Topic: Battery depletes while turned off!

Just checked my Switch. Went to bed yesterday after playing a bit Zelda and turned off the console With 86% battery remaining.
Now over 16 hours later after work coming home and turn on the Switch with still 86% battery remaining.

To turn the console completely off, you have to hold the Power button for several Seconds until a popup screen shows and then go to Power Settings and then Turn Off.
That is the only way to completely turn off the console.

so i just got home from a client and took a fully charged 100% switch off the dock, powered it off and removed the joy con's now i am going to let it sit on the couch for a couple hours and i want to see where the battery is with the joy con's removed.

Almost 2hrs since my last post and with the joy cons disconnected and the switch turned off the battery is still at 100%. The joy cons have to be using the charge even while "turned off"

Well, I guess the major "issue" was leaving the joycons connected, then!
I'll still make some more experiments, though!

Final update. Switch has been off dock since 1030am it is now 323est and the switch still has 100%. Note to self do not leave the joy cons connected off the dock if I'm not playing.

And that's good!
I guess I need to charge my joycons now since I left them off the console for something like two days with a lot of use. I don't remember exactly how long they last, though.

Update. My switch had a battery fault. The battery percentage would jump all over the place.
When turning power off at 100% and joy cons detached it still would use power.
I could only play zelda for 1 hour and 34 minutes!! My friends are clocking 3 hours handheld mode zelda.
So i took my switch back to the retailer and got a replacement, i am now able to run zelda for 3 hours!!
Im gutted though, cos had to start zelda from beginning, cos u cant transfer saves. Dammmnn u nintendo!!

Same issue!!! Charged the switch to 100%, turned it off, not sleep, off!, turned it on the next day and the battery level was at 90%. I played zelda for about an hour, went down to 66%, once I turned it back on 30mins later, it was back up to 77%. I contacted nintendo about it, since it's been happening since I got it, and they told me that it is definitely a battery issue or hardware, I was told to send it in for repair..... if they can't fix it they'll send me a new unit, which means there went the saved data.

I called Nintendo support as well. Worked with the person over the phone for 30 min and they want me to send it in for repair as well. They told me it will take up to 3 weeks to finish the repair and it's definitely a battery issue. The fact that I can't back up my saved data is just silly. I love Nintendo but i just don't get it... it's 2017... can't back up saved data really??? I'm feeling quite frustrated that I spent over $400 on everything and they are taking it away for 3 weeks and telling me that all they can't do anything about my saved data... ughhh. I guess this is what I get for being an early adopter.

@tuxor01 I know!!!! That's the first thing I asked about, I can't believe they have no way of transferring data if it needs to be replaced... hopefully they can fix the units instead. I rather lose what I've done then get stuck with a lemon lol. They told me that would take about a week for the technician to fix it, let's hope that's the case.

Hi everyone, I have a question for you all.
This morning I tried a little experiment: i charged my Switch over night till it reached 100%, than I turned it off (not sleep mode, OFF OFF), came back after 30 minutes, turned it on and the battery was at 90%.
Well, I'm not a battery expert and I really, really never learned even to charge my phone properly, but that is not good.
Am I doing something wrong?
Besides, my WiiU Gamepad did the same thing: I fully charged it and then didn't use it for a couple of days and, when I turned it on, it was blinking red. After no use at all.

Do I really suck that much at using batteries or there's something wrong with my units?
Because everything else seems to work fine!

Thanks for any answers!

mine does the exact same thing if i dont disconect the joycons for some reason they will suck down power even when the system itself is off i believe its some kind of trickly charge for the joycons. i still get about 4 hours on zelda though in handheld, and my percentages dont jump around.

That is the 1 reason, why i didnt send my switch in for repair (3 weeks reapir!!!!)

No thank you!

Straight to the retailer to get a replacement (not messing around, i spent alot of money on the switch and theres a fault so its on there end to replace it for me and give me a new one)

I think theres a bad batch of nintendo switches that have gone on sale, from wat i have seen on the internet forums alot of people are having the same issue.

My advice is to just go straighr back to the retailer/shop and get a replacement!

Well, that's sad.
I thought it was a tiny problem, not smoething on that scale...
Mine keeps doing this, so I wonder if I should take it to the retailer myself: still, I only have Zelda so I don't have more games on which to make some more and precise tests...

Well, just when things were turning for the best...
For 4-5 days everything went perfect: no power loss, great gameplay durations and times, everything was fine.
UNTIL...
I played a bit of Blaster Master this morning, left my Switch OFF with no joycons attached at 92%.
Came back home. 47%.
That's a stunning drop.

And believe me, everything went fine for days and it was off.
This machine is strange.

This has happened to me too. I put my console on the dock and let it charge over night. Just yesterday I took it off the dock and saw the battery was at 100% (I actually tapped it to see the percentage). I then turned it completely off by hitting the power button > Power Options > Turn Off and I put it in my case and went to work. At around noon is my lunch hour so I took my Switch out of the case and powered it on to see a notable drop on my battery bar, it hadn't been used at all or even on but the battery was down to 84%. That's a HUGE loss for being completely powered down. Now I live in Canada and we're in the middle of a bloody-cold winter right now but not even my 3DS' lose that much power just from walking a little out in the cold but that's the only thing I could think that might be affecting the battery even in a completely turned-off state. Any thoughts?

You don't know the power of the Barrel Roll!

Sorry if this has already been answered, but any reason why you guys aren't just putting it back in the dock when you're done playing for longish spans of time? Are you in a different location or something?

Alessandro_P

@rallydefault Well, When I play for long spans I do put it on the dock! But this morning I played for 20 minutes and it was at 92%, I don't know it charging an already charged battery can make it weaker over time. I know that it kinda does for phones or tablets and such.
Also, I want to test the console: if I have to go on a trip by train in the morning, for example, and I want to play while I come back in the evening, I want it to be working, not losing 50% of its power just for being still!

That's why I'm making all this experiments... I'm becoming slowly more aware of the fact that my Switch probably has a fault battery and that I'll need to take it back to the store and maybe wait for a while, but I'm still testing it.
If the situation becomes impossible to handle, I'll give it back.

I just want to understand the problem a bit more, and I'm grateful for all the answers and experiences you all are posting here!

P.S.: Just for fun, I turned on now. 44% after 2 hours. And it was 42% before. Well...

@DarthFoxMcCloud Well, welcome aboard, apparently it's a problem a lot of us are having right now and we are trying to find a solution!

No, I don't mean while you're playing it, I mean after you're finished playing it. Like, if I play in handheld mode for an hour or two before bed, I'll put it back in the dock instead of just leaving it out on my nightstand or something.
