if coming out in 2016 then a hardware and OS reveal in March near GDC, if 2017 then E3.

They could do it in January, Microsoft did for the first Xbox and Sony did for PSP and Vita.
PS1 was announced in May at CES in 1991 as part of the planned announcement with Nintendo.
PS1 as full fledged Sony console, was formally announced in October of 1991 by Sony.
PS2 was announced on March 1st of 1999, with the DVD player announcement landing on 9/9/99 to detract from the Dreamcast U.S. Launch.
PS4 had a February unveiling.
Xbox One had a March unveiling.

I have no doubt there will be a media blowout at E3 2016, with a launch to follow in time for Holiday 2016 (too much rumbling for it to be 2017).
Though I could see them doing a GDC announcement showing off the hardware, followed by GDC board banning them for doing such a huge announcement (GDC has been trying to kill major announcements at GDC for a while).
Having a short time table leading to launch does a lot better than a long time table.

As it is pretty close to being confirmed at this point, early 2016 reveal, late 2016 release.

@DefHalan: If some of the rumors and evidence hold true most major publishers/developers have at least been briefed on NX or currently have development kits. If NX launches next fall they will have had a year to develop games for the system. From what I've heard and read about over the years it would seem just one year is extremely short for the development of a game. Therefore I do believe that ports of major third party games launching fall of next year wouldn't be too much trouble. However, I would definitely fear for the quality of NXs' first party/exclusive software and would have more than enough reason to fear for the quality of ports if the console doesn't boast enough power. So, if the NX will indeed launch next fall Nintendo must unveil it to the public prior to E3. A notable event for this to happen would be at CES, the show where if I recall correctly the NES was revealed, and sub-sequentially launched later that year. If the NX is due for 2017 then I don't think Nintendo would have much reason to spill the beans until E3.

I'd prefer to see it revealed at E3 on stage to try to build up as much hype as possible at E3 as this would get everyone talking about the NX.

However, I bet they'll reveal it in a Direct or Digital Event. If they do this, I think it'll be best to reveal something about the NX before E3 to get everyone talking about it, such as the controller. Then they can flood us with information at E3.

Definitely prior to E3, otherwise the NX will silently fade away into the distance while the Microsoft and Sony conferences take all the glory.

@TromboneGamer:
Actually most 3rd party developers build their multiplatform games on PCs and then port it to consoles, fixing and tweaking what is needed.

@crimsontadpoles:
There is a very good chance NX will be drowned out at E3 by the rest of industry in order to show their support for Sony and Microsoft.
The media may not even report on the new system because of how the Wii U went.

Prior to E3. E3 should be used to showcase software, whether that be 1st party, 3rd party (multiplat or exclusive), indie, or even Virtual Console. E3 is about games, and that's what people want to see. The amount of time spent on hardware or firmware should be limited. It's better to reveal it prior to E3.

Reveal via a special Nintendo direct (Like sony and microsoft did for the PS4 and Xbone reveals respectively) early in the year, draw in hype over the hardware and feature set etc. etc. show it off at cons and events leading up to E3, show off all the games at E3. and if rumors hold true, hold more press events, market like crazy, draw hype, and release in November.

If Nintendo launches in July 2016 then they should show a graphics demo this fall. I think they will launch September 26, 2016. If launching in September then they should show something in the spring and save the full reveal for E3.

@OlicityBlows: Square Enix hasn't announced any games for the NX yet. DQ 10 and 11 were under consideration, but since they had no idea what the NX actually is, they couldn't confirm anything.

@skywake: Both the 3DS and the Wii U were revealed during E3 a year prior to their launch, 3DS during E3 in 2010, followed by its launch in 2011 and Wii U in 2011, followed by its launch in 2012.

Wii U reveal E3 2011: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKwldXyhSzU

The Wii was demoed for the first time at E3 the same year it launched. Sony & MS both launched the same year as their reveal of PSX41.

I think it would definitely be better to reveal before e3. Nintendo have an uphill battle to build hype for the thing and really develop awareness not only among gamers but consumers as a whole. A direct simply is not going to cut it, either. The audience is too small.

@NintendoFan64: well it could be at gdc behind closed doors. WE just probably won't see it till E3 which is fine. They don't want competitors stealing their ideas and Nintendo's E3 2016 has to be BIG.

In other words, at least another 6 months of wacky NX ideas debunking to go ahead.

It would be best if they don't reveal it before E3 2017 and instead release lots of Wii U games for the next two years.

@dumedum: not happening. 2016 is the last major year for 3ds and Wii U.

Any unless dine otherwise, I'd mark June 14th( first official day of e3, when Nintendo usually has their conference or digital event) on your calenders as "NX Reveal day"

Remember just because we probably won't see NX until E3, doesn't mean Nintendo won't talk about it. Remember 3DS? they could reveal the name, formfactor type, and core concept at say a april or may board meeting. Then reveal design, specs, and software at E3.

I have talked to various industry analysts and they all unanimously decided Nintendo should reveal it tomorrow. I erm...I mean the industry analysts need to know when I erm...I mean consumers need to start saving up for it.
