Topic: Do you think it would be better for Nintendo to reveal the NX before E3 or at E3?

Now that I think about it could still be revealed before E3. They did say that directs are being reformatted.

Likeliest scenario is that NX is at GDC behind closed doors. And there's no booth to save costs.

They could start to tease some stuff in January. Honestly. Just a little hint here and there. Maybe some sort of home/mobile announcement in an upcoming Direct in the new year. Perhaps some sort of capability that it may have. I don't know, really, but I do think it's possible to start trickling things in January.

But as for a full-blown reveal, like "here's-the-machine, guys" type of reveal - yea, that's gotta wait for E3.

@rallydefault: Yeah like in march announce name, if its home or mobile, and core concept. Reveal the design and games at E3. E3 2016 has to be BIG for Nintendo.

They would make such a huge impact at E3 if they waited. The fan in me wants it sooner, but who knows how soon they'll break that news. Though with the Nintendo Direct formula, who knows what kind of presence Nintendo will actually have AT the event. It would be kind of cool to actually see them on stage doing their thing again!

They've already started to build up a hype-train for it, so maybe show off the console and what it is before E3, but don't just do it in a direct, start advertising it throughout the internet. Announce the games at E3, but don't showcase games that won't be available until a year or two into the console's life...showcase the third-party support too and that it will definitely have more games than the Wii U...and don't show off gimmicks. Announce the price to keep a hype going (as long as it's $300 or less...anymore would kill it due to the PS4 and XONE going down in price quickly...PS4 is $300 everywhere I have looked). After they announce it at E3, start the advertisements on TV Commercials (not just during saturday-morning cartoons, but also parent's times) and also in magazines and gloriously on the internet. If they advertise it correctly and keep the name (I think NX is a pretty cool sounding name for a console), then they could have a success...but if they lose the support from 3rd parties, don't get the big games that the other platforms have and the games aren't as big as their former consoles (not including the Wii U in this one), then they should have a big success and be able to compete. What they need to start doing, is compete and quit trying to be the 'OTHER' company. People talk about the console wars now, and the Wii U isn't even counted to be part of it, which is a shame. Nintendo needs a console that is almost as great in performance as the PS4 and XONE, or else it will be another system that most consumers will turn their heads away from, and that's something that they don't need. It's bad enough to rush it out this quickly due to sales of the Wii U, but it's understandable...just don't make us Wii U owners mad by taking Star Fox and the new Zelda away from us.

@rallydefault: Nah, E3 is not the right place to fully reveal a console anymore. If Nintendo focused on the console at E3 rather than the launch window lineup, the NX would be buried under the big XB1 and PS4 reveals hence resulting in a situation identical to the Wii U.

@Grumblevolcano: what big Xbox and PlayStation reveals would overshadow a new Nintendo console? If they unveiled the NX in a Direct they'd only be showing it to a lot of people who wouldn't need much convincing to buy it. Then what other options are there apart from those two? I'd be shocked if they thought E3 wasn't viable, it's been used for almost every one before, what will happen next year that should make things different?

@TheLastLugia: well I mean if they're gonna show NX before E3 then there better be a lot of games at E3. E3 2016 for Nintendo is go big or go home.

@TheLastLugia: Both Microsoft and Sony changed up their console reveal strategy this gen. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 were announced in the traditional E3 setup but the successors (Xbox One, PS4) had reveals before E3 (2-3 weeks before) so E3 can be a large focus on games. If NX is releasing in 2016, even known games like FFVII remake and The Last Guardian would overshadow it if NX was revealed at E3.

@Grumblevolcano: Plus Kimishima did say starting next year directs will have a new format. And I'm positive there'll be at least 1 direct before E3.

@WebHead: Yes, I see the NX reveal being one of these new format Directs.

How I consider this situation is that Nintendo needs to perfect the balance. On the one hand, reveal the console too late (E3 onwards) and the potential console base becomes smaller due to people getting XB1 or PS4 instead (remember that Nintendo is always last with E3 presentations whether it's Digital Event or press conference). On the other hand, reveal the console too early and the Wii U fanbase won't buy NX because of how Nintendo has supported the Wii U.

@Grumblevolcano: well it could still be a handheld. And before anyone says anything it was NoA vice President Scott moffit that said 3ds is here to say, not kimishima. That's not NoA's decision to make.

Well, I mean, to each his own. But I totally disagree.

@rallydefault: well like I said if they're gonna show the system before e3 they better have a lot of game announcements at E3. I don't think Nintendo can afford a bad E3 reception.

@WebHead: Yes totally. I mean, I'm one who thinks they may reveal certain aspects of the console before E3, and then maybe just show us the box AT E3, you know? So not a total reveal only at E3, but at least the physical box itself. But I feel like, lately, that's been the same for all consoles. We know a lot about them in terms of specs and such and are just waiting to see the box at E3.

But yea, E3 is still the biggest draw for audience and coverage in terms of gaming. They'd be silly to not save the "reveal" for it. And hey, why not the best of both worlds? Show off the box AND showcase a fantastic lineup of games?

Edit: I do think it would be silly for them to reveal the actual thing through a Direct. You have a much smaller audience (theoretically only current Nintendo customers and a smattering of bored/slightly interested people who have to hunt down links or visit a major gaming website just to know it happened). Now, to TRICKLE and tease information through Directs? Perfectly fine to get the pot stirring. But to reveal the actual thing through them would be shooting yourself in the foot right out of the gate in terms of exposure.

@rallydefault: here's what I expect if they show before e3:

It's the last 10 minutes or so of the direct kimishima talks about the core concept of NX then reveals the chassis. He reveals the name and intended launch window then says" we will reveal NX launch titles and more at E3 and future Nintendo direct presentations."

My guess is that they'll release some info before E3, such as the specs of the system. Then, during E3, they reveal the design, and everything else. They can't have an E3 focused on the NX, because there's still some games coming out(Zelda U) later in the year.

@Eat_Pie: if NX is launching next year E3 will be 80% NX.

@Eat_Pie: That's where the logic of Zelda U not being Wii U exclusive comes in, a Twilight Princess situation to be more precise.

At this point, we don't know anything because they haven't told us whether it's Wii U exclusive or not. I'm just happy that it's coming to Wii U and isn't an NX exclusive. My guess is that if the NX lineup is strong enough, they won't have a need for Zelda U.

@WebHead
I could see them revealing the key information at E3, then revealing everything else through Directs, so the focus is on the games that year.
