Topic: Best Headset/Mic for Fortnite

My son plays Fortnite on his Switch, and we've tried about four different headsets, trying to find one where the mic works. We finally found a Playstation one, but it apparently only works when he's playing someone who is on a PS4. Any recommendations for a headset with a mic that will work on his Switch and regardless of whatever platforms his friends are using? I don't care if it's wired or wireless. Thanks.

I would look at the TurtleBeach 450 wireless headset. It has a transceiver you can plug into the dock to use with the headset. Or a wired mobile cable to plug into the Switch itself. That's the one I found when contracting Turtlebeach about using it on Fortnite. And I did post a thread about this as well so you might have to search to see what was said in it.

You want the Arctis 3 with Bluetooth 2019 model. That’s my recommendation, and here’s why.

It is the first and only headset I am aware of that has been designed specifically for the Switch, to connect to the Switch via headphone jack and connect to the phone via Bluetooth, mixing the audio. Fortnight has built-in chat but practically every other game on the system requires you to use a phone, be it the Nintendo Online App, Discord or even a phone call. There is no other way to mix audio without using a special splitter device and cables running out of it in three different directions... it’s a mess. This headsets solves that problem. Just plug it into the headphone jack on Switch, which works regardless of docked or handheld (unlike many headsets that rely on the USB port). Push the Bluetooth button and it connects to your phone right there on the spot (provided your BT is turned on and you’ve connected at least once before). Crystal clear, beautiful connection... fantastic headset.

It is also fully compatible with the other consoles and PC.

@JaxonH that's a poor choice BT isn't reliable enough for on demand. If that's what you have to offer then a wired headset like TurtleBeach 450 with Mobile cable works better. BT isn't prime time for Switch demands. And so is the TurtleBeach is also compatible with PC other consoles that depends on how they use the connections. I rather just wired plug into the Switch and now have to worry about BT issues.

I've had no issues... none whatsoever, and the OP said nothing of any "on demand" or "prime time" or whatever you speak of.

Not everyone needs a super competitive "must be wired" headset (which this is wired, it's only bluetooth for the phone chat audio- nobody wants to run cables into a phone, that's inconvenient and it prevents phones from sitting on most wireless charge pads, and prevents traditional charging full stop). If you want to promote the "super primo absolute best connection, too good for bluetooth" thats fine, but know your audience. And it isn't the random guy who just wants a headset to use for his kid. I'm ok with promoting the merits but, let's keep the advantages in perspective here

I've used this headset for 50 hours + with my bro and it's as good as one can reasonably expect. The bluetooth is for audio only anyways, so unless you're trying to Stream on Twitch (as perhaps you refer), it's the headset to use. Most people care about convenience, especially when the bluetooth is plenty reliable enough for the average person. It's used in cars all the time for phone calls for a reason, used for your phone to play music to a speaker, etc. I can appreciate the enthusiast's recommendation with the whole "better than BT", but honestly it needs to stay only recommended to other enthusiasts or those with a specific need such as perhaps streaming or an insistence on 7.1 over 5.1.

The best thing we can do is put the facts on the table and let people choose for themselves. Let them choose between running extra cables into their phone every time they play a Switch game online if they believe bluetooth so bad, or simply connecting to any phone wirelessly regardless of what kind of port it has and being able to keep your phone on the charger or wireless charge pad. Let them decide. I'm sure some will agree with you. I think most will opt for convenience provided it works well enough (and my personal experience can attest, it definitely works well enough). But ultimately I'm just relaying information. Each person must decide what's best for them.

@JaxonH thinking of ordering the Arctis 3 bluetooth. Just wanted to clarify a couple of things to make sure I understood your post. Is it correct that bluetooth is NOT needed to use Fortnite's chat feature? You are saying the headphone jack connection is sufficient for both game audio and the microphone? (I am talking about Fortnite only). Also, the only inconvenience I see, when playing docked, is that a I would need a super long extension cable for the headphone jack correct, if I seat far from the console? (since all game audio is through the headphone jack on the console?)

Correct and correct.

Though extensions are super cheap and easy to use. I keep mine coiled up by the headset.

@JaxonH thanks. I am up and playing. it's all good. mic works great. For whatever reason the mic doesn't work when using the extension I bought below. It's a 4-pole connection which I thought it's all I needed. Maybe it's too long? I got the 20-ft version. If you have a working (including the mic) extension, can you recommend it?

Mine is so old idk what it is.

But I do know you need to update the headset via connecting to PC.

Go to website, download the software, set up an account on their site while you're there, and log in to software. Then you can update. Helped with mic not working in a certain situation, the specifics of which I cannot recall. There are also two different adapters that come in the box and one of them cause issues with the mic for me. The one that worked well for me was the one that has a headphone jack on the end.
