Hi!
Long time nintendo and sega fan who longs for playing some games again. I am a bit older and started playing on game and watch, and have pretty much owned all nintendo and sega console to date, except the Wii and Switch.
While I loved my WiiU the draught of games and doing a PhD meant that both lack of interesting games and time made me play less and less.
Having finished my PhD a year and a half ago and really wanting to play some of my favorite series again I am thinking about buying a Switch oled.
The thing is that I am reading that a new Switch is on its way. I am not interested in the newest tech, and I seldom buy the newest games, and I usually focus on one game at a time. Should I wait for the next system or do you think I will get enough enjoyment out of the current system?
I know this is a rather hard question to answer, but I would love to get some advice from those of you who owned the console for a longer while.

That said. The Switch 2 is going to be backwards compatible so my thought is buy one now along with the games you want to enjoy. Once Switch 2 comes out, you can trade the Switch in towards the purchase of the Switch 2.

that is a difficult question to answer, thanks for asking it here! i think it really depends on your wants and your budget; to offer a similar story, i've been a Switch owner since day one, abandoned it for a while, and i'm just now returning to my worn-out console to play Persona 5 without upgrading.
if you want to jump in right now and have the money, it's your choice to do so! there are some pretty good deals on Switch systems for cyber monday, and the thread @Tasuki linked offers several helpful perspectives. though i think it's important to keep in mind we are likely only a few months away from a hardware refresh with backwards compatibility that should give you a better experience as you catch up with this past generation!
If you're not ready to get the newest system don't worry, the Switch will have plenty for you. It has a very deep lineup of high quality games that could keep you busy for years. IMO it's the best lineup of games Nintendo has ever produced. There's no rush to get the next gen console if you skipped the Switch, you have a lot to catch up on.
Thanks @WaveBoy@Tasuki@Havenn for your answers.
Perhaps I should wait for a bit and see what Nintendo reveals. Really glad it will be backwards compatible because there are plenty of games I would like to play.
Recently brought out my WiiU and 3DS for the first time since 2016 and found out I owned a few games I forgot about and have yet to play (Xenoblade X, the remaster of Twilight Princess and Starfox Wii U, as well as the remaster of Majoras Mask and Picross 3D 2). Now I remember buying them but not having enough time to actually play them. In other words, I have more than enough to hold my attention for quite a while.
Really glad I saved everything at least. I could just as easily have sold it due to loss of time to pkay and interest.

@Bolt_Strike that is a good argument also. I have no rush. Perhaps the price will go down when the next system is released. I have no problem buying the next one a couple of years in. Hopefully that means the system has been upgraded like the old switch.

@LaCru79 Do you want to play docked or only handheld? If the second, you could get a comparatively cheap Switch Lite. Also, there are holiday bundles for both OLED and Lite so it's a good time to basically get one of the major games for free with the console.
There are over 10,000 games on Switch so you could buy one and play for as many years as you want before eventually upgrading.
Kinda funny the two consoles you have skipped so far are Switch and Wii — the two most popular Nintendo home consoles! Many people have only played those two.
I’d say get a Switch Lite and any games that seem interesting to you.
By the time the Switch 2 comes out, you’ll already have a little library of games, and it’ll be like a huge upgrade; but at the same time, the lite might continue being useful as the more portable option.
The way I see it, the oled model would be more or less completely replaced by the 2, while the lite might get to keep its niche for a while.
@LaCru79 If you were to get a switch now, and trade it in later for Switch 2: Currently, to perform a transfer from one console to the next, you need both consoles present. So, you'd have to buy switch 2 first, do your transfer, then trade in/sell your switch after you're done the transfer.
Switch 2 reveal and launch are still not revealed. The console reveal may be late January or February. And switch 2 launch may be April-June. Nintendo isn't always predictable, and they love secrecy. We only know it's backward compatible with switch.

Or just subscribe to basic NSO for cloudsave. There are a small number of games which don't have cloudsave (mainly Pokemon) but almost all games do. I expect that will still work to transfer to Switch 2 just like it does between multiple Switches right now.
@FishyS Yeah, I will see what the holiday bundles are and go from there. I am currently eyeing the white oled with mario. I love the look of it amd it is a game I really wan’t to play.
Regarding Wii and Switch; the Wii I was never really a fan of. There are definitely great games, and I have a few of them that I played on my Wii U, but otherwise I was a bit so so when the Wii launched. Regarding the Switch, as I wrote I started my PhD at the time so I had very little time to play games. I was also a bit done with gaming and prioritised other hobbies.

If you feel there's something you absolutely have to play, why wait? You'd get around 400 hours of gameplay out a Switch Lite before it could begin to show signs of stick drift. The benefits of waiting four to eleven months for the Switch 2 to arrive is the possibility of the current Switch library of games performing better on the new hardware and/or a wider selection of third party games because of the higher hardware performance of said hardware.
Worst case scenario, if you can live without access to Nintendo first party games, but want handheld performance above what Switch offers (and you can't wait for Switch 2), you could opt for one of the many handheld PC devices out there. Steam Deck being the pick of the litter.

@NeonPizza I quite like my lite; I use it whenever I travel because my OG Switch is a little too elderly to survive being thrown around. They sell for about $150 on sale as opposed to $300 for OLED. Once Switch 2 arrives I will probably get rid of my OG Switch but keep the lite.
I would say start buying games while they are cheap and wait for the switch 2 reveal. If it is backwards compatible as many assume you will have a library ready to go and a future proof system. And if it isn’t the switch might get a price cut with the new system.

I am still playing my current OLED and games play hasn't fallen behind nor prevented me from playing current Nintendo games. So as others said it user preferences and what games they want to play. Also we have no release or preorder dates for Switch 2 when it will come out other then that Nintendo is working Switch 2. So without a release date and current Switch games are just fine on current OLED Switches. You can always resale your OLED at used games stores and put that fund toward a Switch 2 as well so Switch isn't gone just because a Switch 2 comes out. That would benefit games with huge GPU resolutions but for a majority of Nintendo games the OLED works fine.
