on a card anyway).

@Ralizah Honestly completely forgot that they were probably going to discount the game heavily during QuakeCon and now I'm lowkey regretting buying it at launch. It is a fantastic game though.

@Henmii The multiplayer in 2016 is pretty generic and derivative of other modern FPS games. The single player content more than makes up for it though. The campaign is excellent. A perfect blend of classic DOOM with a bit of Metroid Prime and modern FPS design mentality

Mentioned this earlier in the comment thread for the news article about Eternal's single player expansion (which the premise sounds amazing) but honestly the Switch version is kind of being devalued by the minute at this point.

They haven't offered screenshots, or footage of any kind, they've announced DLC for the other platforms that looks to be a beefy story expansion that further prolongs the wait on the Switch version, and they just announced next-gen versions for PS5/Series X without saying a word about Switch in general

The only people I see getting this on Switch are people who literally have no other option. The game is now coming to next-gen systems, and in addition to that people who buy the PS4/XB1 versions right now will get those versions for free, and in addition to that, the Steam version is now heavily discounted down to 20 ish dollars because of the ongoing QuakeCon sale. When the Switch version comes out, literally all the hype surrounding this game would either have died down significantly, or would be focused on the next-gen versions entirely.

@Henmii Doom 2016 is one of my favourite games from the last decade and honestly it's probably one of my favourite FPSs ever. The Switch version is also fantastic and perfectly playable. I owned the PS4 version, but also got the Switch version and ended up putting in more hours on the Switch version just because it's a more convenient platform and it's very much a pick up and play game (particularly the arcade more).

I definitely recommend it. Although it really does suck you're forced to download the multiplayer. It kinda defeats the point of them making a big deal out of the whole single player campaign being on the cartridge, since if you want any of the patches, you're going to need to accommodate about 8GB just for the multiplayer.

Well, count me against your assessment. I have a beast PC, but I'm still getting this for Switch, even if it doesn't launch until 2021. I just need the mobility or else I'll probably never get to finish it.

You're being super sensationalist and it's putting you out of touch with the myriad situations and opinions people have.

@dionysos283 No, if it was launching then I think it would've been in the September Partner Showcase. I think it'll come around March/April if it hasn't already been cancelled.

@dionysos283 id software said back in early July they'd be talking about it soon, it feels very much like they can't talk about it because they're waiting for Nintendo to announce something. At first I though it was a Direct they were waiting for but 3 Partner Showcases have passed since and no sign of it makes me think it's a hardware announcement they're waiting for.

Launch window title for the new hardware with the Year 1 Pass content on the cart is my prediction meanwhile the game runs poorly or not at all on the base Switch.

[Insert obligatory routine 'where the hell is Doom Eternal?' comment here]

Seriously, every few months it's "soon" and "we haven't forgotten the Switch version". I'm bored now. Tell us what's going on. Covid delays? Development problems? Bitten off more than they can chew? Scrapped? Give us anything.

I can't believe we went from "same day release" to "a short delay" to this...

My opinion exactly.
In the best case scenario they decided halfway through to include the DLC as free bonus for Switch players, which meant 6 month+ additional development time.

Reprise

@dionysos283 At this point, it would be borderline insulting for them not to, unless it's still coming out before the end of the year (lol fat chance). I bet any money though it comes out some time next year and it's a £45 release with no DLC included.

TheFrenchiestFry

The new single player DLC is fantastic and really carries over all the gameplay adrenaline and sense of mobility and versatility I felt when playing the main campaign.

Pity about that Switch version. If it doesn't come out by early next year it's probably cancelled

Unless Bethesda's incompetence from Fallout 76 has somehow infected this release, I can't possibly imagine this being true.

Granted, I do think they were a bit too optimistic in thinking the follow up to Doom wouldn't take a while longer to get to Switch. Like even now knowing how to do make Switch ports for ID's games, not only did Doom come out more than a year later on Switch, but it was patched several times after the fact. So even without a global pandemic screwing most businesses (especially in Id Software's home of Texas), the idea that Doom Eternal would take a while longer to come out on Switch is not remotely surprising.

also you'll all look stupid if this is example 800 of a Switch game being announced to come out like 2 months after the release date is confirmed

@graysoncharles If they weren't telling the truth then they'd be facing significantly more backlash

I think this if anything is the best indicator of why any updates on Eternal's Switch version has been nowhere to be seen. Maybe now that DOOM is effectively a Microsoft IP they'll probably help put more resources into finishing it now that they worked on Forza together

@graysoncharles

If you ask me, it's better to make a multi-billion dollar company like MS happy rather than keeping a handful of Nintendo enthusiasts happy. Finishing the Forza ports should be the priority. Bethesda and Panic Button can take all the time they like with Doom Eternal. If the Switch port hasn't been officially cancelled then it'll come...eventually.
