Are we every going to get a Brand New Mario Kart game that is Actually Made for the Nintendo Switch instead of just the Wii U Port? The Wii U Mario Kart 8 was fun back on the Wii U and the port was a ok game back when the Switch first released but Nintendo really needs to make a new MK game actually made for the switch. Getting tired of playing a MK 8 game from 7 years ago on the switch.

Agreed, we need more new first party games, it wouldn’t surprise me if Nintendo releases Mario Kart 9 next year.

For Switch, don't think so. A future Nintendo system, perhaps.

Nintendo stated that May 2020 was barely halfway through the Switch's lifespan, that means the successor is likely coming around March 2023. Hence a launch window title for the Switch's successor would benefit Nintendo more than releasing a new one for Switch in 2021/2022.

The reason I say perhaps rather than definite for a future Nintendo system is Mario Kart 8 is pretty much Nintendo's GTAV and what happened to GTA after GTAV's launch. Well GTAV launched in 2013 for PS3/360, got ported to PS4/XB1 in 2014, got ported to PC in 2015 and is getting ported to PS5/Series X|S in 2021 meanwhile GTAVI doesn't exist. This being because of just how big a success GTAV is. So I could see Nintendo pulling the same trick with MK8 and having "Mario Kart 8 Definitive Edition" release for the Switch's successor.

We have one - you just need a huge house to play it, and multiple overpriced kits if you want to play multiplayer with friends.

I think the ship has sailed on a Switch specific Mario Kart. 8 Deluxe basically iterated and improved what is widely considered the best installment in the series. If a new MK for Switch was planned at any point, it probably would've been a year 2 title for the console like Smash was.

Mario Kart 8 was fantastic and had the much needed battle mode on Switch. Why do we really need a new one?

@mowerdude I mean, you might not like it, and a lot of people can't afford it, but isn't Live Circuit what you're asking for? A Mario kart game built from the ground up for the switch hardware? It just has the AR gimmick added... And real world space requirements... And a physical car.

EDIT: shoulda read the whole thread. Right on @tendo64

Mario kart 9 cross generation game which runs on switch at 720p 60fps or 1080p 60fps on switch 2.

I mean most of the people playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe didn't have a Wii U, so probably not. Especially since they keep making spinoff games.

I think it'll happen. Nintendo doesn't religiously follow patterns or business conventions in their decision making, they're the kings of left field so I wouldn't rule anything out. If they have a fun idea, and they think it'll sell well, they'll go for it. Simple as that. And I find it very hard to believe they don't have some idea of what to do with Mario Kart on the Switch.

If they're really worried about cannibalizing 8 Deluxe, maybe instead of a direct sequel they could create a second branch of the series (something that's different, but not quite a spinoff, think like what the sandbox Marios or Metroid Prime are to their respective IPs). An open world Mario Kart racing game, let's call it Mario Kart World for simplicity, would fit this bill pretty well. There's been multiple requests for a successor to Diddy Kong Racing and other racing games such as Forza Horizons and The Crew have already attempted something similar, so this could satisfy that demand. If the gameplay is more focused on exploration and driving across open areas instead of set courses, that would differentiate itself enough to justify being on the market alongside 8 Deluxe, and the next gen console could similarly have a proper Mario Kart 9 and a Mario Kart World 2.

And no, Home Circuit doesn't really count as a second branch before you even bring that game up, a second branch would be a main series, $60 AAA game with a ton of depth and content that could attract a broad audience of both casual and hardcore gamers. Home Circuit is a simplistic toys to life gimmick primarily targeted at kids and casuals, and an expensive one at that. It's a blue ocean experiment that probably isn't going to get a sequel, it's not something you'd expect to exist alongside the main series for years to come. The Switch needs a new, AAA Mario Kart experience of some sorts and neither 8 Deluxe nor Tour nor Home Circuit hit the spot.

This is what I would hope for.... at least an open world version. Looking at all the new characters, outfits and karts for MK Tour almost makes me feel cheated that the Switch doesn’t have its own proper MK. If they are expecting to have almost three more years, I think they will need some system sellers and MK is the most obvious choice at this point. Plus, I would think that the bulk of Mk switch audience is a bit burned out on it, with most probably having it for two years, if not longer in the case of those who owned it on the WiiU.

You know technically the switch doesn't even have it's own zelda yet. Link's awakening is a remake and BOTW is a Wii U game. The next mario kart is gonna have to do something pretty special to separate itself from the last one and avoid feeling stale.

They could make a "Nintendo Kart" with all their ILP's, similar to Sega All-Star Racing. That could be amazing!

I think Nintendo counts Live Circuit as that. Just because gamers may ignore that doesn’t really mean anything. I could see them doing a cross-system game at the end of the Switch lifespan for the sucessor/BC. So we may get 3 mario kart games on Switch, but we totally already have 2. With live circuit being the made for switch entry.

I'd think that Live Circuit is to Mario Kart what Amiibo Festival is to Animal Crossing.

OK, it's a lot more fun than that by all accounts, but don't think that Nintendo wouldn't let a generation pass on a major platform without a mainstream entry in one of their key franchises because they put out a gimmicky spinoff in its place. They've already done it, and that's not the only example.

Mario kart 9 I think will come out on Switch 2, probably along with Pikmin 4 (if it still exists)

Mario Kart with features like on Modnation Racers (build your track, customize your racer and your vehicles) + music customization like Little Big Planet will be a totally awesome Mario Kart game.

@Matt_Barber The difference between that scenario and now is that Nintendo was supporting two consoles back then and the 3DS got Happy Home Designer when Amiibo Festival came out. The Switch is the only console they're supporting, and there's no other recent Mario Kart game alongside Home Circuit.

@Ryu_Niiyama No, that does mean something. For the general audience to see Home Circuit as a main series game and for it to sell well, it has to have a broad appeal. Even casuals will look at Home Circuit and see that it's mainly a toy and not a serious game, the limitations of having a toys to life game are incredibly obvious. Home Circuit is a spinoff, not a 2nd Switch game.

@LzWinky Forgot to respond to this comment. We need a new one to show what the Switch can do with the series. 8 Deluxe is just a showcase that the Switch can play Wii U games, it doesn't show what the Switch can do that the Wii U can't. Taking advantage of the increased power/versatility of the Switch can push Mario Kart to new heights and deliver an even better experience than 8 Deluxe. Having things like larger tracks/worlds to drive around in or using the Joy Cons to create a unique new mechanic would accomplish that. And Home Circuit doesn't satisfy this either since it's more a showcase of what the toys can do than what the Switch itself can do.

I think we will. I think the "Switch 1" has at least 3 more good years in it, and we're going to get a Switch Pro this year to help with that extended life (though if you look at it, 3 more years would only put it at 7ish years which is fairly normal for a console).

Everyone seems to get amnesia when we talk about Nintendo developing games. Why does everyone keep thinking we actually know what Nintendo's working on? We generally don't know a lot of the stuff they're working on until they're good and ready to tell us. Just speaking of recent titles, Origami King came out of nowhere, Age of Calamity came out of nowhere (bit different, yes), even smaller stuff like Mario 35 would qualify as something nobody saw coming. I would not be shocked if Nintendo announced MK9 at some point in 2021, even if we don't see it until 2022.
